Constant urge to pee!

GrapefruitGin · 07/02/2021 10:27

Hi all, hoping someone has some advice. Few weeks of cystitis symptoms, called dr last week and was prescribed a three day course of antibiotics. Finished course two days ago and this morning I’ve woken up with worse symptoms than before! I’ve been sitting on the toilet basically since I woke up with a feeling of deep pressure on my bladder and the constant urge to pee. I’ve taken two paracetamol but can anyone else recommend anything to relieve the feeling of constantly needing to pee (when I say constant, I literally mean that. I’ll get off the loo and 5-10 mins later I’m back in the bathroom again). Please help someone!!! Oh and yes I’ll be contacting the drs again as soon as they open. TIA!

I take cysto puren available over the counter at the pharmacy, loads of water of course & back to the doc. A warm Epsom salt bath may also help. You have my sympathies, it’s a horrible thing

GrapefruitGin · 07/02/2021 10:35

Thank you for your reply. A bath would be lovely but I worry it’ll make things worse. Thank you for the recommendation, I’ll see if I can get my hands on it today.

Are you actually weeing when you go? I get this now and again and I force myself to drink a lot of water so that when I'm actually feeling the need to wee, I go to the loo and can wee. I cannot stand having the feeling but not actually weeing. I tend to find if I do this for a few hours, it gets much better. Also maybe try ibuprofen as it's anti inflammatory.

(Obviously not a dr, just letting you know my experience)

GrapefruitGin · 07/02/2021 10:40

@Crimblecrumble1990 not really to be honest, sort of dribbles (sorry!) and it burns. Yes I need to force myself to drink lots, thank you.

A warm bath won’t make it worse if you don’t include any soaps or shower gels. You do need to drink as much water as you can to help flush out the bacteria.

picklemewalnuts · 07/02/2021 10:47

Also, how old are you? Menopause related Vaginal atrophy makes me feel I need to pee constantly. Ovestin cream sorts it out.

GrapefruitGin · 07/02/2021 10:50

Thank you for that @MadamBatty, a warm bath sounds heavenly.

@picklemewalnuts I’m late 20s

Sorry not really any advice on what you can take, although have you tried the over-the-counter cystitis relief they sell in chemists?
My UTIs don't go away with 3 days of antibiotics. I've had 2 stubborn ones (different years) and had to have a second longer course both times. Last time was 7 days and that worked. You probably need a longer course too. I also took D-Mannose after I finished my antibiotics. So far haven't had the UTI back.

GrapefruitGin · 07/02/2021 10:58

@Trinacham thank you, yes I tried the sachets before I called the drs for antibiotics. I’ve sent DH out to get me some more. I’m hoping it is a case of needing a longer course of antibiotics and nothing sinister. I’m so uncomfortable! I just got off the loo to go and lay down but before I’d got to my bed I needed to come back to the loo again, awful.

I’ve just started to pass blood now too

You may be on the wrong antibiotics op. I have had a UTI which is resistant to some antibiotics. You need to try different ones.

It is so painful! When I got it I found I had to drink a fuck tonne of water. Take ibuprofen and paracetamol at the same time if you can. They work better together.

HenriettaHeffalump · 07/02/2021 11:04

Showers are better than baths as well apparently. A nurse told me baths can push water the wrong way iyswim.

HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 07/02/2021 11:22

Cranberry juice or tablets!! Cranberry flushed three bacteria out of the bladder and urethra.

PumpkinSpicedLatte · 07/02/2021 11:25

I’d go to the walk in centre if you are passing blood , OP. You have my sympathies . I had this a few weeks ago and it’s a horrible feeling .

picklemewalnuts · 07/02/2021 11:32

Oh that hurts! I used to get it a lot. We used to keep mispotsit in, whatever that is. It's a vile sour liquid...

Drink loads, pour water over yourself while you pee to help the stinging. Take paracetamol.

If it doesn't ease in a few hours, go to the out of hours/whatever you have in your area.

Bobbiepin · 07/02/2021 11:38

There is little research evidence to suggest cranberry and the sachets are effective other than as a placebo effect. You need stronger and longer antibiotics and lots and lots of water. Get abx asap or you're risking kidney infection. If you can, get a sample of urine ready for drs to test, will speed the process up.

GrapefruitGin · 07/02/2021 12:00

I ended up contacting 111, feel slightly dramatic about it now but the blood concerned me. They were amazing and very quickly suggested that I wasn’t prescribed a long enough course of antibiotics so have prescribed a 7 day course which is ready to be collected from my local boots now. I feel a bit better now I’ve guzzled a load of cranberry juice and taken some pain relief. Thank you for all your advice, it’s been reassuring.

Drink as much as you can bear! I find I can stave it off by starting this early enough

GrapefruitGin · 07/02/2021 12:06

Thanks @omg35, I’m terrible normally and can go hours and hours without drinking anything... trying to force it down me.

Your update beat me to it. Drives me insane that they prescribe 3 days for a UTI when it nearly always needs 7, so you end up with 10 and more agony in between. I don't know anybody that 3 days has ever worked for.

Hope this works for you.

kissmelittleass · 07/02/2021 21:17

Hi op just seeing your post you have my sympathy poor you it's awful but I'm so glad you rang for help and got antibiotics.
I was on a three day course of antibiotics last October for a uti, I finished the course and didn't feel great, of course it was a weekend and thought I'd wait until the Monday to ring the doctor but I slowly got worse and pain started in my side, I was literally crying in pain.
That night I managed to sleep for about an hour and woke up having a fit, the shivers nonstop the lot! Very scary!
Admitted to A&E after being checked by a doctor and ended up in hospital for 2.5 weeks!!!
Just had another uti a few weeks ago and got a five day course this time and recovered so three day courses are not enough!! At the hospital I asked if I'd had a longer course would I of been ok and he nodded his head.
Hope you feel better soon op that urge to constantly wee and pressure is the worst pain I've had it's brutal.

TheLeaRig · 07/02/2021 21:22

This 3 day courses stuff is nonsense.

The guy who invented penicillin actually wrote about the dangers of too short courses.

I had an infection which went chronic. Some specialists believe infection is the cause of interstitial cystitis, which is a horribly painful condition. I wish I'd been given a longer course.

We should campaign for 7 day courses.

You did the right thing OP. I hope you feel better soon.

Mummyofbananas · 08/02/2021 10:58

a cup of warm water can really help with the stinging too- or a tsp of bicarbonate of soda in some water x

MadamBatty · 08/02/2021 11:32

I hope you’re ok Grape & got some sleep

Maria1982 · 08/02/2021 21:41

Glad to hear you got a 7-day course! Carry on drinking loads of water (and regular pain relief) and hopefully in a couple of days you will feel better.

I too am cross at the handing out of 3 day antibiotics courses! They never work.
I also have had chronic bladder issues in the past after unresolved UTIs, which was really not fun.
