Major weight loss in DD

emilytankengine · 27/10/2007 21:55

DD has been a bit out of sorts lately, generally unwell, listless etc. V pale and looking pinched. Put her on the scales before and she has lost over a stone in weight. What could be wrong?

What about her significant weight loss?

paddyclamp · 29/10/2007 22:48

What sort of virus makes you lose all that weight?! Stupid doctor. Did he do a finger prick / urine test?

GrumpyWomenRuleOK · 30/10/2007 20:39

He didn't do any tests despite a stone weight loss in a child! - was able to dismiss the possibility on sight? . My diabetic brother nearly DIED because a GP dismissed my mother as neurotic on three separate visits, and because he had severe sugar induced coma when finally admitted his kidneys have been damaged ever since. Emily, I have no idea if your dd has diabetes or not, but I do think you should get another opinion if she is no better after this long.

emilytankengine · 31/10/2007 18:20

Not good. DD started being sick on Monday night and was difficult to wake. Took her to A and E and found she had ketones and glucose in her urine and she is diabetic. Her BM was 29. Is that as bad as yours was Paddy?

I'm still in shock and scared that I could have lost her and all thanks to that GP treating me as neurotic

Oh gosh
I am so pleased that you have got to the bottom of this though.

Thinking of you and dd

LadyVictoriaOfCake · 31/10/2007 18:25

oh emily

i think when you have got over this a bit, you need to make a complaint about your GP>

jalopy · 31/10/2007 18:39

Have to say, I was alarmed to read her loss of weight.

Hopefully she will feel alot better when they stabilise her sugar level.

Poor thing. Must have been so stressful, emily.

bodycolder · 31/10/2007 18:47

thank god you didn't listen to the gp What an irresponsinle fool.Hope she feels better soon xx

marchbunny · 31/10/2007 19:29

Dear Emily

Really hope your daughter is feeling a little better - just wanted to post and wish you all the best. Well done for trusting your instincts, it must be a relief to get an answer.

Am disgusted, (yet not surprised) by your GP's diagnosis of a virus (why do they always say this!)

Hope things progress well, and you and your daughter are coping. x

CarGirl · 31/10/2007 19:34

I really can't believe he ignored the symptoms despite you actually mentioning diabetes, please do complain.

I'm glad that you've got to the bottom of it and very soon she will be feeling much better. I know there are some really got web based support sites around as friends use them.

So sorry that she got so ill before you got a diagnosis, it must have been very scarey.

paddyclamp · 31/10/2007 19:51

Sorry to hear that Emily. It makes my blood boil to think of that GP. To think several people on here said it was diabetes and that fool who's probably paid a fortune treated you and your daughter like that.

Like I said already, something similar happened to me, my doctor didn't diagnose diabetes till I got very dangerously ill. My blood sugar was 45 mmol/l when I was finally admitted (a different GP had been called out and told my mum to take me to hospital at once!) and the hosp said another few hours and I'd have died. A few weeks later, the GP who messed up with me sent a man away with chest pains telling him it was indigestion - the bloke dropped dead of a heart attack. Complain before this idiot kills someone

If there's anything I can do to help emily just ask

GrumpyWomenRuleOK · 31/10/2007 20:00

Emily - that's exactly what I was afraid of, and there is NO excuse - Diabetes (Type 1) is one of the very very easiest dieases to perform a preliminary diagnostic test in the surgery - using either fingertip bloodtesting equipment or glucose sticks to test urine. Please, please make a formal complaint for the sake of others as much as anything. You can complain to the practice Manager, but you should also put it in writing to the Primary Healthcare Trust (or whatever it's called now another MNer will know more than me)covering your area.

There are some great MNers on here who also have diabetic dcs so I am sure you will get lots of advice and support for dd, but so glad that she is now getting care.

emilytankengine · 31/10/2007 21:57

Thanks to everyone who replied and for your messages of support. I will have to start a new thread now i know what we are dealing with .

I will complain don't you worry!

OMG! I am disgusted at your GP, how awful for you and your dd Emily. I'm sorry that she is diabetic, but I am sure once she is on the correct medication regime that she will bounce back. Once you are over the shock, I would seriously kick up a bit of a fuss about the GP . Hugs to you and your dd.
