Has anyone become ill from Whitstable oysters this weekend?

I’m absolutely in agony and can’t keep anything down at all.
Only thing I can put it down to is the oysters.

I know there have been issues a few weeks ago but PHE tested and gave the all clear so they could go on sale again

Anyone had any issues this weekend?

My friends were at the festival, ate loads of oysters and none of them have been ill. Sorry you’ve been sick, horrible. Feel better soon

Florin · 01/09/2021 06:46

Oh no it’s awful isn’t it. We have had this twice with oysters and have decided to avoid them now as it is a risk of eating them. Hope you feel better soon.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 01/09/2021 06:49

is it similar to mussels where you can develop a sudden allergy?

I cannot say I have ever eaten an oyster, but I do like mussels, I am wary though.

FreeBritnee · 01/09/2021 06:57

The only time I recall getting really ill was with oysters in a Loch Fyne restaurant. That was 10 years ago. Never again.

Mussels are eaten cooked, oysters are not. So if they’re not perfectly fresh you can very quickly get ill, ill, ill 🤢
SquirrelFan · 01/09/2021 07:10

Yoicks, we were there this weekend and ate plenty of oysters. From wheelers and crab and winkle. No illness here (I guess we'd know by now). Hope you feel better!

32inchtv · 01/09/2021 07:11

These were so fresh. Didn’t smell bad, looked a perfect colour and not at all slimy in the slightest.

Its been bad every two hours through the night like clockwork.
No idea what else it could be

When did you eat them? When did your symptoms start?

ToastT · 01/09/2021 07:16

sounds like norovirus from the oysters, have you reported?

reprehensibleme · 01/09/2021 07:16

Oysters can carry norovirus - I think the figure is a 1 in 10 chance of contracting norovirus with each oyster you eat. They can be perfectly fresh but still make you sick.

Oyster roulette!

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 01/09/2021 07:19

@FreeBritneeyes I know about raw oysters, I was querying the allergy thing.

It was norovirus/oysters that did for old Heston iirc.

MaryGubbins · 01/09/2021 07:22

I love oysters but gave up on them a few years ago because of this. Not worth the risk after a couple of rough episodes.

At them on Monday lunchtime. Symptoms started 6pm yesterday

I didn’t know it was such a high chance of catching norovirus with them

How likely is it that my breastfed baby is going to catch this off me?

OP posts:
32inchtv · 01/09/2021 07:28

So far both kids fine

Giggorata · 01/09/2021 07:31

I was always taught that you don't eat oysters unless there is a R in the month. In other words, eat them in season.
They are spawning during the summer months, which affects flavour, plus the increase in various kinds of algae and micro organisms may carry an increase in toxins.

Allwillbefine · 01/09/2021 07:34

Sounds like you caught norovirus from them. There’s a high risk of catching it from eating oyesters (well, higher odds than I am ever prepared to risk anyway) and Noro has around a 36 hour incubation period which it sounds like you’ve had. You’ll know for sure if someone else in your household starts throwing up 24-48 hours after being exposed to you.

Allwillbefine · 01/09/2021 07:35

PS I remember a few friends breastfed babies not catching norovirus from them which I assumed was because they were breastfeeding so the baby may be ok.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 01/09/2021 07:37

Some people are affected worse from toxins in the oysters. The higher your iron level, the worse you get.

Carrierpigeon · 01/09/2021 07:42

I had noro when breastfeeding. My baby was absolutely fine. Unbelievable, because of being in such close contact. Get well soon Flowers

Polpette · 01/09/2021 07:46

Were you eating Whitstable native oysters? Southern Water have been dumping tonnes of raw sewage into the sea at Whitstable. Even though the oysters go through stringent tests I would still avoid them.

otherstuffteam · 01/09/2021 07:50

Southern Water did WHAT now??!! How much money do we pay then to clean out water? Was this recently? That’s terrible!

I hope they get a massive fuck off fine.

OP I hope you feel better soon and the DC don’t catch it.

They did get a huge fine - biggest fine ever given. But it was still cheaper to pay the fine then stop dumping the waste.

I was reading that last night. Which was why I thought there’d be loads catching illness from eating them this weekend if that’s still affecting them

It’s really put me off

They get a fine, customers pay it in their bills. Ridiculous.
