Hi, I have been left with a sentile pile/ skin tag on my anus after a fissure I had years ago. I want it go so badly it’s causing me a lot of distress. I can feel it a lot and I have problems with hygiene. It has also stopped me getting intimate with anyone. I can’t take it anymore it’s ruining me. I have visited private clinics who try to charge me £1000 I can’t afford this. Is there no way at all my my gp can remove this. I know they usually don’t because it’s cosmetic. But I can’t cope anymore I came home and sobbed because I feel like there’s no hope. Has anyone else suffered with this. Please help

I didn’t even really get the chance to talk to her properly if I’m completely honest. She just took me straight in and looked at it and was like “oh that’s definitely a pile, take some laxatives and anti itch cream” and rushed me out. Wasnt very happy with the experience if I’m honest.

That's not good.. but is there a chance she could be right? Though 'Anti itch cream' sounds very unprofessional! And usually a G.P would advise dietary changes, ie more fibre etc for piles, unless you specifically mentioned being constipated? I would go back, see another G. P and be clear about the issues you've mentioned on here.

GoodnightGrandma · 28/09/2021 17:36

The GP should be able to tell the difference between a pile and a skin tag.

MyGrassIsBrowner · 28/09/2021 17:45

I understand your distress OP. I too have a couple of skin tags around my anus (one on my perenium from birth) and one from giving birth. Although unsightly, my DP never even spotted them, I actually ended up pointing them out to him and he said.. oh, so what? If a man is bothered by them then he's not the right man for you mark my words 😉
How big is it? If it's as a big as raisin size or bigger, then please dont be listening to the PP's saying to remove it yourself. It will most likely need surgical removal. If it's bothering you that much see if you can be referred to another GP. Good luck hun. X

BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 28/09/2021 17:48

Did you explain?

Belleangel22 · 28/09/2021 18:31

Going to try see another GP somewhere. Just not fully satisfied yet. Surely if it was a pile I wouldn’t have had it so long? I don’t really get constipated and it’s been permanently stuck to my bum everyday for years now lol! I’ve even tried piles cream but that doesn’t work! It is fairly small but bothers me either way. Don’t worry I would never try to remove it myself either!:)

Can I ask why it’s stopped you getting intimate with anyone? Unless you’re engaging in some very specific acts, I really don’t think anyone would notice. I’m not dismissing the discomfort but just wondering if you might have built up a bit of over anxiety about it

Belleangel22 · 28/09/2021 19:02

I know I probably have and it something I shouldn’t be embarrassed by, I just personally rather it wouldn’t be there as it makes me self conscious

I had one removed on the nhs 3- 4 years ago. It was under general anaesthetic as the area is too tender for local apparently. Mine wasn't a pile but a skin tag that bled every time I used the loo.
It took me a full week to recover from the anaesthesia, i was disorientated and absent. I think it's my age.

Definitely get another opinion OP. I had to persuade to be referred but couldn't cope with the constant bleeding.

I’ve had one pile since my first child 25 years ago. It doesn’t usually bother me. And I find that no matter how well I wipe, I sometimes am a bit dirty later on when I go again.
blablablafoghorn · 28/09/2021 20:17

Hi I did mine with a "tag band" the smallest one available. It worked well and I was similar to
You and it stresses me out but lots of people have had success with them google it.

thereisonlyoneofme · 29/09/2021 11:28

I hve one of these, it is like an external pile. I read up about removal and most people say it is extremely painful. Im learning to live with mine !

Belleangel22 · 06/10/2021 13:59

Just to update everyone, finally plucked up the courage to book an appointment with a colorectal surgeon on Monday evening so I will let yous know how it goes. Apparently he’s very nice, only awkward thing is I’ll be due on my period lol hope it isn’t awkward with my tampon hanging out 😂

OP posts:
Belleangel22 · 11/10/2021 19:33

so was just there, he confirmed it was a tag woooo! bad news is he only seems to want to remove it under general anaesteethic rather than local which i dont really want. when i asked was there really no way it could be locally removed he seemed unsure and wanted to discuss it with another surgeon. im really hoping it can be done locally as it saves alot of fuss and stress on my body and it will be alot cheaper. he is getting back to me in a week so fingers crossed it goes in my favour! PS anyone who has had this done was yours done locally or generally and what price did it cost generally?

OP posts:
EmmalineC · 11/10/2021 19:44

Have you opted for a private procedure? The surgeon should have given you a rough idea of the cost.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 11/10/2021 19:48

General anaesthetic, why?

Spyro1234 · 11/10/2021 20:20

For hygiene I recommend moist toilet tissue packets. I have excess skin there after piles from labour

Belleangel22 · 11/10/2021 21:02

I’m not sure why it has to be general, I personally don’t see why it can’t be local. He’s getting back to me in a week or so with prices. I personally don’t think I’ll go through with it if he’s only willing to do general and i might look for somewhere who can do local. Reallt has annoyed me

OP posts:
MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 11/10/2021 23:31

Is there any reason you won't go back to the GP?

NotMyCat · 12/10/2021 00:52

Honestly I would just take the GA. I have them for abscess drainage and it's a day surgery and you're under for like 40 mins if that so it's not a big deal
Especially with how much of an issue it's been. If you're nervous ask for a pre med (I do, and to load me up with anti sickness)

Belleangel22 · 12/10/2021 10:59

Hi , not going to go back to the gp as I don’t think they will do anything about it, I know I now I have confirmation from a specialist that it is definitely a tag but I reckon they would just refer me to a colorectal surgeon on the nhs which would be a mighty long wait id assume. I will wait to hear back from him on what he thinks and some prices and make my mind up from there. Hopefully if it isn’t too expensive I will just go through the GA as like user “Notmycat” has said it doesn’t seem to be that bad and it’s fairly quick which is more what I wanted. Just wanted to be in and out of the office ASAP and not all this waiting around faff for something so minor. But fingers crossed

Noapplejustcrumble · 12/10/2021 11:17

I’ve had this and had it removed under general anaesthetic. The surgeon removes it but doesn’t do stitches, it has to heal by itself, so takes quite a few weeks to heal. Really worth it though. Please don’t remove it yourself as some on here are suggesting, as can cause a lot of problems on the anus if you do that.

Belleangel22 · 12/10/2021 11:41

Don’t worry would never remove myself! How was the GA for you? Where you in and out quickly? And how where you for the rest of the day? Just don’t really want to be there all day and feel groggy for something so small

OP posts:
Noapplejustcrumble · 12/10/2021 19:08

I was a day inpatient, but you will feel groggy afterwards and will need someone to take you home afterwards and stay with you overnight. So it really does take up a few days, not something you can just get done and then carry on normally straight after.

TrollsAreSaddos · 13/10/2021 11:38

I’ve pushed to have surgery done as a local rather than GA and much preferred it. I don’t understand why GA is needed sometimes but I’m not a doctor so I’m sure they know better.

I had a GA when I got sterilized and I was only out for a very very short time and instantly felt perfectly ok when I came around.
