KangaMummy · 09/11/2004 20:07

DS is 9 years old

We got a phone call this afternoon to say that he had FAINTED in the classroom

As he fell he hit his mouth

On the floor he had a CONVULSION.

He has had a headache for last 2 days.

Took him to A & E the nurse noted that his PULSE was LOW at 54/56

BP was 100/60 {I THINK} but they said was normal

Tested his blood sugar and that was normal

I do not know anything about EPILEPSY does anyone PLEASE?

Does anyone know what else it could be please?

Has anyone have this happen to their DS/DD?

TIA

My sister had exactly the same experience. She was the same age and had a seizure at school completely out of the blue. She did have epilepsy but learnt to recognise the signs (we did too)so she could tell an adult or make sure she was in a 'safe' place.

She had various tests which could not find a reason for the fits and we were told that in many cases where children develop epilepsy for no apparent reason they just outgrow it and it remains a mystery. This is what happened to my sister and she had her last seizure in her teens. (now 36)

KangaMummy · 11/11/2004 09:51

Thanks pixel

That is very interesting,

I think my deep down gut feeling is that he does have epilepsy

He really did not want to go to school today we were a bit later than usual so his friend L had already gone round

I just couldn't persuade him to get in the car

He kept saying "this is not a good idea" I felt awful sending him

He said "I've got a headache" but I felt I had to send him it was terrible.

I told him if he had a headache he would NOT be able to go on the computer as I was convinced that as he said it as he was going into the school gate that it was a delay tactic.

I tried to explain that the other children would not laugh at him, which I really hope they don't

I am so pleased that he didn't wet or poo himself as that would have made it much worse.

I am telephoning his GP just after 10am to ask him if he can refer him to DR Nick Cavanagh I really hope so

my ds younger but has had febrile convulsions - could this be what yours had? He went to hospital eahc time and they checked him out and said some children less able to cope with the fever which can arise from any common virus and therefore would be prone to convulsions. Not necessarily any more likely to have epilepsy.
HTH.

KangaMummy · 11/11/2004 10:26

Thanks guys

Teachers took DS temp and it was normal

just come off the phone from GP and he says that the PCT say he has to refer DS to local hospital first

I feel awful as he now is saying that some of it is not classic epilepsy because

he didn't loose control ie wee/poo,
it should have lasted longer
he should have gone blue {we were told he went a very strange colour we just guessed that was grey}

I really am confused now,

He did say that if local hospital wouldn't do anything then he would try to refer him. I guess DS health is controlled by MONEY

He is going to refer him to local hospital ONLY because we now have more details than we gave at A & E.

How long do you think is a reasonable amount of time to wait for consultant appointment at local hospital?

Kanga your gp is wrong, in as much as having a seizure does not automatically mean you will wee or poo, though it is likely. That has only happened to me once. Last time I had a major seizure was only last weekend, and i did not lose control of my bladder or my bowels, and you don't necessarily go blue either. It depends how long you are out for. I agree he was out for a short time, but again that doesn't mean much in itself. There are so many different types of seizure, they can last for seconds to minutes, or go from one to another fit without recovery, which is called status epilepticus, and needs medical intervention, but not v common. But your gp is not a specialist, so will go by typical convulsive reactions, which is why he is referring you to the hospital.

I would give it about 4 weeks, and if you haven't had an appointment through by then, call up and hassle them. Realistically I think you are probably looking at the new year to be seen though, but you may be lucky.

Try not to worry, in all possibility your son will have had a one off fit because he was under the weather, and it may not happen again, but even if it does, there is plenty of help nowadays, and he will be able to do most things he wants to.

KangaMummy · 11/11/2004 11:30

Thanks LOU I thought that {about symtoms} from what you had told me yesterday, but didn't have the guts to contradict him.

I really wanted DH to ring him but he is teaching all morning and you can only talk between 10am and 10.30am.

Our GP is a lovely man but when he gets an idea into his head it is very difficult to shift it.

DS has an appointment with Consultant Paed at local hospital for his Dyspraxia/hypermobility etc at the beginning of January anyway so if nothing happens before then we can talk to him.

LOU BTW I meant that I was sad in my first message because of DS reaction this morning

I am just worried about his ability to cope with this

I am glad I persuaded him to go to school

I am really nervous {sitting here alone} as to what the other childrens behaviour will be towards him

I told him that the other children will be kind to him I just hope they are.

I just keep thinking about it.

I feel like I want to phone up but know that I can't

Smile
KangaMummy · 11/11/2004 21:37

He came out smiling and chattingwith best friend L.

I am so glad that we took your advice and sent him to school, thanks.

The other children were bombarding him with questions

What did the dr say? Did you go to hospital?
Is it going to happen again?

I think he didn't like all those questions BUT I explained to him that they were just interested, he was embarressed though.

They kept asking him

Are you OK?

Which he thought was kind of them?

I am so glad he went today, although this morning {and until I saw him coming into the playground with L} I was a bit of an emotional basket case.

Hi kangamummy, I just wanted to let you know that although my sister had epilepsy she still had plenty of friends at school and did everything the other kids did. She had her own pony, rode her bike, swam etc and never came to any harm. Obviously there were restrictions such as not disappearing off on her own (or locking the bathroom door for that matter!)but they weren't that hard to live with.

Glad your ds had a good day.

Chandra · 12/11/2004 02:23

Kangamummy, one of my friends has epilepsy and we witnessed a severe convulsion once when we were about 14 yrs old, if anything it made us more protective of her.

KangaMummy · 12/11/2004 09:39

Thanks for your support,

DS went to school much happier today thank goodness

May I suggest you contact "Epilepsy Action" if you need and help or information on epilepsy. Their helpline has been very useful to my family over the years. Their number is 0808-800-5050 and they are extremely nice and very patient. I have contacted them a few times and spent quite a long time on the phone. Very helpful and knowledgeable. They also have some local branches for parents and/or people who have epilepsy and local Accredited Volunteers who can help on a one to one basis.
Their website is very useful as well. It is www.epilepsy.org.uk.
As others have said on this thread, try not to worry too much. We have 3 members of our extended family who have epilepsy and all of them have their seizures controlled by modern anti-convulsant drugs. All drugs have side effects but these newer drugs have less and less these days. Do phone the help line. It is where I got all my help when I felt alone and needed help fast.

KangaMummy · 12/11/2004 23:24

Thanks flowergirl have looked at site looks very interesting.

Will phone them next week.

Housefrau thanks

Thought I would give an update

We had consultant appointment for DS this morning to discuss his Dyspraxia/Hypermobility

We had checked last week with GP about the letter after this episode last NOV, he had sent it but not heard anything. So when we arrived said to reception about the letter and asked if it would be another appointment or today. Anyway after alot of confusion she found the letter.

When we went into see AC {consultant} we told him all about therapy etc that he had for legs etc etc...

Then we asked about last NOV

DS has NOT had anything like it again

AC examined him and said that they wouldn't do anything for just one occurance as once in 9 years was not regular enough for them to find anything.

He did ask if he had grown alot recently which he has rather alot.

So the next plan is ED psych and then a diff consultant and then a wait for SALT.

Just thought I would update DS story, so as he hasn't had anything else simular hopefully it was a once off event.

lou33 · 10/01/2005 19:39

blimey kanga are you reading my mind? I was just coming on to ask for an update!

so pleased for you and ds

Blossomhill · 10/01/2005 20:04
