Ive had a nasty cough in the windpipe area for 4weeks , made worse by Asthma . It seemed to be easing a great deal and then it got much much worse after my night in an isolation area in hospital with dd1 were the filtration system seemed to set me off and I had to use my reliever inhaler,(I very rarley have had to use it) . That was Tues night and Im now in a lot of pain when coughing and my chest is very very tight. My whole body aches and Im very very fatigued, had to spend the whole day on the sofa yesterday with really strong paracetomol. Poor dd1 needs my looking after and I cant be there in the same way as I should.

Im wondering wether a trip to out of hours GP is needed???

Sounds like it. I've had pneumonia twice and the first time i left it far too long and had to be admited for 2wks - not what you want before xmas.

Won't if it is a chest infection. Makes you feel really tired as well and i had back pain which i thought was a fluey ache but was my infected lung.

loopylou6 · 08/12/2007 10:16

sounds very much like an inflamed windpipe, i suffer with this every time i get a cold, very painful when u cough or sneeze, think its called tracitus (sp?)

Out of hours gp nurse has told me to go to A&E , theyre not happy with my rapid heart rate and painful chest even at rest.

poor little dd1 is sobbing , shes worried I wont come back later. Poor kids had a right rough week needs her mummy to give her meds and sooth her.

And she also needs a mummy who is well - take care of yourself.

Finally back from hospital , didnt wait too long to be seen, even though the screen said 3hrs. They did my obs and my peak flow which was 270 (V low for me) and then hooked me up to an ECG for some reason , I was very anxious. My heart rate was a concern and they also mentioned that I may have an air pocket in my lungs.

That all came back negative so the GP suggested I may have pleurisy , I gather thats a virus of the lungs and there isnt much they can do , except rest ,relaxation (to lower heart rate), paracetamol and stay warm.

Lets see how I can do that with a recovering dd1, a man flu dh and a bolshy dd2 !!!!

Any ideas most welcome !

melsy, i am just getting over pleurisy (2 weeks!).

it was hard to stay calm, especially at night what with cough cough coughing. if you are NOT pregnant, then take nurofen as anti inflammatories help reduce the pleural inflammation. do what it says in the links above, especially holding the ache.

and for some reason, I found 'sleeping' upright helped loads (never slept more than 3 hours at a go), plus keeping bedroom window open was a huge help. my gp also has me on antibiotics to combat any oppourtunistic infections, and this has helped with my gunky sinuses.

it truly is only the bed rest that has helped me in the end. i'm having just 2 days of it, with people rallying round to help out. just being able to nap at will has helped.

merryberry · 08/12/2007 15:16

ooh, forgot to say, ask for a couple of days worth of codeine prescription for pain relief (i couldn't have it as am in last trimester pregnancy). i think when you stop the paina bit, you get into a virtuous circle of less hectic coughing -> less pleural inflammation -> less hectic coughing.

GOOD LUCK

melsy · 08/12/2007 17:48

merryberry do you know what caused it? As Ive been readng its normally a symptom of something else? Ive not been given anything to take , just been told to take paracetmol.

Its strange as Ive been holding my chest for a few days now and it says on your link to hold the chest whilst coughing.

I do have an appt with my gp however on MOn , as I have a regular check due to anxiety problems. I can ask him then about what to do/take.

Coughing is very painful and its making me do this sort of choking/ retching thing , its very strange. Is that the mucus ?

Ive had problems with codeine , so prefer to avoid it if possible.

It was like a last comment the doctor, (I said GP by accident before), that checked me over made as we were getting ready to go from A&E. He said possibly , dont really know what to make of it really. Pnuemonia hasnt been mentioned at all, so it concerns me he would say pleurisy as I dont know what would have caused it.

OP posts:
merryberry · 08/12/2007 19:08

pleurisy is normally subsequent to a viral infection (eg the common cold). have a look at that link below for more info. it's certainly what i had, my son's wee cold just settled on my chest and bingo, here i am.

i too have had the coughing retching. it's been a combination of the sinus infection draining and just irritated throat from cough cough coughing all the damn time.

merryberry · 08/12/2007 19:10

they should now give you anti-bs tho'. if you're suffering for so long you are more prone to have other infections.

melsy · 08/12/2007 19:35

ah ok , phew , just caused by a virus.

Well discuss it on Mon with gp , as he knows Ive had this for about 3-4 weeks now.

The doctor in A&E said that its possible I dont even have asthma and that its just whats going on with my chest right now. Its hard to say that to the gp that diagnosed it though.

Thats strange isnt jasjas , you wouldve thought it would get worse.

Ive been bringing up my food not long after eating it , is this normal with pluerisy???? Its really worrying. Certain foods are irritating and then I cough and bring up. Im feeling a tiny bit better , but not much , that may be due to being in bed all day yesterday.

I have a pre booked appt with the gp later , so hopefully he'll be able to help.

I feel so sorry for myself ,dh is going back to work tommorow and Im then alone with both girls. It looks like dd1 who had surgery last week now has a chesty cough which is not helping her recovery.

Melsy - have also had the same flu virus/cough for 3 wks - so you have my sympathy. Tis horrid. I also thought I was better after a week or so and then it got alot worse once I'd manned a stall at dd's Christmas fete for 6 hours ...

Doesn't sound as bad as yours as don't have tightness in chest (don't have asthma) but have that coughing/retching thing really badly. Also feel wiped out. Feel marginally better after eating, not worse though.

Hope you get some good treatment and feel better soon. Let us know!!

merryberry · 10/12/2007 14:25

I've certainly thrown up from coughing. Also have bloodshot eyes. Had a good antenatal appt today, as a bonus had my chest listened too. They can hear the pleura rubbing when i breathe deeply. Bed rest this weekend helped ENORMOUSLY. Much of the good already undone this am by having to get up and go out and do the childcare. Oh well. Am looking into getting some mroe help now.
