Ectopic beats - how often do you get them?

I get them throughout the day on and off. Totally benign I'm told, but just curious how often others get them.

Sometimes 35 a minute for weeks on end. Then none at all for months.

jaychops · 12/08/2021 15:08

Oh gosh that must be difficult to live with when you're having a flare up @Willdoitlater!

I go through phases of having them hourly for days on end and then nothing for months. They're so disconcerting aren't they? Plenty of 24 and 48he ECG tapes later and apparently they are totally benign.

jaychops · 12/08/2021 15:19

@Samanabanana when you say hourly do you mean one per hour or a few of them?

I get them when I’m losing weight.

wineandsunshine · 13/08/2021 18:04

Every day 😩 worse with indigestion or stress.

Sometimes I get runs of them too.

They are horrible and really getting me down lately.

GoodbyeToCare · 13/08/2021 18:14

Off and on all day most days. I take medication to manage them but it doesn't always help. The beats also make me cough which is great in Covid times Hmm.

PullTheWeeds · 13/08/2021 18:20

Aw I get them daily I think, about 5 to 10 per day I'd say. I say I think because I've self diagnosed. They take my breath away like getting winded very briefly, or feel like when your stomach rumbles but it's up at my heart. I used to panic when I felt it, feel an adrenaline rush and get a bit worried, but now I'm used to them they just pass quite easily.

romdowa · 13/08/2021 18:27

Very rarely since I started treating my anemia

Jbck · 13/08/2021 18:28

Went through a bad time when I had dozens an hour most of the day for months. Have never been that bad again but probably a few a day most days now.
Did control them with beta blockers for a while but weaned off and they never returned as severely.
Have also had stress tests, scans, 24/48 & 72 hour tapes, kept diaries but no underlying cause.
Used to be very disconcerting but don’t bother me now unless I have a run of them , I barely notice.

QueenofBrickdon · 13/08/2021 18:30

I have had them most of the day for over a week. It's awful. It seems to happen for a couple of weeks and then goes away for months. Not sure what causes it.

PragmaticWench · 13/08/2021 19:12

I never knew there was a name for this! I've always had random moments, a few seconds long, where I can feel my heart slow/become irregular and I'm almost winded. Not dizzy as such but as though my breath has been taken away.

80sMum · 13/08/2021 19:21

I get them what seems like all the time! They've got markedly more frequent in the last year or so. To be honest, they're beginning to get me down a bit, as they make me cough - so I'm coughing every 10 to 60 seconds, depending on the gap until the next one.

@GoodbyeToCare I didn't know there is a medication for them! I've never been to see a doctor about mine. Maybe I should? What is the medication called that you take?
wineandsunshine · 13/08/2021 19:28

I am on bisoprolol 2.5mg per day - I'm not really sure they are helping though!

This is the same medication I take only I take 5mg per day and can up it to 7.5mg if needed. Cardiologist tells me most people are on a much higher dose.

Without them my resting heart rate is over 100 and the ectopic beats are much worse.

wineandsunshine · 13/08/2021 21:01

@GoodbyeToCare
Yeah they told me to up if needed and max 10mg but I didn't feel great on a higher dose 😞

Just wish there was a way to stop them!

CheerfulBunny · 13/08/2021 21:24

I get these but I didn't know what it was! I just thought they were palpitations. As a PP says they make me cough, often when I lie down in bed at night or when stressed. Much worse now I'm in perimenopause I think.

Stress definitely makes mine worse too. I've cut caffeine out completely to stop the effects of that. Decaf all the way!

I spent an evening in A&E thanks to the ectopic beats and coughed a lot (my heart beat was completely wonky) They knew the medication was working when the coughing reduced 😄.

thestrawberrygirl · 13/08/2021 21:53

All the time, more noticeable if I wake up in the middle of the night. Feel them much more if I've had booze, coffee, dark chocolate or not enough sleep or water. Had a heart stress test last week and a 24 holter just to make sure all is ok. I failed my work medical twice for them. ( not in UK, medical mandatory every year for office job)

inigomontoyahwillcox · 14/08/2021 22:17

I've "watched" this thread as I've been suffering from them for about 15 years and it gives me comfort/reassurance to see I'm not alone.

Some days I have none, some days a couple and some days almost constant (including runs of them for about 5 seconds). Had various ECGs and holster monitors, all came back clear ... then I had a huge post operative pulmonary embolism, the initial presentation was palpitations (although I recognised they were different to my usual), got a smidge of PTSD after that almost saw me off - so any palpitations I have these days I immediately catastrophise.

Anyway, at a party with my favourite people in the world right now - I know I'm super tired (only had 3 hrs sleep last night), had a few drinks and am excited (to see people who I love for the first time since 2019) - and they've reared their ugly head. So am sitting in the loo, on this thread - trying to rationalise them. It's hard.

Boombadoom · 14/08/2021 22:20

Sometimes I have them several times an hour for weeks. Others, none at all. Been told it’s benign too.

inigomontoyahwillcox · 14/08/2021 23:13

*holter - obvs

wineandsunshine · 15/08/2021 08:29

@inigomontoyahwillcox I hope you feel ok this morning?

I totally sympathise with you, I had to give up drinking three years ago at 35. It just triggered palps 😞

Undersnatch · 15/08/2021 08:32

Mine was picked up in pregnancy, happened much more frequently while pregnant. Now it varies, can have a few in a week then none for ages.
