When to see a doctor about a skin lesion?

Talktalkchat · 18/09/2021 15:55

I’m sure I’ve had a red bump on my skin for a while but it’s grown and got a bit scaly.

I’ve tried to pick it of and it just bleeds. It’s uneven and growing.

Do I make an appointment with my GP and ask them to have a look? I’ve used one of those apps which wasn’t too help.

Anyone know how much dermatologists cost on Manchester?

Yes, make a GP appointment and they’ll take a look. If they think there’s something wrong they’ll refer you to the dermatologists at the hospital.

Immaculatemisconception · 18/09/2021 16:04

I saw my GP with a lesion. They took a photo and sent it to the hospital. A consultant viewed it and I was given a two week appointment to have it removed. It was nothing in the end.

Always see your GP if you have a lesion you feel uneasy about. You don't need to pay to go privately.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 18/09/2021 16:08

Definitely go to GP. I had a lesion I was worried about and was referred to a dermatologist. It's a basal cell carcinoma which they have frozen, brilliant service

Talktalkchat · 18/09/2021 16:14

Yes I think it’s a Basal cell carcinomas as well.

Did they remove it?

The dermatologist said it could be cut out or 'frozen' using some kind of acid. I chose the freezing. The best thing was she was very reassuring that it wasn't dangerous or would spread. Also recommended wearing SPF factor 50 every day of the year which I'm doing. I'm sure you'll be OK, insist on a referral though

Thanks. It’s got all the classic signs and because it’s not scabbing over I thunk that’s a concern, and it’s growing.

Will hopefully get a referral.

I've just had one cut out that looked very similar, and mine was a basal cell carcinoma. Please go and see a GP or at least send a photo to them

Yes I think it’s the same thing.

Will try and make an appointment with the GP…. just they require me to call them.

I would make an appointment ASAP. Could be nothing, but my DF had something similar and just left it and left it but eventually went to GP.
It was a BCC and he ended up needing a skin graft as he had left it so long.
Fingers crossed it's all ok for you 🤞🏼

LeanneBrownsLonelyBraincell · 19/09/2021 21:08

I had a raised area that was scaly, it was acnetic keratosis and harmless if unsightly. My GP froze it off straight away.

I googled that as well. I think BCC is more likely.

I got brushed off by my doctors several times with what turned out to be a pretty severe BCC. I ended up going private in the end.

Was it big? There for a long time? What made it serious?

Never wait, if you are worried, insist on it being looked at.

Querty123456 · 20/09/2021 06:46

I guess it was there about 6 months - just looked like a tiny spot that wouldn’t heal. It would crust over then bleed but wouldn’t get better. It turned out to be an infiltrative one, so was much bigger under the skin. What was difficult was the location, it was on my nose so no spare skin to cover the wound which led to quite a large surgical procedure and bad scarring.

Oh yes the face is difficult :( I have a new mark on my face as well, side of nose, it’s skin colour but flat/raised as I can feel it. Not sure if that’s cause for concern either.

Thanks everyone.

Getting a call back today from the GP. Hopefully get a same week appointment and referral to dermatologist.

I had one removed 3 months ago after Google-diagnosing myself (our NHS GPs are hopeless and my private one was on hols). Went private and had it removed within days. It was a BCC. approx 1cm across, perfect circle, raised round the edges and scaly on top. It was on the back of my neck so I had a surprisingly large section of my neck cut and stitched together which was not fun as I couldn't turn my head for a week or two but I'm very glad I got it sorted.

How long had it been there?

Mine has been here about 6 years which makes me think it’s ok.

OP posts:

Mine appeared about 6 weeks before it was removed.

I have one that is very similar OP… I’ve had it for 10 years! Every so often I panic and get it checked and they poke it and say ‘it’s only surface deep so it’s probably fine’.
