D&V while on ABS

I started with D on Monday night and the GP put me on antibiotics on Tuesday for an ear infection. They said to go in to see them yesterday as had diagnosed over the phone and I mentioned that I was having D which they put down to a side-affect of the ABS and said to keep taking them. However, Iam concerned that I was sick a couple of times yesterday evening, and haven’t been able to eat. When I go to the toilet its really loose watery and full of mucus. I have had these ABS before with out problems, so wondering if there is anything I should be doing besides fluids and resting as much as possible while WfH.

It all feels a bit extream and I have never had such watery D. However, don’t want to trouble the GP if its all to be expected.

It won't be side effects of the antibiotics if you started with diarrhea before taking them. You can get diarrhea from any infection. Go with what your GP said regarding carrying on taking them and if your ear infection doesn't clear up call them back.

I apreciate that before i started the Abs it couldnt be them but dont think i have ever been so bad. Sorry if TMI it litterally looks like water with mucus.

GoodNewsAhead · 26/03/2021 08:09

I was on that last year. Wasn't vomiting on them and can't recall if I had diarrhoea but a lot of abs list gastro complaints as a side effect. How are you feeling now?

HamFisted · 27/03/2021 21:13

If you're shaky you could well be dehydrated and need medical attention. Call 111 if this is still the case.

GoodNewsAhead · 28/03/2021 00:33

Thanks thingws improved on Friday. But have gone back to verry loose. I have been 3 times in the last 2 hours but dont feel so shaky.

Is seeming to be getting worse again. I seem to mannage about 45 mins sleep before being woken for the toilet

Ring your doctors to check and try get someone to get you done dioralyte. Hope you feel better soon xx

Badger2021 · 28/03/2021 05:54

Ring 111 for advice. It's been a week now.

GoodNewsAhead · 30/03/2021 01:50

I rang the GP’s too late to get an appointment but have been waking up every 30 minutes or so to go to the toilet. Finally got sick of things as also now have pain so went on NHS 111 online and am now waiting for OOH to call me back.

Myshitisreal · 30/03/2021 01:53

I was thinking about this thread and you earlier. Did you get some dioralyte.

Goodness, you really should have insisted as an emergency. Stick on the phone please, you definitely need medical advice.

GoodNewsAhead · 30/03/2021 02:32

Thanks for thinking of me.

Yes I have been having some diarolite but struggling now to get enough fluids in as have a burning sensation in my throat all the time, almost like a strong mint is stuck and it makes me feel like I am choking when I try to eat or drink.

I have been a bit unlucky with the receptionists I have been speaking to. Most are really good but the one I spoke to was very much call back tomorrow or ring 111 and forgot to ask if they could get a sample tested.

The nurse at out of hours did not seem at all concerned when she phoned. Esentialy said to stop taking the antibiotics and sip flat coak.

It didn’t seem right that she was saying to use flat coak as diorilite is not as good.
I also didn’t think I should be using imodium with D with lots of mucus, but she said to take imodium.
I am really struggling to get enough fluids in as tonight am going to the toilet around every 30 minutes and 5 to 10 ml every half an hour is not replacing the vollume that is coming out. Struggling to actually drink as my throat feels burny and when I swollow it feels like I am choaking. I also have a bit of a headache.

Myshitisreal · 30/03/2021 03:25

That hard to swallow is an awful feeling. Hmm I don't know if I would take that nurse's advice. This is terrible.

What's the situation with your doctors? I've had to ring mine a lot recently. I just constantly hit redial very obsessively until I get through. Its so difficult with covid. The last couple of times have taken like 140 redials. Is that an Option??? This doesn't seem right to me

Myshitisreal · 30/03/2021 03:31

This is the best nhs link I can find. The nhs.co.uk seems to combine it with vomiting. www.nhsinform.scot/illnesses-and-conditions/stomach-liver-and-gastrointestinal-tract/diarrhoea#symptoms-of-diarrhoea

GoodNewsAhead · 30/03/2021 03:38

Generally if you phone my GP’s at 8 and redial / hang on you will get an call back that day. If you spend all night awake and then call them at 8:30 generally nothing left for today call back later / speak to the walk in on the phone.
