I had large lower molar extraction 4 weeks ago exactly.
Had been hurting for few weeks. It was root filled and had lots of fillings.
The x-ray didn't show very much but I did have very deep pockets either side so it was decided to get rid of it.

By Day 2 it just didn't feel right so I went back and he packed it.
Then it was the weekend and it had started to get really rank but he said he didn't think it was an open socket.
Just that it was taking its time.
The following week I was put on on a course of antibiotics because of the yellow and the pain.
No improvement so he x-rayed it again and just said again it was slow to heal.

The top of the extraction site has as we gun to heal now and I was also given a second lot of antibiotics.
But the main problem over the last 2 weeks is the extreme pain on the sides of the extraction the gum near my cheek.
Very very tender and I still can't eat on that side so I went back again and he did he 360 X-ray and said everything looked fine no damage to nerve no no bone problems etc.

I did raise concerns about gum cancer but he reassured me there was nothing to see c&f I told all thinking ok it's just going to take time but there's been no improvement now in 4 days.
This was a private dentist and care has been ok, but I still don't really understand why I've got so much pain and tenderness in the sides compared to the top.
I also hurtt in my jaw and up to my ear.
Is it just a matter of more time?

Very fed up and exhausted by this 6 week event.
Any advice on healing most welcome, as all I seem to be able to find dry socket problems.
There is a little bit of bone showing in the socket but it's not by the really bad side of my gum. And anyhow he said that would be best leaving and not interfering with at the present time.
Thankyou any one.
I don't know when to go back I just feel embarrassed and maybe I doing just need to give it another few weeks.

Please excuse the mass paragraph.

I did use spaces but they don't appear to have been included in my post, so thank you in advance.

I'm not an expert but after having had a root filling and bridge, I was warned the uncomfrtable feeling would go on a long time, and had painkillers.

Is your bruxism current? I am having terrible trouble with that on it's own, so if you are grinding teeth that have been worked on, that could be slowing recovery?

Potpourriandpennysweets · 10/03/2021 22:38

Do you have a mouth guard or could you get a temporary mouth guard for the Bruxism? It may be that you are dislodging the forming clot and this is delaying healing.

Potpourriandpennysweets · 10/03/2021 22:39

Have you been advised against saline or alternative mouth rinses?

thesunwillout · 10/03/2021 23:12

Hello hello,

Yes I have a mouthguard which I can only use the last couple of nights as the wound was so raw and the molars either side of the gap too tender to put in on too.
They've probably moved too.
So I've cut the sides of mouth guard so it's not touching the gum line.

I know that my clenching has probably caused this tooth to weaken, or at least the gum around it became loose over the years.

Interesting to hear that a dentist has said it takes time.
I've never had this before and expected it to have healed skin wise by now.

I can't even touch the bit of gum by my cheek. But also when I have checked I can't feel any shards or anything. It just feels as tender as a boil would be if that makes sense.

Dentist didn't confirm dry socket at very start, but I think it did develop.
It's been packed twice.

One of the holes is still pretty, erm, holey. Maybe that's the prob. It needs to fill in more.

I don't know if anything I've said is helpful.

But I'm very grateful for the replies as it's been very depressing.

Oh, no info about rinses, except the salt ones after 24 hours. Tried to be careful, yet effective.

Haven't used any other mouthwashes till 2 days ago and I've got a Dentyl one, no alcohol.

During all of this I've gently swished a manual water irrigator near the wound to get any food out.

I've done so much lol.

In my desperation to address the pain of bruxism, I came across this. Not for me but possibly useful for you, i don't know. Looks a bit too good to be true.

thesunwillout · 10/03/2021 23:34

Hi there thanks, I bought gengivel stuff a couple of weeks ago but deternined the wound to fresh to apply it too. I also have clove oil.

Only used that diluted early on once, and only after the packing stuff had fallen off.

The bruxism is a terrible thing isn't it. I got my guard about 8 years ago. But previous to that I'd cracked alot of fillings.
My bruxism did get alot better using the guard.
How long have you had it Luna? X

Potpourriandpennysweets · 10/03/2021 23:40

When I had a dry socket infection it was because I was accidentally dislodging the clot through bruxism and because it was sensitive I kept touching it with my tongue (mostly at night or when I forgot not to, not intentionally!). I used a numbing cream in the end, which helped me to leave it alone, and some clove oil.

Potpourriandpennysweets · 10/03/2021 23:41

I was told not to rinse with the dry socket, but with another tooth out to rinse (no dry socket infection)

LunaHeather · 10/03/2021 23:51

Potpourri so there's a numbing cream OP could use? That sounds like a good idea.

OP about 15 years. I was just on another thread wondering if it's time to try Botox but I'm scared of looking plastic, or, doing serious damage to a nerve. It is designed to paralyse after all but both doc and dentist have suggested it, I'm getting lots of other issues due to it.

thesunwillout · 11/03/2021 00:22

Potpourri how long after your extraction did u have the dry socket?

My dentist didn't say I had dry socket, but packed the wound with that brown clove and zinc stuff when I went back 2 days after.
I think it had started. Then it became infected.
Again dentist said oh it's just stale blood, but it was not it was yellow.

That's when I requested antibiotics.

Perhaps even after this it became a dry socket. No idea.

Luna has the guard not helped you to stop pushing down. I think that's what happened with me, my brain clocked the bouncy resistance.

OP posts:
LunaHeather · 11/03/2021 10:22

OP, no, the guard doesn't stop me clenching my jaw.

I might start a separate thread.

It sounds like you had an infection before they gave you antibiotics?

Tigertigertigertiger · 11/03/2021 10:45

Have sent you a PM

@LunaHeather

I completely get being over excited 🤗

It's very isolating. My bruxism has lasted years and it affects so much.

Thanks
I put a thread in Chat.

Are you feeling better this morning?

thesunwillout · 11/03/2021 11:43

I've decided to ignore it and keep going.
The message from Tiger has encouraged me to bear with it.

I have naproxen for something else so am going to try those instead of the ibuprofen.

I tried my guard last night but had to remove it as the pressure on the teeth either side of extraction was too much.

Today I'm not going to touch it to see if it's still tender, look at it or give it attention.

I'll check your thread
Xx
