My ds nursery has just rung to let me know hes had 4 mucky nappies today and his bottom and top of legs are red and have started to blister. They just wanted to let me know coz on the positive side they say hes absolutely fine in himself, has eaten a good lunch, had a good nap and doesn't seem bothered by it at all. They said I don't need to pick him up early coz hes otherwise absolutely fine. What to do? Can't get a docs aptmt coz you have to ring up in the morning. And would the doc just suggest nappy rash cream anyway? Poor ds has obviously eaten something thats disagreed with him. Has anyone any experience of this kind of reaction? Got another 45 mins in work to sit worrying about it.

I'm surprised they don't want you to pick him up, it's 3 dodgy nappies & you're out at our nursery to reduce the risk of cross infection.

ladymuck · 02/11/2004 16:00

Sounds as if it is an odd reaction to something - food, teething? At least it doesn't sound as if he is bothered by it.

I think that if you search for nappy rash there is a wonder cream sworn by a number of mums. I usually tip a lot of bicarb of soda into the bath to clam it down, and also leave them without nappies for as long as possible (but I don't have any carpets!)

mummytummy · 02/11/2004 16:01

How old is he skiingmummy - could it be teething? It can sometimes make them a bit squitty!

Poo2 · 02/11/2004 16:01

Hello! Sorry to hear about the nasty rash. Try ringing NHS direct - am sure you get the number off the net. I called them the other day to check if I could bf with a 24 hour bug thing. Doesn;t sound tooo serious if ds is still eating and happy as larry, but best to check these things, eh!

MissHoolie · 02/11/2004 16:03

Try Natural Balm from naturally nice. It is wonderful.

Bagpuss30 · 02/11/2004 16:05

Metanium is the cream you want, also the bicarb trick sounds good.

DD used to get this a lot and I think it can sometimes be down to teething/selective diet or maybe something that hasn't agreed with them. Hope he's better soon .

MissHoolie · 02/11/2004 16:06

Sorry this is it \link{http://www.naturalbalm.co.uk/here}

Kayleigh · 02/11/2004 16:06

Agree with Bagpuss30, Metanium is amazing.

bundle · 02/11/2004 16:08

I use metanium too, make sure you keep it out of their reach though as it's pretty powerful stuff.

MissHoolie · 02/11/2004 16:09

Natural Balm is as it says natural. The Metanium is quite potent.

skiingmummy · 02/11/2004 16:12

Ds will be 2 on 28th Dec.
Dh has a very sensitive tum and ds takes after him in all other respects so I could have expected this! Just worrying about what to do if his skin is blistering. Surely thats not normal?

I've just had a look on the NHS direct website Poo2 and think I will ring them later once I've seen the rash for myself.

Metanium, as others have said. Although I did see a rave review for this in the Daily Telegraph yesterday.

skiingmummy · 02/11/2004 16:27

Never heard of Metanium - sounds like a well kept Mummys secret!! Can you buy it over the counter at the chemists?

OP posts:
PuffTheMagicDragon · 02/11/2004 16:28

You can get metanium in Tesco, its brill.

Marina · 02/11/2004 16:29

It comes in a tube, skiingmummy, and you can get it from larger Boots and also independent pharmacies. It tends not to be sold in supermarkets. It really is the top stuff but unlike sudocrem, which is a good barrier cream, I think you should only use metanium to treat nappy rash.

carla · 02/11/2004 16:30

Yep - for some reason when dds were little to had to ask the pharmacist for it, but I saw it the other day on the shelves in Superdrug. It's WONDERFUL stuff!

mummylove · 02/11/2004 16:30

hello

nhs direct is 0845 46 47

they can be very useful for advice when quick advice is needed.

skiingmummy · 02/11/2004 16:30

Do you reckon its better than Sudocream coz thats the stuff I've got at home. If so I'll pick some up on the way to pick up ds.

OP posts:
PuffTheMagicDragon · 02/11/2004 16:31

Yes, you only need metanium if there's actual rash. A little goes a long way.

Marina · 02/11/2004 16:34

Definitely better than sudocrem for clearing up a problem. Sudocrem's fine for daily use.

emmatmg · 02/11/2004 17:03

Our DS3 hated sudocrem when he had a really sore bum, with blisters. He'd scream like it hurt even more. Plus I discovered sudocrem doesn't stick to the blisters.

Metanium on the other hand cleared the soreness and blisters up in no time. Maybe 24-36 hours.

(BTW all 3 DS's here have had blisters at some point, it's not unusual)

hewlettsdaughter · 02/11/2004 17:33

Another vote for metanium here. Bought it a week or so ago after seeing the rave reviews here on mumsnet - has helped my dd's soreness more than anything else (sudocrem, kamillosan) did.

I also can vouch for metanium plus after bath time dry bottom with a hairdryer to get the skin dry without rubbing their bot nad also the cool air is quite soothing.I wouldn't use wipes eitheras these can sting, even the sensitive ones

skiingmummy · 02/11/2004 20:23

Hi everyone.

Well picked ds up from nursery then to the chemist for metanium. Poor ds has rashes between his legs, under his willy and on his bottom cheeks. Its very red and like little blisters or pimples. It didn't seem to be troubling him until we wanted to wash the area at bedtime. We applied the metanium and that really upset him - he screamed like it was stinging. Anyway, he calmed down with a few favourite songs (Miss Pollys Dolly and Baa baa black sheep!), had his bedtime drink of milk then went out like a light!! Hoping the area will have calmed down a bit by tomorrow morning.

Thanks to everyone for all your responses and advice. Its so reassuring to have somewhere to go for almost instantaneous support and help!! I'll let you know whether the metanium does the trick!!!
