Has anyone actually managed to stop menstrual migraines?

I get two menstrual migraines per month- like clockwork.. one on ovulation day and one on PMS day. I've gone through topiramate (DO NOT RECOMMEND), paramax, propanalol, aspirin, co-codamol, ibuprofen, magnesium supplements COQ-something and another supplement I can't recall. I don't drink alcohol any more and I try to sleep 8 hours. My diet isn't perfect but it's fine. My BMI is 20. Nothing shifts them. Has anyone had non-stop menstrual migraines and had a treatment plan which has actually stopped them? Please save me!!

The pill Cezerette (sorry I might have spelled it wrong). I basically had to leave my job because my health down hill so much with migraines. I eventually decided to go on the pill (just to get rid of my periods) and my life came back.

Add in Keto diet and C25K and I feel the least inflamed and best for years.

AnnaMagnani · 10/03/2021 21:47

I'm on topiramate and it is fine for me - although I have been very disappointed not to have the weight loss side effect.

I do have the aphasia side effect but only to the extent of occasionally not being able to remember a word - no-one would know I have it and I haven't felt slowed down.

Also if you aren't TTC being on Cezarette eliminated my hormonal migraines. No cycles, no cyclical migraines Smile

Still had all the other migraines so worked my way through preventers to topiramate which I am VERY happy with. It's not perfect but it is right for me. I tried 2 other meds which didn't suit which I know work brilliantly for other people - we are all different.

I was awful on an oestrogen based pill. Much better on the mini pill that is just progesterone. I did have migraines when I wasn't using the pill before conception but they went when I was pregnant. My body does not like oestrogen

Iceskatingfan · 10/03/2021 21:56

The combined pill helped mine. And a divorce genuinely improved the severity and frequency of my migraines through reduction of stress 😂

CoffeeBeansGalore · 10/03/2021 21:59

For hormonal headaches & migraines my gp recommended super vitamin B complex (high dose) every day. And if I feel one coming on to take 3 aspirin as soon as possible. I then go to bed if I can and try to sleep. I usually feel fine after a few hours, rather than it dragging on for 24-48 hours.

Tronkmanton · 10/03/2021 22:00

Mini pill - game changer. Wish I’d found out years ago.

parttimecarriemathison · 10/03/2021 22:07

Mirena coil. I didn’t want to have it but agreed in the end after lots of gynae problems including ovarian cysts, fibroids and endo. It has stopped my bleeding so heavily which in turn seems to have reduced the endo inflammation and pain but the side effect has been the menstrual migraines stopping which had become horrific. I have managed to shift a stone which would not shift which has in itself helped with PCOS symptoms. Not perfect and I still suffer with various gynae related symptoms but hand on heart my situation has improved so much. I still get the occasional migraine - alcohol, extreme stress and weirdly blue cheese being triggers but the pain and vomiting and brain fog which went on for days with menstrual migraine is behind me. It’s been 18 months and it took a few months to get to this steady state.

Neeko · 10/03/2021 22:27

Sinutab helps me a lot. I've tried other sinus treatments but no other one works as well.

DramaAlpaca · 10/03/2021 22:30

I never got migraines when I was pregnant or breastfeeding, and they disappeared totally with the menopause - but OP I don't think any of that will be of much help to you, sorry.

Jaffajam · 10/03/2021 22:33

I have been on Candesartan for approx 2 years. It has massively reduced the frequency and severity of my symptoms. Prior to this I was suffering for anywhere up to 5 days a month.

Yes by taking a prenatal and drinking 2-3l of water a day. I also take extra vitamin D (D3).
Grumpasaurus · 10/03/2021 22:38

Botox.

It is the only time thing that has completely eliminated my migraines.

RooRey1 · 10/03/2021 22:41

Hi. With the help of an ammmmazzzing consultant who specialises in hormone migraines I have been able to eliminate mine within 4 months! Her fee was worth every penny. It was also relief to be told that no 'standard migraine' drugs help as I thought I was going mad not being able to find restbite. Her website is www.annemacgregor.com.
I really hope you find some relief from them.
Xx

Yes! I went to an osteopath, a really good cranial osteopath
I went from throwing up with pain and lying in bed for days to
Never having a migraine ever again 😃😃😃😃😄😃😃

lollipoprainbow · 10/03/2021 22:48

I've been on cerazette and my menstrual migraines stopped as did my periods ! I still get the odd migraine but nowhere as bad as I used to and they're usually caused by lack of sleep.

bellissimiaow · 10/03/2021 23:00

I've suffered from menstrual migraines for over 25 years. Sumatriptan was the only thing that worked but in the last 6 months this stopped working and I've been crippled with them - 5-day long ones every month.

I've done a lot of research about it and have done the following:

No caffeine
Stopped taking pain killers and sumatriptan as they were causing rebound migraines - went cold turkey
Supplements - magnesium glycinate, Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) both medically proven to reduce migraine.

Just by doing this I've had 2 periods now with no migraine at all - I don't know which one thing has stopped them or if it's a combination of them all but I'm just so relieved they've stopped that I'm carrying on with it.

You know I'm vegan so that might not actually be helping if vitamin b is beneficial. I do take the vegan supplements but I might see about adding b complex

Rebound headaches are so unfair

I have suffered for a couple of years and like you mine occur like clock work, but have got worse during lockdown probably due to stress. Also my PMT had gradually got worse too.

Dr prescribed sertraline 50mg to take every day and Sumatriptan 50mg to take as soon as I het a migraine and I am feeling so much better

I wish I had gone to the doctor sooner but glad I finally have some medication

LavenderDiamond · 11/03/2021 16:14

I'd second the triptans. And a decent medication for prophylaxis.

I've tried a number (about 10!). Currently on Candesatan and then triptans as needed. No caffeine no alcohol no fun. No painkillers ever.

Bloody awful tbh but the prophylactic med has helped a little.

I've be recommended mirena also.

MrBloomsLeftVeg · 11/03/2021 16:21

Daith piercing has stopped mine too. Nothing ibg worked before that

GADDay · 11/03/2021 16:35

Maxalt (Rizatriptan). It has literally saved me from hormonal migraines.

It is a strong drug but wards off my pre-menstrual migraines before they set in (sometimes for 5 days).

No fun is the order of the day. You can drag my one morning espresso out of my cold dead hands as I do not drink, smoke or do recreational drugs so I need something a bit cheeky to keep me going. I'm being overdramatic, I will cut it out if all else fails. Reluctantly.

I've only been suffering with them for 1 year but sumatriptan works wonders for me. I hope they continue to work as they're the difference between living or being incapacitated.
