Anyone had success with hypnotherapy?

Wondering if anyone could share their experience of having issues helped by hypnotism/hypnotherapy? If so how many sessions did it take? I've always thought it a bit woo, but seriously considering giving it a try. I tried EFT a few years back (tapping) and it did nothing for me. Thankfully the person doing it said I didn't have to pay as it didn't work. Not sure hypnotherapists would do this. .. have looked up a local one and fees are a bit steep so would like to know if it does work for some?

What do you want it for? I had it to help overcome a dentist phobia - it helped me to relax enough to get through the door of the dentist but I needed CBT to go ahead with treatment. Friends have used it to stop smoking and seen amazing results in one session.

hangonamo · 01/09/2021 09:31

There is some scientific research now to back up hypnotherapy.
I haven't had any in person sessions but used an app once which really helped my fear of flying - I was very sceptical but it worked.

SwimmingUnderwater · 01/09/2021 09:34

What do you need it for? I trained as a hypnotherapist. It is brilliant if the therapist knows what they are doing! There are some Hypnotherapists who have done a weekend course and think they’re qualified. So be careful the one you choose is good.

WhoWants2Know · 01/09/2021 09:34

I did it to help me relax while driving. It took a while to kick in, but it did help. Apparently some people are more susceptible to hypnosis than others.

adoreyou · 01/09/2021 09:43

I've used hypnotherapy for a few things the main one was to help with the stress of infertility and get me though IVF.
It did really help. I was so relaxed by the time it came round to doing the IVF and our first round was really successful with 6 viable embryos.... the drs words were we were the one in a million.
So it's something I recommend to a lot of people.

I’ve used it to get rid of reoccurring nightmares, one session worked a treat and that was over 25 years ago and they’ve never come back. I would use Hypnotherapy again

It's to address anxiety about noise, I want to be able to to not let it bother me.

@Orgasmagorical thanks for the link, will have a look

It'll be good to hear what you think, ginghamstarfish (good name BTW Smile). I found it really quite interesting.

magicstar1 · 01/09/2021 10:50

I had it for two different things. First was a phobia which had haunted me for years...that worked very well. Second was a fear of my bike after an accident...that worked too.

Winterjoy · 01/09/2021 10:57

Following with interest - I've been thinking about booking some sessions to help with anxiety around public speaking. I can easily deal with every aspect of my job except this - if I have to present to a group I just fall apart Blush

IsThisTheEndo · 01/09/2021 11:33

Also following this. I've been thinking about whether hypnotherapy might work in terms of general fitness and eating more healthily? If anyone has experiences to share in that area?

LoveMySituation · 01/09/2021 11:47

Following. I feel drawn to it somehow. I have many issuesGrin but the root of all of them is anxiety /fear. So would I be right in thinking that if that was dealt with, things would just melt away without having to sort them one by one? I've also read about hypnoanalysis, or the pure version of it. I've only read it in one place, does it actually exist?! It seems too good to be true 'the single most effective form of therapy in the world today'(quote)

ginghamstarfish · 01/09/2021 12:04

I just have the feeling that I am not susceptible to this kind of thing. Have tried many meditation/mindfulness apps etc over the years, can never manage to get into it, as if my mind just won't accept the suggestions. Would love to give it a try, but reluctant in case it's a waste of money.

@ginghamstarfish In Psychology A Level, we were always told that everyone can be hypnotised. This was twenty or so years ago, so things may have changed

LoveMySituation · 01/09/2021 13:42

But we were also told that you remain always in control throughout, so if you didn't want to accept something, then it wouldn't work

ginghamstarfish · 01/09/2021 13:52

@Orgasmagorical watched the link, interesting but I fear I would be like the woman who was not really into it, rather than the two men who had great outcomes. I have emailed that hypnotherapist though!

I found this a great help

ginghamstarfish · 01/09/2021 15:26

@JaneJeffer, thanks, just had a look at that, but again my brain just thinks about how he's slowing the words down, waiting for the next word and seeing how much slower it can get .... I'm so annoyed with myself that I can't get into this stuff. I will try again with headphones if I can ever find a quiet place to do it.

I've been thinking about it to help with my fussy eating!

Which one? I thought Kathleen Long was a bit blamey and aggressive (although I did miss a few minutes so may have missed an important point). I think I'd have been the same in the woman's shoes, you need to be able to trust your therapist, I don't think she did.

PyjamaFan · 01/09/2021 19:45

Hypnotherapy really helped me.

I carefully researched whi h hypnotherapist to use, and chose a lady who was on the Hypnotherapy register and had other counselling qualifications as well. I also chose her because she looked smart and professional rather than some of the others who looked very new age.

I went in believing it would help me, which I accept may be part of the reason it did. I had 10 weekly sessions and made huge progress with my particular issue. I also found the whole process very interesting.

ginghamstarfish · 02/09/2021 10:42

Glad to hear that some of you have been helped by this.
Re the documentary, yes I agree that the woman with the pain issue seemed sceptical from the start, and that no doubt plays a part in whether it works or not.

Have found lots of online stuff mostly paid for but at prices which would make it worth a try, but mostly aimed at specific issues such as fear of flying, weight loss, procrastination etc.Nothing suitable for my particular issue.
@JaneJeffer, I tried that one again at bedtime, with headphones, and found it better. Will do it again tonight, thanks!
I contacted Ali Campbell, the therapist from the BBC doc, cost is £1250 up front .... rather more than I expected. Found a local one who is qualified, registered etc so am plucking up courage to make an appointment.

Bloody hell, I'd be expecting him to clean my windows and cut my grass too at that price Shock

I hope you get on well with your local one and see some results Smile
