I will preface this with...IT'S NOT COVID.

Also this is a massive "woe is me" whinge and no I don't expect a diagnosis.

I'm honestly at the end of my tether now. In fact I was a few days ago so I'm now just at the crying point.

Whole family have been ill with some kind of respiratory shit. Smallest in hospital for a night but now recovering well. I first started getting ill around 12 days ago but kept going into work and working (we had too many people off with covid). When I began to feel REALLY ill until I was roundly sent home. Have been off since. Everyone else is getting better but feel like absolute shit still.

I have yet to go to a doctor. What's the point! Ive yet to go to a doctor who has been remotely interested in a chest infection or a cough, even pre covid.

Symptoms are:

  • A cough so dire it makes me wet myself and wretch. I can't sleep. Even sitting up doesn't help.
  • The cough means my throat is red and sore.
  • I've got a banging bloody headache.
  • Cough goes between a wet cough to a horrible dry one.
  • today I can't talk as it triggers coughing. I can feel my chest is sore and tight. However I'm not wheezing so I assume the doctor won't give a shit. I've had years of doctors dismissing me because my chest sounds clear Confused

The cough and the hideous symptoms have been in full force since about Wednesday and honestly don't feel like I'm getting better.

I will phone the doctors tomorrow but only because I'm so exhausted and ill I think I will need a doctors note for work soon.

However, as I say, it seems pointless as no doctor has ever seemed concerned.

I don't know what I want. Is this just a bad cold going round? Anyone else suffering?

I've got tonnes of support with kids so I'm actually getting plenty of rest now. However allowing myself to get stressed and overworked in the run up to this probably hasn't helped.

DH and DS2 have had this - DS2 now better after a week, DH has been ill for nearly 3 weeks now, it's just lingering on and on, especially the cough and the ears. DS1 and I have had nary a sniffle!!

Many negative LFTs and PCRs so definitely not covid. The weird thing is that covid is going round DH's school, but all the teens testing positive and sent home for 10 days are not symptomatic - whereas DH coughing and spluttering is repeatedly testing negative!

CornedBeef451 · 03/10/2021 14:52

I'm sorry you're feeling so shit, it sounds awful.

No advice but one thing I've found useful with a sore throat/ tickle cough is a throat numbing spray. I used one recently when I had Covid and it gave me some relief so I could get a bit of sleep.

I used one called Ultra Chloraseptic from Amazon. Hope you feel better soon!

smoshbambi · 03/10/2021 14:55

I had this for nearly 3 weeks. I’ve had covid, but this was so much worse. No help from the doctors. Nothing I did helped the constant coughing. I was off work for 3 weeks.

smoshbambi · 03/10/2021 14:55

I had a thermos with hot water and honey by my bed every night.

cultkid · 03/10/2021 14:59

Take codeine

cultkid · 03/10/2021 15:00

It will suppress your cough

daisyjgrey · 03/10/2021 15:01

I had pneumonia a couple of years ago which sounded like this. Plus a temp. Took weeks to get through it and about 6 months to properly recover.

Newoneagain20 · 03/10/2021 15:01

Another family here with it ! We did another PCR tests recently all negative.
Daughter 18 ended up on antibiotics as they’ve said it’s tonsillitis. Has a lovely cough which is making the sore throat worse!l (this is her 4th course of antibiotics ever in her life!! She isn’t really a sickly person)

Daughter 12 - the cough is her worse symptom, started of with a sore throat now sniffles and cough - it’s bad and sounds bad. I worry as when she was younger winter bugs always went to her chest and she was a numerous antibiotics for chest infections!

Me now on week 2 sore throat returned & feel worse! Ear ache, head ache sleepy!! bored will feeling pants.

Mad to think both my kids are very rarely ill other than nursery times both pretty much have 100% attendance for school so it’s odd to see them both so poorly :(

fluoropostit · 03/10/2021 15:02

All the same here too! So rubbish.

ViceLikeBlip · 03/10/2021 15:09

Same here. Whole family has some hideous cold- runny nose, fever, shivering, and a cough where the little ones are often puking until they're sick, and my lungs feel like their on fire. All of us have done pcr tests, all negative (plus about a hundred million negative lfd tests as well!)

My gran swears by hot honey and lemon with a big slug of whisky or brandy, and that actually does help (helps me sleep anyway)

Lemonlemon88 · 03/10/2021 15:15

I had this, it was bloody awful. I didnt get better until they gave me a preventer inhaler and steroids, i also ended up with a sinus infection as had a blocked nose with it so on antibiotics as well. Im still using a preventer inhaler.

Summerfun54321 · 03/10/2021 15:17

It could be another kind of coronavirus. Not the novel covid 19 or a strain of it but just a different one with the classic coronavirus symptoms. Get a pulse oximeter if you don’t have one, for reassurance. Then just standard cold and flue treatments.

BigButtons · 03/10/2021 15:18

I’ve had this. 4 weeks on I am finally feeling much better. It still hasn’t gone completely though. I still have the cough and loads of mucus.
I too wondered if it would ever go away- it is but very very slowly.

MartyHart · 03/10/2021 15:21

Cough medicine with codeine for the cough. Only for a few days though.

shazshaz · 03/10/2021 15:22

There is a virus called Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) which mainly affects children under 2, but can infect adults of any age. It can cause bronchitis and pneumonia. I'll let you google but it sounds very similar to what you're going through.

CompletelyFuckedOff · 03/10/2021 16:19

Ahhh yes they said RSV or Bronchiolitis for my baby!
I've just ordered a covid test. I need to rule it out again. Knowing my luck I had a low immune system because of work, then caught my children's cold and now have covid. Or something else completely ridiculous.

Honestly I just cried after a coughing fit. My lungs hurt so much as so does my face. Definitely something sinus like going on now too. Yay. And crying makes it worse.

Please research the benefits of pine needle tea.

ZoBo123 · 03/10/2021 16:39

Sounds like RSV. Have you tried day nurse and night nurse they are the only thing that has helped me in the past with heavy colds even if they help you sleep

insancerre · 03/10/2021 16:47

Dh and I both have this at the moment, so you have my sympathies
Bronchostop worked for me

AliceMcK · 03/10/2021 17:07

Do you have any general health issues? Have you ever been tested for autoimmune?

I’m going through exactly the same at the moment, every symptom you have described plus both eyes infected and soo painful. The rest of the family have been ill too but no where near as bad but that is normal in our house as I have autoimmune problems so it always hits me harder and takes a lot longer for me to recover.

I also have sleep apnea and use a cpap machine, at first I wasn’t using it because I was really uncomfortable but I started it again 2 days ago as I read it had huge benefits fighting covid in early stages of hospitalisation. At the time I was waiting on pcr results so I thought why not and it’s definitely helped with my coughing and sleeping. I also used my DH inhaler to help open my lungs. My results are negative too.

We have a small tank of oxygen I bought off Amazon, I got it at the beginning of the pandemic. You could try something like this to see if it helps your breathing…. It only has about an hour’s oxygen in it but you never know, it may help.

Also for me, all dosage rules go out the window, if I feel I need meds I take them, my rule is as long as I’m not taking more than twice the daily recommended dosage I’m ok with that. My DCs I’m a little stricter with but I will still give them slightly more than the daily dose if need be. Rehydration salts also help keep your fluids up and stuff your knickers with lots of toilet roll!

Good luck x

CompletelyFuckedOff · 03/10/2021 18:51

Funnily enough DH has autoimmune problems and yet he has been less affected than me! I'm just a normal woman, healthy enough and no underlying issues.

Please ignore everything @AliceMcK has said. This is quite frankly terrible, dangerous advice.

ScarlettDarling · 04/10/2021 21:40

@CompletelyFuckedOff

To be honest had it not been for a million negative LTFs and negative PCRs I would be convinced it was covid. Apparently not though! I'm going to phone then tomorrow but I hold little hope. I think I'm starting to worry I've got pneumonia or something. I obviously don't or I would be wheezing away!
Just wanted to say when I had double pneumonia a couple of years ago, I wasn’t wheezy. I was breathless but mostly just felt horrific with a raging temp. You could well have a chest infection or even pneumonia and need antibiotics to clear it up. I think you need to speak to your gp ASAP.
CompletelyFuckedOff · 04/10/2021 21:42

Right, I've got amoxicillin to take and have been signed off. I actually feel a bit brighter after only one day of antibiotics! Cough has calmed down too. Just very tired and dizzy.

PCR test all done and posted back. I have covered all bases and will now just await my fate!

I'm sure it's not covid though.

Great way to die a horrible death from paracetamol toxicity.
