Lump on armpit

crwodne · 28/03/2021 14:03

Hey everyone last night I noticed when I touched my armpit there's a lump underneath the skin. It's not visible when you look you have to feel for it, it was sore moving my arm last night however this morning it's only sore to touch. It's about the size of a golf ball. Any ideas what this could be?

No idea but I'd speak to the GP tomorrow.

emmajayn3 · 28/03/2021 14:50

Have you recently had a covid vaccine? A few people have had lumps after that

crwodne · 28/03/2021 14:52

Yeah I'll have to ring tomorrow and no I haven't I'm only young

Hey! I'm actually in a similar position to you - felt a lump in my armpit last night too. Mines smaller than a golf ball though - I can't really tell how big it is but it is really sore and tender. I don't know if it's linked to my period cycle, stress, being run down or what. Will have to call the doctors though and see if they will do an examination rather than a telephone appointment.

Hey there let me know how you get on! Hopefully it's not anything too serious for the both of us. I've started using new deodorant don't know if that could cause anything. I've also been very stressed lately too.

Sounds like a lymph node

Bellag79 · 28/03/2021 20:22

Please do get checked, an armpit lump was the only symptom my mum had when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Mvshrln · 28/03/2021 20:44

@crwodne fingers crossed eh! It's so difficult getting doctor's appointments isn't it, especially on Monday mornings. I keep prodding around and comparing each armpit but I'm confusing myself really. It hurts when I lift my arm up so I just have no idea what it is.
Stuff like this is so stressful!

MissSmiley · 28/03/2021 22:35

@crwodne
@Mvshrln
It's most likely a cyst but one of my best friends had a lump in her armpit, she found it in the shower, ignored it, died of breast cancer a year later at 41

AnnaFiveTowns · 28/03/2021 23:03

Bloody hell @MissSmiley - way to terrify somebody! Yes, she needs to get it checked out but it's very unlikely to be cancer.

luciles · 29/03/2021 08:15

Thanks everyone hoping for the best. @Mvshrln I've just got a doctors appointment over the phone for Saturday. Any luck on your end?

Mvshrln · 29/03/2021 08:44

@luciles I've got a phonecall later on this morning. Sort of drifting between being calm and worried about what they will say. I'm trying not to poke about my armpit but it definitely feels less sore after a rest.

Worknoplay · 29/03/2021 08:47

I have one, it became visible about three years ago. It's a ball of fat (charming, I know, I'm not even overweight) called lipoma. The GP had a good feel, I had to lift my arm in every possible position for her to check. I have it checked regularly to see if there's a change in mass or texture. I check it regularly in the shower.

Call your GP, and be prepared for lots of questions about your general health and history of cancer in your family.

Mvshrln · 29/03/2021 10:35

Just spoken with the GP - it was a bit of a brief convo (I wish they could do in person appointments). She said it sounded like a blocked/swollen lymph node and not to be concerned at the moment, but to keep an eye on it over the next 2 weeks. She also asked if I have any sores or lesions on that arm/hand and I've got an oven burn recently so it could be due to that healing which has caused the node to come up.
I really do wish they would check it in person though because they'd know more by feeling it. I'll see how I go this week and will ask for an in person appointment if it doesn't improve.

Hopefully it's nothing too serious for you. Do come back and let me know what they say. I am worried too about mine but trying not too overthink.

Mvshrln · 29/03/2021 10:36

@AnnaFiveTowns ha, I guess posting on a forum like this is bound to result in some scary comments!! D:

Well it's good that you have some idea what it is. I know what you mean though about over the phone appointments I thought that too, how can they tell without looking. I'll let you know what the GP says about mine. Feels like so long to wait 😣.
Mvshrln · 29/03/2021 10:39

@luciles good idea about trying not to overthink. I chucked a bit of sudocrem on my armpit last night which if anything helped me feel the area a bit better. I'm not going to shave or put deodorant on that area either. Plus I'm not going to wear underwire bras (I'd actually only started wearing them again in the past week). I just want to avoid additional discomfort or bothering it. Hope you are okay and we can lean on each other whilst we wait for answers!

I've been constantly comparing armpits like you have, it's scary! Yeah I'm not shaving or putting deodorant on it either even though it's hard not to haha. Hope you're okay too and it is reassuring that we're in a similar situation and you've got a few answers, I'll let you know how I get on. Did she say it might go down/go away or just to keep an eye on it?

Mvshrln · 30/03/2021 14:19

@luciles just seen that my comment yesterday didn't go through! It's hard not to poke and prod but that does seem to make it worse so I'm trying not to! Well she said to keep an eye on it and to call back if it's not gone in 2 weeks and to look up lymph nodes on the NHS site. I was like yeah I've obsessively looked at all of the websites about it lol. Do you have any cuts or anything on the arm that has the lump? I think that's why mines come up because my body is trying to heal an oven burn I got recently!

crwodne · 03/04/2021 09:37

Hey @Mvshrln sorry for the late reply I've just had a call from the GP she said mine sounds like a cyst she's going to look at it today. I'll let you know what happens. Has yours changed or have you rang the GP at all?

OP posts:
Notavegan · 03/04/2021 09:43

I have one, they said it's a lipoma like another poster above. Been there 20 years now, but I did get it checked at the time.
However, when I breastfed my babies milk came out of it! So I'm guessing mine is extra breast tissue. Bodies are strange sometimes.

folloyourarro · 03/04/2021 09:55

Have you shaved recently? I often get painful bumps after shaving, some kind of ingrown hair I guess, but I went to the Dr first time to double check, do get checked to be on the safe side.

AyyX · 03/04/2021 10:12

It could be a build up of ingrown hairs

crwodne · 03/04/2021 12:40

hi all thanks for your replies. GP said it's most likely a cyst and has prescribed antibiotics.
