Very painful nappy rash-help please!

Ds1 has had the most horrendous nappy rash for the last couple of days,to the point of where he is screaming at every nappy change and it's getting harder to clean him with the wipes.I'm smothering him in Sudocreme which has worked in the past, but it's not working now.He is even asking me for medicine as it's so sore.
I'm off to the chemist in the morning to get something else,so thought I would ask opinions of what seems to clear it up,pretty fast, please.
Thanks.

Metanium is fab stuff, beats sudocream hands down. However may be worth going gp's to get a pescription if its bad nappy rash, as could be fungal/infected in which case might need something else.

RubySlippers · 13/11/2007 20:33

canestan - you can get it over the counter from the chemist

DS had awful nappy rash and the usual stuff just wasn't doing anything

canestan sorted it as well as lots of nappy off time

Heated · 13/11/2007 20:37

Yep, echo pp re metanium, available at supermarkets and chemists. Lovely yellow colour lol. And if you can risk it plenty of air time to the bottom!

madamy · 13/11/2007 20:42

Fungal looks like individual spots - red, raised, often with a 'head'. Canestan/any other anti fungal will only help if it is fungal so might want GP/HV to prescribe some.
We use Bepanthen as dd2 seems to be sensitive to sudocrem. If you get metanium, you need to wash it off daily as it sticks like glue lol!

Unfitmother · 13/11/2007 20:45

Try to avoid wipes whilst it's bad and just use water.

Bubbaloo · 13/11/2007 21:13

That's really helpful-thank you.
They do look like lots of red spots but I haven't noticed any heads on them. Will try and have a proper look tomorrow(if he'll let me),before I go to the chemist.
I did think about leaving him nappy free, but it seems a bit nippy to let him run around with nothing on his bottom half.

DD had this a few weeks ago. We stopped using wipes and reverted to cotton wool and water. We also got canesten 1% over the counter. Within a few days it was better.

margoandjerry · 13/11/2007 21:17

Hi, my dd has this too - red spots spreading everywhere, really angry looking. I think it's itchy too as she's trying to scratch. We've been using canesten for about a week but no improvement - in fact it's spreading. Off to the doctor tomorrow to see if there's something stronger we should be using.

She has literally never had nappy rash before (she's 13 mo) - just the occasional little bit of red soreness that metanium would sort in a trice. But this is really nasty.

If I get any more advice tomorrow I'll post it.

Maidamess · 13/11/2007 21:18

I heard dunking their bums in a bath of bicarb in water was good for soothing the old rash. It works for chicken pox, so why not nappy rash?

funnypeculiar · 13/11/2007 21:18

another vote for metanium - kicks sudocreme's arse

GColdtimer · 13/11/2007 21:22

Don't use wipes and go to the doctors if canesten doesn't work in a couple of days. I left dds far too long and it was a fungal infection. When it gets better, just make sure you use a decent barrier cream for a couple of weeks to stop it reappearing. My doctor recommended zinc and caster oil.

Desiderata · 13/11/2007 21:25

Another vote here for metanium.

If your dc is on solids and is not allergic to peanuts, I would also suggest including peanut butter in the diet on a fairly regular basis. I once read that it could help with ongoing nappy rash, so I tried it and it worked almost immediately.

I'm not saying it would work for every child, but it certainly worked for mine.

Good luck with it. It's a nasty business

mrspink27 · 13/11/2007 21:27

We use Weleda nappy change cream, which is (imho) better than the fabulous metanium, not quite as chalky or yellow.

Also beat up some egg white, and paint it on, makes a great barrier.

Bubbaloo · 13/11/2007 22:16

Thanks-I'm now torn between the Canesten and the Metanium.
I'll have a good look in the morning and if the spots have heads I'll get the Canesten and if not, then I'll try the Metanium I think.
Never heard about the peanut butter theory before but ds has it everyday on his toast and up until now has never had nappy rash.
So,if I start using a brrier cream,do I put that on once the nappy rash has cleared,or start putting it on now, before the Metanium/Canesten?{blush].

I think prehaps I made too much of the 'heads' iykwim! I mean they are proper little spots rather than an all over redness.

elliemac · 13/11/2007 22:26

Sorry to butt in. Have tried most of these as DD had a red raw backside while teething. It was really bad. Anyway it was Drapolene cream that cleared it up in an instant. Would highly recommend it above the others.

nimnom · 13/11/2007 22:28

I agree with twofalls. Don't leave it too long before you go to the docs. ds2 had the most hideous nappy rash with blisters(felt like such a bad mum) that appeared overnight but the stuff on prescription cleared it up straight away.

Bubbaloo · 13/11/2007 22:31

Thanks.I'll get the cream in the morning and if it's still really bad by Friday morning,I'll take him to the doctors and get something stronger on prescription.

dd rarely gets nappy rash she is cutting her back teeth and she is like your dc at nappy change time more often than not just recently i have been using plain water on a cheap flannel (that can be disposed of easily if needs be) and the god send has to be METANIUM it clears it to nearly normal withing cpl nappy changes as soon as dd's bottom looks as if it going red out comes the METANIUM

dd666 · 13/11/2007 22:38

also if you go straight to the gp he/she should prescibe canestan or metanium or something they find suitable

margoandjerry · 14/11/2007 10:31

Just back from the doctors - he agreed that it was probably fungal (lots of spots and obviously itchy as well as sore) and said that if canesten had not yet cleared it up (we've been using it a week to little effect) she obviously needed another fungicide with steroid so he's prescribed us something else (myasticin or something like that - will look at the tube when I get home).

He said canesten sometimes isn't the most effective on these things and if it hasn't worked (or started to work) within a week, you need something stronger but you need a dr to prescribe as they are not available over the counter.

Agree that metanium is the best for normal nappy rash. It clears things up overnight. But this was not responding to metanium. Or sudafed, or bicarb baths or anything. HTH.

Bubbaloo · 14/11/2007 12:05

Thanks, that's really helpful.Hope your dd's rash clears up some.
I'm just waiting for my mum to come and sit with the boys so I can pop to the chemist.I'm going to try some Metanium first,so fingers crossed.Haven't used any wipes this morning and have been changing ds's nappy every hour on the dot.Only had one pooey nappy so far and just used warm water with a tiny drop of Dettol and a soft flannel.Have still been applying lots of Sudocreme and it definately dosn't seem as red as it has been.

Bubbaloo, hope you are making progress with the nappy rash. the cream we got from the dr was actually called Nystaform and made a difference on day one. It's definitely on the way out. If you find the canesten isn't helping, maybe ask your dr for that.

Bubbaloo · 16/11/2007 12:37

Glad to hear you have an improvement-we do too.
I bought the Metanium and although it hasn't cleared up completely yet,it's definately on the way out now and ds isn't making any fuss at nappy changing time.

Thanks for everyone's input-much appreciated.
