Little bumps or cysts on head of baby. What and why?

KangaMummy · 11/11/2004 01:17

One of my friends had a baby boy in July 2004 so he is sort of 4 months old now.

He has little bumps or lumps or cysts under the skin on his head.

The first one was at the back and has started to get a bit bigger. This was there at/or soon after BIRTH

They are hard like a pea.

They will move about a little bit under the skin.

GP says he doesn't know what they are but "probably nothing"

Baby has no hair just like his 2 year old sister.
My friend is very worried esp as few more have started to appear.

Baby is thriving and putting on loads weight, smiling laughing etc.

Does anyone have any experience of simular or same things with DS or DD?

Has anyone seen anything like it at all please?

I'm not sure what they could be but if I were your friend I'd ask to see a paediatrician to be on the safe side.
Hope you get some advice from other mums who may have experienced this.

KangaMummy · 11/11/2004 12:41

she has asked to be refered but GP doesn't want to BUT no idea why

She is very worried

Baby is not worried by them, ie he doesn't mind them being touched.

Has she spoken to her HV about them? The GP is wrong IMO. What about asking if there are any nurses/docs online?

KangaMummy · 11/11/2004 13:17

I don't know if she has asked HV but the practice HV is pretty hopeless from what I have heard

Thanks for tips and about doctors and nurses

i have racked my brains about this, but not sure what it could be, especially without having a good look. i would advise your friend to make an appointment with a different gp for a second opinion. it may only be harmless fluid-filled cysts but if your friend is worried then she needs more of an explanation / reassuance. hth.

KangaMummy · 11/11/2004 16:29

It is very difficult as he is senior partner in practice.

Could she get to an NHS walk-in clinic, km?

KangaMummy · 11/11/2004 16:45

I don't know perhaps that may work

thanks WWB

I would walk in and insist on a pead referral ..

I am sure it is nothing .. they do sound like cysts

but if she's worried I'd make a fuss

How dare a GP say he doesn't know what it is but refuse a referral to someone who may

Twiglett · 11/11/2004 16:48

also a private consultant appointment would probably cost around £75 .. would she consider that?

shouldn't have to though

DillyDally · 11/11/2004 16:50

Also I would heavily stress the fact that they are growing..and ask why he doesnt want to refer. see what NHS direct have to say too.

KangaMummy · 11/11/2004 16:50

She is really angry about that too

She is worried esp as more started to appear and the first one started to grow

How do you get a private appoitment? Twiglett

I will get her to phone NHS Direct too thanks dillydally

Ask around and find the name of a Paediatric Dermatologist (don't know where you're based)

Find out where / whether they do private clinics and phone up and speak to the secretary

I would assume

Twiglett · 11/11/2004 16:56

I say £75 cos that's what DH's rheumatologist charges per hour (he's a leader in the field) .. but I suppose it could be more if there's tests involved

KangaMummy · 11/11/2004 16:57

she lives on north west london/herts/middx borders

thanks twiglett

how about this consultant?

acnebride · 11/11/2004 17:00

could try searching here for a consultant

sorry, went and got this link before twiglett posted but still may come in useful

Twiglett · 11/11/2004 17:01

british association of dermatologists

did you know there are only about 300 consultant dermatologists in the UK .. there are 800 in paris alone?

treacletart · 11/11/2004 17:05

Sounds very similar to the cyst my ds was born with over his right eye - its just above his brow bone like a small flat pea - its noticeable but only if you have it pointed out. He's having it removed in January at the same time as some more (completely unrelated) routine surgey to rectify a mild hypospadias. Our consultant told us it was a particular sort of cyst (sorry unhelpfully I cant remember the term) often found on the head. He said it was almost certainly benign but aswell to remove it to check it out and also because if left it could get quite large and could be unsightly when he gets older. Hope I haven't paniced you, but I'm sure your friend should get a specialist's opinion. My GP only suggested this on my second visit to him about it.
