Hope he is ok, when did he last go, is he on any medication, is he able to eat and drink ok, any vomiting.

bigbird1969 · 20/01/2021 18:24

My mum bowel cancer was very constipated and in pain and she was diagnosed with bowel cancer. Caught early and she has been cancer free for ten years. If your DH is usually regular and he is suddenly in pain and constipated he should go and see his GP. Any sudden changes require checking out

MagnoliatheMagnificent · 20/01/2021 18:28

Ok. DH (73) usually has no bowel issues. For the last 2 weeks he has been having to strain to pass stools. Since Sunday he has not passed any other than a tiny amount of semi-liquid on wiping. He is experiencing intense pain around his rectum and frequent intervals (often every 10 mins). D/W GP yesterday who prescribed senna and Laxido which he has taken but still no result. Had some blood tests yesterday but no results as yet. We are worried re possible obstruction but the symptoms don't quite fit. There is a family history of bowel cancer so we are anxious about that too. Any ideas?

He is eating and drinking small amounts. The Laxido has been mixed up in a litre of water which he has drunk (both days now). He is crying out in pain at times which is unlike him.

I think he needs to go the hospital op.

My neighbour was like this a few weeks ago and he needed an operation on his bowel.

If he is not passing stools it's staying inside him which I think may be able to cause blood poisoning.

I'm not sure I'm going off what my neighbor said a few weeks ago.

I'd ring NHS direct tonight.

Hope he's ok.

WTAFIhavelosttheferret · 20/01/2021 18:40

Has he tried to go in a deep hot bath? Take paracetamol and try and go into the water.

I find sugar free (laxative) sweets such as ricola or M&S have some much better than lactulose (is Laxio the same)

WTAFIhavelosttheferret · 20/01/2021 18:44

Just looked at Laxido- that is useless my DH was prescribed it when he was having radio/chemo and it didnt work.

MagnoliatheMagnificent · 20/01/2021 18:45

I called 111 Monday eve and they said contact GP in the morning which we did. She wasn't overly bothered but he has now taken quite a lot of medicine with no passing of stools as yet. Not passing that much urine either.. is alert, no high temp, small amount of bloating only, passing small amounts of wind so not completely blocked up.

YesMeLady · 20/01/2021 18:59

I would seek medical advice as he hadnt pooped for 4 days, is passing little urine and is in pain. Suppositories and lactulose and prunes worked for us. If he is eating and drinking very little then nothing will shift and everything will be harder to pass.

Sexnotgender · 20/01/2021 19:06

Is laxido the same as lactulose? If so it’s rubbish. Something like movicol is better.

mineofuselessinformation · 20/01/2021 19:08

Sounds like he needs to tackle it at the other end?
Glycerin suppositories or picosulfate (I think) enema - you can get both at a pharmacy.

Twixmas · 20/01/2021 19:09

Constipation can be absolutely awful and so it doesn't have to indicate the worst, but yes get him seen again soon. You're right to be vigilant x

ChablisandCrisps · 20/01/2021 19:12

I second picosulphate, drinking more Laxido is pointless,, he will just end up bloated and crampy. Suppositories will get things moving and provide some relief but a change in bowel habits, especially if urination is also being effected needs looking at.

NinetyNineRedBalloonsGoBy · 20/01/2021 19:13

This happened to my Dad, same age. His GP also did what yours has - gave him some strong laxatives and ordered blood tests. Thank god my mum phoned an ambulance that night as he was in so much pain, they took him in and it was a perforated bowel caused by an obstruction. Emergency surgery that night saved his life. Call 999 OP x

YesMeLady · 20/01/2021 19:14

I think laxido and movicol are the same, lactulose is a thick sugary syrup that softens poo, different laxatives work in different ways.

CottonSock · 20/01/2021 19:15

Has the gp actually seen and examined him? I would call again.

CottonSock · 20/01/2021 19:18

Laxido is a brand, movicol is also a brand, both the same (macragols). They are gentle and work by adding water to poo. So not a sudden cure. Sodium picosulphate is a bowel stimulant. We were advised (different issue, for a child) to soften stools with a macragol before using sodium picosulphate. I'd probably try glycerine. Can you get to a late pharmacy?

CottonSock · 20/01/2021 19:19

Sorry I mistyped on autocorrect, it's macrogol.

Sarahandco · 20/01/2021 19:29

glycerine suppositories are definitely worth a try - from chemist or supermarket with a pharmacy.

GameSetMatch · 20/01/2021 19:34

Go to the chemist and buy some suppositories, they are glycerin so nothing that will harm you but they work a treat.
