Anyone have hip bursitis and groin pain? Did it get better?

Hi all,

I'm going to see a specialist at the end of the week which I can't wait for, but I'm feeling so down about the pain I'm in!

I've had hip bursitis for a long time probably 3 years? Maybe more. It's my fault, I haven't treated it properly as it would get better and disappear for a few months, come back and do the same again.

I have two kids under 3 and had them in quick succession during the pregnancies I had SPD and I did physio and saw an osteopath. After the kids were born my hips got better.

In July last year I had an online physiotherapist appt because I started getting sharp pains in my groin (mainly left side, but can be both) be gave me exercises to do and told me that I just need to "push through the pain and keep doing them" but I just couldn't. It's too painful!

What's making it worse is all the repetitive movements I have to do with two young kids and housework. I'm at the stage now where the last two days the kids have just watched tv mostly as I can't weight bear on my left leg without pain :(

This is really getting me down, I'm only 33. Is this it for me? It sounds so dramatic but it's been such a long time now...I can't carry the kids for too long or chase after them etc

Should I ask for a steroid injection would that help with the pain and enable me to do the exercises?

Some positive stories would really help!

Bumping with a sad face!

I forgot to mention that I have been taking Ibuprofen / paracetamol but they don't really help.
Yesterday I found some Naproxen 250mg so I've taken those and they help for a couple of hours and then the stabbing pain comes back!

@Groinpainruiningmylife This sounds like impingement (FAI). Physio won’t fix it although will be very important after surgery. Sadly you aren’t too young - I had to have this surgery in my 20s. You need an MRI in the first instance and a referral to orthopaedics.

Groinpainruiningmylife · 05/02/2021 08:39

@CausingChaos2 thank you for your reply.
I'm seeing the consultant today so hopefully I'll have more of an idea what he thinks it could be.

I'm going private for this, so I'm hoping for some answers!

I'll come back to update you. I'm just doing some reading on FAI so thank you for mentioning that.

No worries and look forward to your update. I hope today goes well. Smile

Groinpainruiningmylife · 05/02/2021 14:12

@CausingChaos2 Hey,
So he reckons hip bursitis both sides which is causing my groin pain. I'm going for an MRI on Tuesday on my lower back and hips x

Ouch, I had it mildly in one hip, MRI to confirm and physio to treat. Steroid injection recommended if that didn't help but I've not felt the need, currently in my third trimester and its holding up OK. Hope you can get a clear plan after your scan Flowers

PatchworkElmer · 05/02/2021 14:21

This is very timely OP- I’ve been told that I have it (from running) and my goodness it hurts! The pain seems to be going into my lower back today. Really hope you’re able to get it sorted.

KosmoKramer · 05/02/2021 14:22

I have hip bursitis at the moment. It's really hurting. I've had two steroid injections and developed Achilles issues too...no idea if there is a connection. I need to do my exercises properly as I've been neglecting them.

Groinpainruiningmylife · 05/02/2021 14:48

@Parkandride Glad you're doing ok and that your bursitis was mild and the physio helped!

When he was checking me over he pressed either side of my hip and lower back and it's so bloody painful! (Although I am a wuss with pain I really can't take it!) since getting home I now can't walk without a shooting pain in my groin on the left side. He recommended ointment Ibuprofen so I'm trying that as I got the impression he doesn't like me taking the Nepraxon!

I woke up fine this morning, then did a ten min walk to the shop and back and that was me ruined for the day! I'm grateful for the weekend as my DH can take the kids out and have fun with them.

Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy :) x

@PatchworkElmer Have you had any tests /physio etc? I hope you're able to rest and that you feel better soon...it really is awful.

Groinpainruiningmylife · 05/02/2021 14:52

@KosmoKramer Have the steroid injections not helped? I'm kinda pinning my life on them!
I'm hoping that once I get the steroid injections I'll be able to do the physio as I won't be in pain....?

It's so easy to neglect the physio exercises! I hope your Achilles gets better soon x

I had bilateral trochenteric (?) Bursitis, for 2.5 years. Had steroid injections and prescribed zapain. It cleared up suddenly after 2 5 years, to be replaced with sciatica in my right leg. Although now I've lost 5 stone, that's sorted now too. I was in almost constant pain for 6 years, so you have my sympathy. The steroid injections helped, but they don't work for everyone.

Groinpainruiningmylife · 05/02/2021 15:01

@Catnuzzle oh gosh! That sounds like so much to go through :( it's great that you're better now!

Did you do physio? What are the steroid injections like to have ? (Do they hurt?)

OP posts:
PatchworkElmer · 05/02/2021 15:24

@Groinpainruiningmylife yes I’ve seen my normal physio who seems confident it’s bursitis and should self resolve. I’m really not sure though. It doesn’t seem to be shifting!!

Catnuzzle · 06/02/2021 16:14

I did have physio, but it was the weight loss that really helped. The steroid injections were midly uncomfortable, but worth it!

Groinpainruiningmylife · 06/02/2021 17:32

@Catnuzzle Admittedly I am heavier at the moment, but I have been this weight since august. I've lost a kilo this week, probably from not being able to get to the fridge 😂.

I am working on my weight loss in general, very aware that it won't help my hips! I'm about a stone overweight.

I'm feeling very down and emotional today. I can't walk more then 5 steps without getting a stabbing pain in my groin. Just had a good cry on DH's shoulder. :(

I had terrible hip bursitis. I can honestly say is started to clear up when a private physio loaned me crutches. That isn't much use for you but really you need to give it some proper rest.

Groinpainruiningmylife · 06/02/2021 18:24

@FoxInSocks2 How long were you on crutches for before you felt better?

OP posts:
NotquitewhatImeant · 08/02/2021 18:17

Everything @CausingChaos2 said. I had the same in my 20s, the MRI should show. Also had terrible spd in pregnancy. Steroid injections definitely help but if the underlying cause is impingement then you may need that corrected.

Groinpainruiningmylife · 08/02/2021 19:40

@NotquitewhatImeant Thank you, i wonder if I can have both?!
I rested all weekend and I've been so much better today, but it took 4 days 😩. MRI tomorrow evening so I will let you all know once I have the results!

Thank you everyone who's responded so far I realty do appreciate it so much!

I've been old by a physiotherapist that my hip pain is bursitis. I've not been great doing the exercises but I must start again as pain is quite bad. Especially at night on my right hip. Should I rest it or what

Groinpainruiningmylife · 08/02/2021 20:27

@mummagirl Definitely rest it if you can, take ibuprofen and try not to lie on the affected side.

Do your physio if it's not too painful to do so. X

Hi OP, I also used to have a combination of severe bursitis and groin pain (plus burning pain on the front hip bone) and likewise had SPD in pregnancy. I'm now free of it and there were three key things that helped:

First, gradually strengthening and stretching all the major muscles in my lower back, stomach/core and legs. This, strangely, was a tip from a young instructor of about 19 at my gym who saw me struggling and asked what was wrong. He reasoned that would help most to strengthen and loosen all the major core muscles so as to realign the pelvic area and gently "offload" the pubic and hip joints. (He basically saw the bursitis and groin pain as symptoms of residual general muscle imbalance from pregnancy.) This worked brilliantly for me. Until then, I'd been struggling with highly specific physio and pilates type exercises and they were just too painful to do. Slowly strengthening the bigger muscles worked absolute wonders.

Second, using a tennis ball (or hard foam ball) to massage the muscles in my lower back and buttocks. This basically involved "rolling" the ball between my body and a wall, using as much pressure as I could bear. I won't lie, this was really quite painful at first - especially in the buttock area - but the eventual relief from the general hip pain was well worth it. (Note: I didn't directly massage the area where the bursae were - think I would have passed out with pain then!) I was actually quite shocked by how tight these muscles were. It was no wonder my hips were completely askew.

Third, I had my doctor give me a strong anti-inflammatory. I can't remember what it was called but I took it for about a week and it definitely took the edge off the bursitis and stabbing pain when I most needed it!

All the best. It's a horrible problem. So painful. xxx

Haven't read all through the thread as would like to add my experience.I am older but always been active and tough as old nails.About 5 years ago I started to have a sharp pain in the middle of bum cheek.Carried on exercising as thought it the right thing to do.The pain then moved to groin (where you'd put your hand in jeans pocket at the front). Then it'd go down leg.Come and go,but I eventually I noticed it got worse after exercise (inflamed obvious now..).
Walking, exercise then phisio...until therapist told me to have an X-ray. Mystery solved.Hip.Worn down cartilage then bone rubbing on bone.Used to be like a shock.New hip problem solved.Sorry I waffled.

fataroundthemiddle · 09/02/2021 20:19

Dentistscat..just read your post.Shall look into that.Other hip has started..maybe I can help myself before I need another operation. Thanks
