Started bleeding around ovulation time

quiteathome · 28/02/2021 13:29

I am early 40s, last year I started having some mid cycle bleeding. This seems to be around the time when I should be ovulating. (I track my periods on an ap, and it ties in)

I went to the doctor and had some tests and was told that I would have a gynae referral. Anyway, they forgot to do the referral and I was busy with life. Mid cycle bleeding is now heavier and I asked for another referral. I had a letter, but have heard nothing as yet from the gynae department. (I phoned and apparently the referral is with the consultant)

Anyway has anyone else started to get midcycle bleeding and it all been ok? I am assuming that it is nothing serious otherwise I would have been seen more quickly under the 2w/w.

It has been worse this month, and I am having a bit of a wobble. I am unsure of when to phone the gynaecology department again. I phoned on the 18th February. The letter said not to contact them before the 16. Apparently the waiting time is around 37 weeks in this area, according to the NHS website.

And as my problem is very minor, and probably nothing to worry about. in the grand scheme of things unsure what to do next.

So has anyone started to get mid cycle bleeding? I suspect it could be an age thing. (I am not on any hormonal birth control and I have always had pretty easy periods. Although they are steadily getting a lot more painful)

It's called 'mittleschmirtz' (or something!) I got it all the time, it means you are ovulating and can actually be quite painful.

Once I knew what it was I was quite reassured by it.

(50 now and menopausal by 45 so doesn't apply, started around 25/30)

But do get checked out if it getting heavier and you are worried. Mine was not heavy, but as I say, sometimes quite painful.

Vickles20 · 28/02/2021 13:44

I’m 45. My periods come usually every 26-28 days. But the last 3 times. They come every 14-15 days.
I’m putting it down to being peri menopausal
I had a routine smear 6 months ago and it was clear.
I mentioned it to my doctor during a phone call about something else. And she didn’t seem concerned.

I’m not in pain. It’s normal flow etc.

Hi OP. I don't really have any advice but I have had mid cycle spotting the last 2 cycles. The first one was on and off for 5 days and then last month it was 5 solid days of spotting that was heavier. I've decided to wait another month and call the GP if it happens again. I'm 40 so also suspect its hormones going haywire with age! Especially as its happening around ovulation. Is yours spotting or heavier needing a pad? Maybe you could call your GP and say that it's getting heavier still and if they think that's a cause for concern they might be able to speed your appointment up with gyne?

quiteathome · 02/03/2021 12:50

Thanks all.

I will wait for my gynae appointment. And monitor.

Today a run seemed to set it off. Entirely possible it was a coincidence I suppose.

Although it is probably nothing, or it is just hormone related. It is a bit stressful.

Have you still not had any news on when your gynae appointment will be? I called my GP last week about my mid cycle bleeding and she's referred me for an ultrasound. My appointment is in 3 weeks and and results get sent to my GP. Maybe it's quicker because I'm not going to see a consultant just get scanned? GP said it could be caused by fibroids which are benign but very common.

quiteathome · 28/03/2021 16:00

No news. It is just with the consultant. That is all I know.

When I phoned them a few weeks ago they said August as they are still delayed due to COVID.

Just got an appointment. Will be seen in April

Hi op i had this but mine was very heavy and i had breast cancer last year, so my gp asked for a pelvic ulteasound at my local hospital( much quicker than a gynae referal) where they found quite a large cyst on my ovary. This has booted me up the gynae queue and means ill now be seen in 2 weeks. Could you explain the bleeding is heavier and ask fir a pelvic U/S or will you be seen before then?

ladyflower23 · 31/03/2021 20:04

That's good not much longer to wait! Let me know what they say and I'll update after my scan.

curlyLJ · 31/03/2021 21:24

I had very similar about 2 years ago (so I was about 46) and it coincided with ovulation and vigorous exercise, including running, would often set it off.
I was referred under the 2 week thing, so was taken very seriously.
It turned out I had a harmless polyp which was removed during a hysteroscopy - all done in about 30 mins, I didn't have to stay in or anything.

quiteathome · 01/04/2021 07:12

Thank you.
I am so glad I don't have to wait until August which was the worry at one point.

I will update after the appointment.

Appointment was today.

Cervix looks fine. No abnormal lumps in abdomen. So going to have an ultrasound scan to check for polyps higher up.

It is most likely to be hormonal changes though, and depending how much it is bothering me I can try birth control pills.

I started having bleeding with ovulation at about age 30. I’ve had smears and a couple of pelvic ultrasounds since then and nothing abnormal showed up. Glad your tests are looking clear so far.

ladyflower23 · 20/04/2021 23:05

That's good news op although it would also be good to have a reason! I had ultrasound yesterday and all looked normal so guess it must be hormonal. Waiting to hear from GP to find out what she suggests.

quiteathome · 21/04/2021 08:04

A reason would be great. However as long as there is nothing sinister I am happy.

@ladyflower23 What can I expect from the ultrasound? Is it relatively quick and painless

WussyMum · 21/04/2021 08:07

Hi @quiteathome - the exact same thing happened to me a few years ago. Mid-cycle bleeding, running could set it off, also sex could trigger it. It was incredibly annoying. Turned out I was in perimenopause and my hormones had started to go a bit haywire.

quiteathome · 21/04/2021 08:33

My mum did not go through menopause until 50. So I have probably got around ten years of crazy hormones.

Also on the covid boards lots of talk about Covid affecting menstrual cycles. This started not long after I have Covid for the first time. Wondering if Covid has an effect on female hormones.

OP posts:
ladyflower23 · 21/04/2021 09:12

@quiteathome it was fine. Had transabdominal first with full bladder then had a wee and they did transvaginal. Bit uncomfortable at times but not painful and the whole appointment lasted about 15 minutes.

WussyMum · 21/04/2021 09:14

Oh that's interesting, I hadn't heard anything about covid potentially affecting cycles. How strange! But I suppose any viral infection could have an impact . . .

Just as a side note, it doesn't necessarily follow maternal history - my mum went through menopause at 50-ish too. I started mine at 32 Sad

quiteathome · 26/04/2021 16:57

Sorry I had not got around to relying to @WussyMum and @ladyflower23

Not got a date for the ultrasound yet. Hopefully it won't be too long. However I am less worried about it now.

And I have heard a bit about covid/ the vaccine disturbing menstual cycles. I wonder if it is also stress etc.

Wondering if this is just peri-menopause. Although I have now bled after the last three runs I have been on, and I have not been that far. Only 5k or so.

Thank you to everyone who has replied on the thread so far. I will update once they have hopefully told me everything is normal eventually

OP posts:
ladyflower23 · 26/04/2021 22:27

@quiteathome I had a call from my GP surgery to make a phone appointment to talk about the results of my ultrasound. I'd already had a text to say that it was normal and no further action would be taken so this is a surprise and I'm interested to hear what she has to say.
The radiologist was asking me lots of questions and suggested it could be hormonal so I said that perhaps I am peri menopausal and she said I was a bit young for that (40) so guess there are other hormonal things that can cause these symptoms. Anyway I will update after my appointment. I am expecting hormonal contraception will be suggested.
Hopefully you won't have to wait too long for ultrasound.

ladyflower23 · 28/04/2021 22:49

GP is arranging blood tests to check thyroid and other hormone stuff and depending on results suggested I go on the pill to reset.

quiteathome · 29/04/2021 07:05

It sounds like it is moving.

Do you want to go on the pill? I am worried that, that is the solution for me. I remember I making me a bit crazy last time.

OP posts:
quiteathome · 29/04/2021 07:10

Although hopefully there some better alternatives now, from the one I was on before. So I won't discount it out of hand.
