Would anyone be interested in a chronic pain board?

Hi all,

I posted in Site Stuff but MN have recommended I post here. I've seen a couple of threads about this where MN have said they're "interested" in what's being said but nothing ever comes of it. Sometimes posts get lost here in general health and chronic pain / limited mobility doesn't come under "special needs". I thought it would be good if we had a specific board.

Would anyone be interested if MN set up a board specific to chronic pain (or similar if anyone has any alternative suggestions?

Yes

Navilana · 26/02/2021 19:31

need to read up! Happy Friday Evenin' indeed Smile

@MNHQ I know it's Friday, but you could help us out so much by just giving an update! Don't leave us hanging Sad

@Akire GinWine[Baileys][beer][soda] Grin

Genehuntsfanclub and FilledSoda and satbythepoolside a warm, fuzzy welcome from me too!

@MrsAvocet That is so lovely to read! Please yes, do feel proud, I'm very happy that the organisation you volunteer for values every input you may have Smile

@DunravenBadger may I ask what you're studying? Regardless, a nice evening wished to you Star

@Ouchwtfthistime Thank you for starting the AIBU Star

Could I ask what TAAT means? And does everyone see the smileys put on via the phone keyboard (like 😍❄️🎉), or are we really limited to the very sparse smileys from MN itself Hmm?

MedusasBadHairDay · 26/02/2021 20:12

With the YABU views I think people just like to be contrary honestly

Akire · 26/02/2021 20:15

TAAT is a thread about a thread- often frowned about on mumsnet For lots of reasons!

It’s great we can get the discussion going I’ve got about 5 threads I’ve been saving up to ask but I know general Heath bearly get any replies.

MedusasBadHairDay · 26/02/2021 20:29

@Akire

Hopefully helps nudge MNHQ we have lots of other hardy used ones. Or we start every thread we would like to start under genera health board as chronic pain XXX
If AIBU doesn't work that might be an idea, though I'd be concerned that'd make them say, "see you can just use general health".
Navilana · 26/02/2021 21:55

Weird how many things I'd already bookmarked years ago, eg. to try and explain to others what pain really feels like, every day. It wouldn't be right for MNHQ to refuse point blank and actually force us to disperse to other threads, or even forums.
Especially knowing that illnesses seem to link to / handshake other illnesses sometimes, so we'd never really fit in. Different threads on a separate board would solve that.

And why doesn't the longrunning Cancer thread have an appointed board, actually?!

MedusasBadHairDay · 26/02/2021 22:07

The way I see it, if they can have an entire board for Streamed TV and a board for Telly Addicts, they can also have a Chronic Pain board distinct from the General Health board.

maz210 · 26/02/2021 23:07

Yes, definitely! Disabled by chronic back/leg pain caused by Ehlers Danlos syndrome, spinal osteoarthritis and degenerative disc disease. Would be lovely to have somewhere here for/to support people in the same boat.

Please, Mumsnet?

Akire · 26/02/2021 23:22

People don’t understand if you have one chronic illness the odds of another are quite high. Can’t remember the actual stats. Or as if one pain condition means you are used to
It. When in reality of anything your tolerance gets more and more stretched.

Anyone could have a tooth out with no painkillers. Having one out every day would not make it one bit easier.

Namechange600 · 26/02/2021 23:28

Just coming back on to say yes please (again!)
I have endo, adeno, pcos, and most recently diagnosed with pots, likely Heds/Mcas
I have pain of one sort or another most days.
I feel like I am collecting chronic health diagnoses at the moment!
Hardly anyone understands it, even close family members. Makes it hard to get it off your chest.

DunravenBadger · 27/02/2021 07:34

@Navilana I'm studying healthcare science. It's honestly the most intense course I've ever done but I'm mostly enjoying it, it's just extra intense when I'm having pain flare ups.

I agree with @MedusasBadHairDay that MN might just say use General Health in that case.

@MNHQ see we really do need a board. Between this and the AIBU thread, there are a lot of us.

Yes please.
I'm waiting again for a pain management course.
First two times I got to the top of the list to be told my mental health wasn't up to it 🙄

anormalperson · 27/02/2021 07:51

I interested too , psoriatic arthritis here and an absolute bastard at the minute . Hey everyone

DunravenBadger · 27/02/2021 07:58

That's so rubbish @Furrybutts! I do hope they let you do it this time. I'm still on the waiting list to meet the pain referral team. How long have you been waiting? It's been about 4/5 months for me so far.

Welcome @anormalperson

Yes to everyone thinks someone else is over seeing care when nobody is. That someone else has done very basic Checks or blood tests when no one has. That the pain you have been complaining about has been recorded someone when you mention it for years and it’s just ignored.

TheLaughingGenome · 27/02/2021 18:54

@MrsAvocet

I'm feeling proud of myself today. I'm Volunteer of the Month for the organisation I do some voluntary work for. Which would always be nice, but especially as I've not had a great month pain wise I'm really pleased to be recognised. There's no prize or anything, just a mention in despatches type of thing, but it's nice to feel valued, despite my limitations.
That's brilliant 👍
SingToTheSky · 27/02/2021 19:04

That’s so great mrsA :) I am starting training for a (mostly from home) volunteer role next month and I’m excited, hoping it will give me a sense of myself again that I lost when I stopped work. Really brilliant to have your work recognised, congratulations! 😍

DunravenBadger · 01/03/2021 06:14

Hope the training goes well @SingToTheSky.

How was everyone's weekend? It's been quite sunny here, not very warm though. I really hope it warms up soon.

Thanks badger :)
My weekend was sore - covid jab on Saturday has definitely made itself felt 😁 but the muscle aches aren’t that different to normal tbh 😂

Same weather here, I’ve managed without a coat but it’s surprisingly chilly in the shade and the breeze is biting!

MedusasBadHairDay · 01/03/2021 08:19

I overdid it this weekend. We're planning on moving later in the year, and made the decision to start decluttering now in preparation. The logic being that doing it little by little means I can pace myself.

Problem is I'm still no good at pacing myself, so struggling today.

PinkPlantCase · 01/03/2021 08:23

@MedusasBadHairDay I also over did it this weekend. We were doing some jobs in the garden, we figured putting some gravel in a bucket was a job I could do. It was hilarious that after a day of my DH digging and moving massive slabs it was me who was in masses of pain because my wrist was upset from using a trowl.

I was much bet on Sunday at asking for help. I planted seeds but everything soil/lifting related was fine by someone else. DH doesn’t mind, it annoying that I always feel so silly for asking

dementedma · 01/03/2021 08:41

Yep, DH is always telling me off for not letting him do more. But I really hate having to sit back and just watch other people do the work.

I still struggle with no longer being physically capable, I used to enjoy surprising people who saw a tiny 4ft 10 woman and assumed weakness - eg. I used to work in a minilab and we used to have to lug waste products from the lab downstairs to the stock room upstairs, the amount of men who would gallantly offer to help then struggle with one container while I carried two at a time used to make my little feminist heart happy.

Now people look at me and assume weakness - and they're right. And I hate it.

PinkPlantCase · 01/03/2021 12:39

@MedusasBadHairDay I feel the same. I can’t really carry rucksacks or bags so DH carries everything. Which again he doesn’t mind at all, he knows that him doing the carrying it means I can still do the activity.

But as you say it makes my inner feminist sad. Same goes for doors, why do some doors have to be so bloody heavy!

I really like wfh I get to live in a bubble where I’m rarely reminded that there’s stuff I can’t do

Wfh has been amazing for me. I can do gentle exercises by my desk without feeling self conscious. And I don't have to ask for concessions so I can join in, eg. not being able to do walking meetings/ stand ups.
