Help to soothe a sore bottom?

loubieloo4 · 13/08/2021 22:18

Dh (40) has stage four bowel cancer.

He's on a new chemo (the last option really) from this he is having a lot of toilet trouble. He has not quite diarrhoea not fully liquid but still needs to close to a toilet. This has given him a very sore anus, and as he's been going so often and has to strain a fair amount he thinks he has a pile.

This is on top of all the other side effects from chemo 😞

Any remedies you could recommend for both the soreness and the pile? He's to stubborn and embarrassed to ask his oncology team, if I was allowed in on Tuesday when he has chemo I would have a word with one of the nurses, but I'm still not allowed in with him 😡

Thank you

If you can't call his nurses maybe something simple like Vaseline, with a bit pushed in by finger? So sorry, such a tough thing to be dealing with.

purplesequins · 13/08/2021 22:24

maternity cool packs?
bepanthen or metanium for rough skin?

I hope he (and you) can get some relief.

FadedRed · 13/08/2021 22:25

Germaloids ointment.

Dontsayyouloveme · 13/08/2021 22:25

Sudocrem

Artdecolover · 13/08/2021 22:27

Sudocrem?
Padded old fashioned Sanitary towels (maternity ones might be best) kept in the freezer and put in his pants?
Have you posted on the cancer support thread?
They might have more ideas?...

Artdecolover · 13/08/2021 22:27

Also could he use something like anusol?

WhenZoomWasJustAnIceLolly · 13/08/2021 22:29

Sudocrem.

Rectogesic if the pile is really painful but that would need a prescription. Ice packs for after childbirth and an inflatable donut cushion to sit on?

Knittedfairies · 13/08/2021 22:29

Maybe a pharmacist could advise you? I hope he gets some relief soon.

coodawoodashooda · 13/08/2021 22:29

Im so sorry. Can you phone the doctors?

Elouera · 13/08/2021 22:31

I'm sorry to hear this. Does he have a Mcmillan nurse you could call? Or a nurse specialist at the hospital he'd allow you to speak to?

You could ask a pharmacist for a haemorrhoid cream or gel that contains lignocaine or benzocaine which are local anaesthetics to numb the area. I wonder if a baby nappy rash cream might help also, although wouldn't be as strong as an adult cream.

Look up squatty potty. When seated on a western toilet, the bowel goes into an S shape, making it more difficult to pass a motion. Squatting down, straightens the bowel and makes it 100x easier. A happy medium is to lift the feet up whilst sitting on a western, seated toilet.

Squatty potty is a brand, but there are other brands and anything to lift the feet into a similar position will help. A small step or stool on either side, bricks or even very large cans. You can also buy fold up versions which you can hide if you have guests.

A wet wipe toilet paper might be more gentle that regular, dry paper

The above were life savers when I pregnant and dreadfully constipated for the 1st time in my life.

Whoopsmahoot · 13/08/2021 23:10

Metanium cream and bum wipes -Aldi are good as are kids wipes in tesco

Bagelsandbrie · 13/08/2021 23:35

Germaloids is the best thing I’ve tried (lots of bowel issues from chemotherapy for lupus). It’s very soothing and contains quite an effective anaesthetic.

Holothane · 14/08/2021 00:02

Yellow nappy cream it’s a godsend for dry painful skin,(I can’t remember it’s name but recommend on mm) the only thing that cleared up years of hell, due to leaks and scratching circle.

Rizzoli123 · 14/08/2021 00:35

Bless. I used zinc and castor oil cream from boots. Hope this works. Sending big hugs

Lovemydaxie · 14/08/2021 17:48

Sudocrem and keep it in the fridge

Harpydragon · 14/08/2021 21:42

You can get portable travel bidets that may help to wash after he has been to the loo so all he has to do is dab dry rather than wipe. You can get them for about £25 from Amazon, if he uses warm not hot water he might find that really helps.

Also use anusol or germaloids to help the area.

dudsville · 14/08/2021 21:51

I was also going to suggest a bidet. You can install a hose fairly cheaply. I bought 30 cheap cotton wash cloths to use to dry myself. After years of a sore bottom I've now got healthy happy skin.

I also second the squating position.

Good luck, poor guy must be suffering.

GoodnightGrandma · 14/08/2021 21:57

Get a haemorrhoid cream, and put it on every time he pops. Try and get it inside a bit too.

mswales · 14/08/2021 22:00

There are special ice packs you can get for the anal area. Also make sure he is always wiping with wet wipes (you can get special ones for piles and soreness). And yes then the piles cream that has local anaesthetic in it.

GiantCheeseMonster · 14/08/2021 22:02

When wiping, squirt a bit of KY jelly on the paper first. It basically turns it into a wet wipe that you can still flush. Only a tiny bit as you obviously don’t want the paper to disintegrate but it will help to stop his bum getting sore the way dry paper can make it.

mswales · 14/08/2021 22:04

You can also get bidet seats to put on your existing loo which are quite reasonably priced. Good luck

lotusbell · 14/08/2021 22:08

Another vote for the toilet stool type of thing. My mum had one in the later stages of pancreatic cancer and it really helped when she was too tired. In fact I use one now, they're really good for constipation. And for the sore skin, any nappy cream helps soothe, in my experience.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 14/08/2021 22:09

I had terrible piles after my last baby.

He need suppositories, cang remember the name but the doctor can prescribe them, or you may be able tk get them from the chemist without a prescription. And anusol. The suppositories shrink the piles inside the abuser, and the anusol takes care of the ones on the outside.
Your poor dh. I was honestly in agony with mine. Was like labour all over again.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 14/08/2021 22:12

The anusol helps with the soreness too. And Sudocreme might help sooth the area.

MrsPnut · 14/08/2021 22:13

Speak to the nurses at his GP’s practice, they are experts on this kind of thing. I’d recommend medihoney barrier cream, or cavillon barrier cream. Both of which I used after pelvic brachytherapy damage.
