Major weight loss in DD

emilytankengine · 27/10/2007 21:55

DD has been a bit out of sorts lately, generally unwell, listless etc. V pale and looking pinched. Put her on the scales before and she has lost over a stone in weight. What could be wrong?

how old is she????

emilytankengine · 27/10/2007 21:56

She's 9

jalopy · 27/10/2007 22:09

I'd get her checked with GP.

popsycal · 27/10/2007 22:15

agree with jalopy

CarGirl · 27/10/2007 22:16

ruled out something simple like worms?

emilytankengine · 27/10/2007 22:26

Worms? WOuld that make her lose weight? I'll be so relieved if it's as simple as that. What other symptoms would she have?

OP posts:
CarGirl · 27/10/2007 22:28

if it's thread worms an itchy bottom at night. If it's tape worms I have no idea

DoctorAficionadoDelArse · 27/10/2007 22:29

Is she, or was she overweight before? Has she been eating a more healthy diet than previously? Have you looked at her weight/height on a centile chart?

Millarkie · 27/10/2007 23:28

Anaemia can cause lack of appetite which would fit with pale and weight loss.....but of course, take her to your GP for a check up!

CarGirl · 28/10/2007 09:49

yes anaemia makes you feel absolutely awful is she sleeping more/wanting to lie down? Yes absolutely take her to the drs but it could be something quite simple.

emilytankengine · 28/10/2007 10:54

Definitely sleeping more, saying she's too tired for brownies etc. She's never been overweight and no change to diet. If anything she's been eating well. She wet the bed last night this is all very worrying

OP posts:
CarGirl · 28/10/2007 13:01

no excessive thirst - that could indicate diabetes which also can make you v v tired in the early stages.

paddyclamp · 28/10/2007 13:24

Agree with CarGirl. I was diagnosed diabetic when i was 9. I was tired, started wetting bed and was very very thirsty. Not sure whether i might have gone off my food. I had dizzy spells and blackouts too.

emilytankengine · 28/10/2007 20:30

OMG she has been drinking a fair bit, saying her throat is dry. It can't be diabetes can it? Should i take her to a and e? If it is how long before she could go into a coma?

OP posts:
CarGirl · 28/10/2007 20:49

has she been wee'ing more??? If so I would take her to A&E if it's fairly local only because I would assume that is where they would test her anyway - ie a hospital not at the drs. I don't think coma is likely as it is probably very mild otherwise she would have lots of other symptoms too?

Sorry if I've panicked you, it could be just an annoying virus.

jalopy · 28/10/2007 20:53

Emily, how does she seem to you today?

GrumpyWomenRuleOK · 28/10/2007 21:08

Think you may already be there but I also think you should get her checked at A&E where they can measure her sugar levels quickly. Let us know how she is, poor thing.

emilytankengine · 28/10/2007 21:23

Almost like she has a flu bug, just generally unwell. She's sleeping a lot and is having plenty to drink. Trouble is i have 2 younger kids who are in bed and i'm on my own. She's asleep in my bed as she wet her own last night so i'll be able too keep an eye on her. I will phone the doctor at first thing tomorrow

OP posts:
paddyclamp · 28/10/2007 21:31

Emily don't panic at this. I did go into a coma when I as first diagnosed but I had been showing severe symptoms for almost 2 weeks before that happened and the doctors cocked up because they didn't check my blood sugar levels on 3 trips to the GP! It's the drinking that I remember being the most pronounced symptom by the way

CarGirl · 28/10/2007 21:33

my friend said it was the constant drinking & weeing that made her realise that her dd was ill. The other child I know who developed it had been out of sorts for months and months but they were a family who constantly snacked so the more obvious symptoms never developed - and in their case the dr seriously f*cked up too - he had mum down as neurotic!

paddyclamp · 28/10/2007 21:42

If she starts to smell of pear drops take her to A and E as that's a sign of DKA. Demand that they test for diabetes

neolara · 28/10/2007 21:47

My friend was recently diagnosed with diabetes and the GP gave her a diagnosis at his surgery by doing a simple blood test. She definitely didn't have to go to A & E. She had been losing weight over the course of about a month I think before she went to the doctors.

jalopy · 29/10/2007 09:51

Hope you manage to get a GP appointment today, emily.

emilytankengine · 29/10/2007 15:32

Took her to our GP who looked in her ears and throat and thinks she has a virus! I am really not convinced at all. When I mentioned diabetes he poo-poohed the idea completely but didn't do any tests. Thinking of phoning NHS direct. She's no better at all and keeps wanting water because her throat is dry

OP posts:
CarGirl · 29/10/2007 15:54

most of the pharmacists around here do diabetes testing, I'd be tempted just to do to a walk in centre or A&E and omitt mentioning you've already been to the gp.
