so why do both me and my mum keep feeling like we need to go to the loo but nothing comes out which to me sounds like a UTI. is there anything else it could be?

no

if you keep feeling this see your GP.

it may not be a UTI at all.

you may have, say, an overactive bladder.

Neverenoughpumpkins · 28/10/2007 00:30

Yes lots of reasons, most resolve by themselves. Drink plenty of fluids. UTIs are not contagious.

I thought cystitis could be? I may have imagined that though.

Speaking of which, I have developed that this evening. It's pretty awful, actually

Neverenoughpumpkins · 28/10/2007 01:06

Lol sKerryMum! Where's the orgy????
Yes you can have infection or inflammation in the urinary tract which is from the vagina up to the kidney, though usually lower urinary tract from the bladder(cystitis ) down is the culprit.
being peri or postmenopausal can cause a whole host of urinary symptoms also.
So different causes at different ages with lots of overlap.

nappyaddict · 28/10/2007 01:08

i've had a mini period the last 2 days (forgot to take my pill) could that be the cause?

OP posts:
Neverenoughpumpkins · 28/10/2007 01:10

VVVqV, cystitis (bacterial) is not infectious but is related to sexual frequency-hence the old name of "honeymoon cystitis"-UTI caused literally by lots of sex , causing bacteria to be pushed up into the bladder via the short urethra which then multiply quickly-et voila,a UTI.

There are some sexually transmitted causes of dysuria(pain or discomfort sometimes with frequency)on passing urine. We don't call these a UTI though.

Medicine-I love it!

nappyaddict · 28/10/2007 01:12

i used to have an overactive bladder when i was younger. they were going to stretch my bladder but it got better in time so they never bothered. could it have come back? surely it would have made sense for it to come back when i had my ds though not 16 months later

and still doesn't explain my mum having the same thing. and no i haven't been having sex with my mum!!

OP posts:
Neverenoughpumpkins · 28/10/2007 01:12

nappyaddict, I would hesitate to say yes. Wait and see and if it's bad, see your GP. Don't forget your pill may mot work if you've missed two. Read the leaflet.
Sorry will stop being bossy now.

nappyaddict · 28/10/2007 01:14

sorry did we xpost. was the yes to the mini period? it's ok about the pill i'm not getting any atm!! i always find i get a bit lax when i don't really need to be taking it.

Neverenoughpumpkins · 28/10/2007 01:16

Hmm, overactive bladder in a child is different than in an adult-keep an open mid-it will probably go if you drink lots of fluids!

nappyaddict · 28/10/2007 01:18

so i might not need to see doc?

i HATE going to the doctors i'm a scaredy cat!

my friend said if i don't go it will only get worse and won't go away by itself so i should go sooner than later.

OP posts:
Neverenoughpumpkins · 28/10/2007 01:18

x again! Yes it's probably not the withdrawal bleed causing your frequency!

nappyaddict · 28/10/2007 01:19

oh also i am only 19 so whens the crossover for overactive bladder being diff in a child to an adult lol.

OP posts:
Neverenoughpumpkins · 28/10/2007 01:20

You might not need to see scarey doc! Only you know how bad it is and whether you can wait and see. If you are passing blood though I'd go sooner rather than later!
Although if you have been at risk of a STI lately, probably worth having a test for chlamydia(sorry delicate subject but am not known for tippytoes approach)

Neverenoughpumpkins · 28/10/2007 01:21

Definitely adult at 19 nappyaddict!

nappyaddict · 28/10/2007 01:27

damn i so wanted to still be a child!

nope doubtful of the chlamydia (duno if i spelt that right). have had sex without use of a condom but i was only the 3rd sexual partner my ex had had and the other 2 had been virgins so pretty safe there. unless he lied

OP posts:
Neverenoughpumpkins · 28/10/2007 01:31

Or they did, nappyaddict

Always always assume the worst! Protect yourself no matter what!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 28/10/2007 01:34

Ah yes....well, honeymoon cystitis two weeks early then

nappyaddict · 28/10/2007 01:37

tbh i don't think they or he would lie. i don't normally have unprotected sex btw, i did with him cos i was friends with him a while before and knew of his history. call it my own little risk assessment

OP posts:
Neverenoughpumpkins · 28/10/2007 01:45

Fair enough will not labour the point Nappyaddict!

VVVQV hope it gets better-like peeing razor blades innit?

VeniVidiVickiQV · 28/10/2007 01:46

Very much so. Very pink wee too.

Have taken paracetamol and ibuprofen. Will go to bed now I think.

gibberish · 28/10/2007 01:51

VVV much sympathy with the cystitis - is agony. Wouldn't wish it on my enemy.

nappyaddict. can you take a sample and see a nurse at your surgery? No need to see a doc then - they can test it there and then for UTI.

Do you have pain?

Neverenoughpumpkins · 28/10/2007 01:52

VVVQV-dissolve a teaspoon of bicarb soda dissolved in a pint of tepid water-you can flavour it with whatever if you like. Drink a glass or tow-it makes the urine less alkaline and that makes it sting less. it's essentially what's in commercial sachets such as cystemme etc.
Goodnight

SatanGeorge · 28/10/2007 01:53

gibberish, I just read that as 'wouldn't wish it on my enema'. Was about to say wrong hole love.

Think I need to go to bed.
