KangaMummy · 09/11/2004 20:07

DS is 9 years old

We got a phone call this afternoon to say that he had FAINTED in the classroom

As he fell he hit his mouth

On the floor he had a CONVULSION.

He has had a headache for last 2 days.

Took him to A & E the nurse noted that his PULSE was LOW at 54/56

BP was 100/60 {I THINK} but they said was normal

Tested his blood sugar and that was normal

I do not know anything about EPILEPSY does anyone PLEASE?

Does anyone know what else it could be please?

Has anyone have this happen to their DS/DD?

TIA

Kanga - you asked about stress or headaches before a seizure. I have had temporal lobe epilepsy since I was 7. I do get a bit headachy before a turn, I get a kind of premonition - hard to put into words, but am generally out of sorts beforehand. If it is any comfort, I only had one large seizure, which was at the time my epilepsy started, and only have mild episodes now. If it is epilepsy, Lou's advice is fabulous. It is manageable these days, and does not have to be a huge problem. I hope he is ok. xx

He didn't go to school today,

He was very wobbly this morning and couldn't come down the stairs{which are quite steep} very easily.

He didn't eat very much breakfast.

by midmorning he was ok again

the headache had stopped last night so hopefully that will be his aura it will certainly make it easier if that is the case.

As I am rather worried of not having any warning IYSWIM

I am so pleased that the children were taught about it

They were frightened and because of his chin and lip bleeding all over the floor made it even worse.

I think probably we will send him tomorrow it is a different teacher tomorrow but it is a very small school {27 in his class/one class per year}

Maybe suggest he doesn't do PE tomorrow as I think it is running/cross country which because of his dyspraxia he hates anyway.

Is temporal lobe on left hand side at the front?

That is where his headache was.

OP posts:
lou33 · 10/11/2004 21:57

It's possible he had a headache before as a type of aura, and a headache after as a result of the seizure. You can also feel quite drained afterwards for a day or so, but he should be ok tomorrow. I'd let him off the cross country though. Any excuse to get out that horror!

lou33 · 10/11/2004 21:58

I wouldn't necessarily say that the area where his headcahe was, would be the area of the brain causing the seizure kanga.

lou33 · 10/11/2004 22:01

temporal lobe is part of the cerebrum, at the side of the brain, sort of above the ear.

miam · 10/11/2004 22:06

lou - meant every word

temporal lobe is part of the brain that involves memory (I think - cant quite remember )

KangaMummy · 10/11/2004 22:16

thank you lou you have helped me and DH understand it so much.

I do feel alot happier now as I feel that I know a bit more about what happened and that it is OK to have epilepsy

I myself was frightened

I am thinking atm that if I think he has it and then it turns out he hasn't then OK

BUT if I just say "OH it is just a one off probably won't happen again" then I will be shocked.

So if I mentally allow for the possibility of maybe having another one then I may be more ready BUT it may never happen. IYSWIM

If he was a friend of yours DS would you say to her that it is likely to be sooner rather than later ie if he hasn't had another one in 6 months unlikely to have one.

ie At the beginning do they happen more regularly and closer together?

Is there an epilepsy helpline or club?

Have a look here Kanga

It's really impossible to say if he will have fits in quick succesion and develop epilepsy, or if he will have a few fits over the years and develop it that way. Epilepsy is such a varying condition. Sorry, that isn't v helpful. I would think that a neuro would assume that if he hadnt had any more after a year, then it would be a one off.

KangaMummy · 10/11/2004 22:46

thanks for the website DS will find it interesting too esp anout Ben's story.

I tried to explain what it was.

I am feeling like I should have pushed to see a neurologist at GOSH rather than pead at local hospital so I am feeling rather guilty about that.

You have been a brill mumsnetter friend, thanks

I would really recommend dr nick cavanagh at the chelsea and westminster. He has seen my dd1, and now my ds2, and he is lovely, and a good doc. Never makes you feel like you have asked anything silly, great bloke.

KangaMummy · 10/11/2004 23:23

where is he/she based?

I would travel anywhere for a good doctor.

lou33 · 10/11/2004 23:25

It is craniofacial unit isn't it?

did you get referal from GP?

OP posts:
lou33 · 10/11/2004 23:57

no its a massive hospital
there is an underground car park attached to the hospital tho it can get quite full, so you may have to queue.

yes i did get a referral from the gp.

KangaMummy · 11/11/2004 00:05

You don't have to answer this but

did DD and DS have epilepsy?

If so how many siezures did they have before they could be referred?

I am sorry if I am being rude to ask but you don't have to answer if you don't want to.

lou33 · 11/11/2004 00:12

dd1 was born with hydrocephalus, and she did have a couple of fits when she was a baby, but none after the original few. It's going back a bit now though as she is 12.5, and she was only about 1. Just eyes rolling in head for a bit type fits.

ds2 has cerebral palsy so he is periodically checked by dr cavanagh. There was a query as to wheteher he too had a couple of fits once, in about the space of a week, again, when he was a baby, maybe a year old or so, but he had none since.

lou33 · 11/11/2004 00:15

have to get to bed now, but i'll check in tomorrow to see if you are ok

KangaMummy · 11/11/2004 00:35
