Botox for Bruxism

RunningOnMusic · 17/02/2021 21:13

Has anyone had botix for bruxism and has it worked? I have had a mouth guard at night for a few years but clenching and grinding my teeth continues... with migraines and more damage to my teeth. Saw the dentist today who is referring me for botox. Has anyone had this and did it work? Can I also sneakily ask for my 11s to be done at the same time ;) Honestly though the jaw aches and head aches need to stop...

Noone? :(

I feel for you OP Flowers I may look into it too. I also wear a mouth guard at night, but it only protects my teeth and doesn't prevent nightly waking with jaw pain and headaches.
No answers, but solidarity and a bump for you. I know how horrible it is.

Whenwillow · 21/02/2021 18:34

Where have you been referred to for the botox btw? Would it be through the maxillo-facial unit in hospital?

RunningOnMusic · 22/02/2021 11:33

Thank you. A specialist in my dental practice does the botox.

I would love to have Botox for my bruxism. I’ve been suffering for years and the night guards haven’t helped as I just bite through them. No one has ever suggested Botox. I saw a maxillofacial consultant who just gave me some very basic exercises and told me to get rid of my stress because if I get rid of stress/anxiety then I’d get rid of the bruxism and the tmj disorder I also suffer from. Very helpful - Not!
Hope it goes well op.

Whenwillow · 22/02/2021 14:15

I've been told that too @ImaHogg. It's a work in progress!

Whenwillow · 22/02/2021 14:15

Please keep us posted OP. Sorry we haven't been useful

KarensChoppyBob · 22/02/2021 14:16

I'd love to know too. I broke two back molars from it.

Whenwillow · 22/02/2021 14:37

@KarensChoppyBob do you have a mouth guard? I was forever breaking teeth and fillings, but it's been a lot better since the mouth guard.

DonLewis · 22/02/2021 14:41

My dsis has TMJ and has had botox for it (by a dentist). It lasted about 10 weeks and in that time her jaw was pain free and she could open her mouth wider than she's ever been able to open since she started suffering with TMJ. I know its a slightly different reason to have it, but she'll be having it regularly from now on! (being her sister, I did tell her that her jaw definitely looked younger.. Grin)

Kisskiss · 25/02/2021 00:27

I’ve done it.. in fact I just did my third round yesterday.. my jaw’s stopped clicking ( abs I used to get periodic pains) and my face looks slimmer Grin

Whenwillow · 25/02/2021 06:21

I'm so tempted! I've woken up yet again with painful jaw 😩

KarensChoppyBob · 25/02/2021 14:31

Yes was offered a crappy NHS plastic mouth guard willow, that caused more pain than it relieved.

Sillybillypoopoomummy · 25/02/2021 17:20

I have this problem - shootng pains out along my cheekbone today :-( my dentist wants me to spend £1000 on a mouthguard and was not keen on the idea of botox. Those who have done it - was it NHS or private??

sophmum31 · 25/02/2021 17:33

After reading this thread I've just booked to go and get this done next week. I have constant tension in my jaw, sometimes the muscles spasm when I'm really stressed and it's so painful, when I'm not stressed it's a constant low level pain. My jaw also clicks when I talk and eat. The dentist I spoke to said I have to have a consultation but he is extremely confident it will help me. Should last about 3 months and is £150. If that takes away my pain it is well worth it after years of mouth guards that don't really do much!

Kisskiss · 25/02/2021 19:16

Wow 150! I paid 270 but it lasted 6 months the first time.. and was 8 months this time.. apparently it lasts longer the more times you do it .. I guess it also depends how much they inject. Good luck!

Sillybillypoopoomummy · 26/02/2021 09:13

Where do you find the people who do it - is a dentist or a cosmetic surgery place??

Whenwillow · 26/02/2021 13:29

I wonder if you'd eventually break the habit after a few rounds of botox. That would be wonderful. I'm so sick of it, and I'm aware I'm doing it in the day now. I can handle the pain at the moment but I fear long term damage 😔

Kisskiss · 27/02/2021 11:09

Apparently the muscles train to relax with more rounds.. my back teeth were wearing out and the corner of one molar had even chipped and fallen off so hopefully it doesn’t progress..
I used a gp who does cosmetics injectables.. apparently if it goes into the wrong muscle it can affect your smile Shock

Whenwillow · 01/03/2021 14:09

Sorry, I've only just seen your reply @Kisskiss.
Thank you. That's interesting.

Beeeees · 01/03/2021 19:59

I had it from the NHS, it worked well but unfortunately my consultant was worried about the affect to the joint (I have hypermobility) so I wasn’t allowed to continue with it. It lasted about 3 months ish I think each time. I would have it again in a heartbeat, joints be damned 😂

The first time it was quite painful though, I can’t remember what it was like after that. Was many years ago now.

It was the local dental hospital’s pain clinic. They also made some of my splints, which were loads better than the ones my dentist bodged. I had to try many many things before they tried Botox though and I was the first patient they used it on.

I would recommend asking to be referred to a dental hospital, they are much better placed to deal with TMJ than a normal dentist. I wouldn’t have been able to afford all the treatment they gave me if I’d had to pay a dentist.

Following this with interest. I’m currently doing Invisalign to correct the movement of my teeth caused by grinding. Worse still, I grind front to back rather than side to side. This lead to a big chip between my two front teeth. I often wake up feeling like I’ve been punched between the eyes. Amazingly this is the first dentist who has even suggested a night guard and fixed the chip with composite and told me damage was due to the grinding - after numerous years and dentists telling me the state of my teeth was my fault. Think I’ll ask him about Botox.

Whenwillow · 03/03/2021 06:50

I can so relate to dentists telling me it's my fault! This thread has been very interesting. I tried a night without the guard last week and woke with extreme pain around my temples. If I sleep with the thing I tend to chomp on it and get pain more around my jaw. I'm building muscle there!
Solidarity to my fellow sufferers.
@RunningOnMusic How's it going?

RunningOnMusic · 18/03/2021 12:33

Hello all. Just to update: I am having my first dose of botox next Thursday at the dentist having seen the Bruxism expert in the practice today. It will cost £250. They also do facial botox I'll be getting that too for my frowns/11s. Will report back afterwards...

YouSetTheTone · 20/03/2021 09:53

Will be interested to hear your report back!
I grind my teeth and am going to get a mouth guard for it soon. Just recently I’ve started to get a sharp twinge sometimes when I smile - it runs from just behind my nostril into the gum line below that nostril. I’m wondering now if that sounds like it could be connected to grinding?
