Sedation at Dentist..TERRIFIED!!

MsCrapola · 10/01/2021 21:45

I am having a tooth removed due to a huge hole which stemmed from me not going to the dentist for 7 years from fear, and am having sedation through IV for it. I just wondered if anyone can tell me will I be able to feel the pain from it being done while sedated? Will my anxiety actually go away or will a bit still be there?

I am absolutely terrified of even having a filling and am dreading the appointment. I think the root is infected so not sure if that'll make the extraction more painful too. It's so bad that the tooth has actually moved downwards and I am not sure why! Definitely beating myself up now for not going to the dentist sooner.

Even without sedation, pain or discomfort from an extraction has been absolutely minimal in my experience. I had a tooth extracted last year, by my lovely dentist. I can honestly say I felt no pain from start to finish. There was mild discomfort from the injection, which was momentary.
The actual extraction was a few more moments of pressure. No pain at all 💐

It’s years ago now, but I was sedated for a root canal in my late teens mainly because I am really scared of needles. You won’t be aware of anything! When I came to it was like I was pissed - my dad had to come and collect me.

I think - but am not a dentist - that you will be given local anaesthetic as well as the sedation. You will absolutely not feel pain. The sedation will relax you into a sort of dream state, but you will still be able to take instruction from the dentist.

PlanDeRaccordement · 11/01/2021 00:10

I had sedation when my wisdom teeth were extracted. It made me so relaxed, I felt like I was floating. I felt no pain at all. It was a bit strange because I could hear my teeth cracking and there was tugging going on as they were pulled. The sedation also seemed to make time go faster as I had worried about having four out at once. The anaesthetic pain killer usually lasts a long time after as well. I didn’t feel any soreness until the next day. And even then the soreness was less pain than accidentally biting my tongue.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/01/2021 00:19

As others have said, you shouldn't feel any pain, just the prick of the local anaesthetic needle.

Tearsfortiers · 11/01/2021 00:26

Sedation is lovely. You will feel very relaxed and not worried at all.

MsCrapola · 11/01/2021 00:40

Thank you everyone for your reassurance, I do feel more relaxed about it now! It's on the 20th and already having a big panic. I'm such a wuss when it comes to the dentistBlushthink I'm scarred from a tricky filling once. Now my only worry is saying anything weird to the dentist!

I had a dreamy tooth extraction under sedation, no idea if I said anything weird to the dentist - wouldn't know him from Adam!

Gingaaarghpussy · 11/01/2021 01:31

I had sedation for tooth extraction. Don't remember a thing.

IsabellaMozzarella · 11/01/2021 01:55

I had sedation for a tricky wisdom tooth extraction. Don't remember a thing either. It was a really good experience I was looked after well.

Bobbi73 · 11/01/2021 02:01

I have sedation at the dentist and now I'm not afraid any more. They put the needle in my hand and the next thing I know, I'm waking up. Apparently, I'm conscious and talking (and making a bit of a fuss) but I remember nothing. Then I go home and sleep for a couple of hours. Honestly. It's the best thing ever. I was so terrified of the dentist but now I waft in and read a magazine while I wait. It'll be fine. 😀

youvegottenminuteslynn · 11/01/2021 02:01

Doctors have explained to me before that sedation doesn't necessarily stop the pain your body experiences - in the right dose it makes you not care about it at all! Not sure how better to explain it than that but it was very true in my experience for fairly serious procedures / pain levels.

EatsFartsAndLeaves · 11/01/2021 02:16

I had sedation a year ago, didn't know anything about it and apparently I kept asking when I was going in cos I didn't realise it had already happened Grin

CorianderBee · 11/01/2021 08:24

I was sedated for dental surgery at 14. I basically just fell asleep and then woke up and it was over

tinselandlights · 11/01/2021 08:39

Do not be afraid! I had a dental phobia, to give you an idea how scared I used to be of the dentist!

Because I am also epileptic, I had sedation before an extraction and it was LOVELY. It was like having three gin and tonics. It was absolutely fine - I was still 'with it' but felt relaxed. I'd have it again without worry or fear.

UpShutTheFuck · 11/01/2021 09:15

I was you a few years ago. My teeth were in an appalling state and I was ashamed at how bad I had let them get.

My dentist was lovely and reassuring/ I have absolutely no memory of anything that happened after the needle went in my hand.

The feeling of having faced up to the fear is incredible and there is the added bonus of no longer spending every day worrying about the state of your teeth.

Good luck. It will be fine.

Theunamedcat · 11/01/2021 09:17

They still numb the area you just dont notice

YougoFargo · 11/01/2021 09:20

I had conscious sedation for a blocked salivary gland. I don't remember any of it, but my friend who came with me filmed me before I went in and if I hadn't been on a dentist chair, you would have assumed I'd just been at the pub and had a drink or two! Very amusing. When I came round I had no idea the procedure had been done, except for having a numb mouth and stitches. Friend drove me home and I slept the day away. Really the most pleasant dental experience I have ever had (two root canals under local, multiple fillings and reconstructions etc !). In fact thinking about how pleasant the sedation was makes me wish I could have it for all of my interventions!

AnneShirleysNewDress · 11/01/2021 09:26

I had twilight sedation to have 2 wisdom teeth removed. I remember sitting in the chair and them starting the sedation then talking to the dentist afterwards but nothing in between.

Matsunoki · 13/01/2021 17:59

I am interested too as I also want sedation for a dental procedure! Are you NHS or private?

FunnyItWorkedLastTime · 13/01/2021 18:04

I had Valium for a tricky root canal as I’m a very difficult dental patient. The dentist said I fell asleep half way through. You will be absolutely fine with full sedation. You will be completely out of it for the next couple of hours and noticeably sub par for at least 24 hours, so make sure you’ve got someone to look after you.

FunnyItWorkedLastTime · 13/01/2021 18:05

I’ve had Valium prescribed on the NHS before - it was a long time ago though.

thereisonlyoneofme · 14/01/2021 15:39

I always had sedation because Im a total wimp. even for fillings Dont know if they are still doing it under Covid because obviously it takes up more time. I need to go as not been for about 5 years now, then had the excuse that Ive been having chemo so not advised anyway !
You will not know anything about it, the difference it made to me when I knew I could have it was amazing. Not many dentists in my area do it though.

MsCrapola · 14/01/2021 19:46

Wow thank you everyone! I'm now quite excited to be sedatedGrin it's been really nice hearing everyone's positive stories which makes a change to the negative ones I've been reading on google

@Matsunoki I am with a private dentist which is extortionate for sedation but worth it in my opinion!

MsCrapola · 14/01/2021 19:47

I will give feedback on my experience next week! I'm acting tough now but I'm sure I'll be back to being a wimp as soon as I walk through the doorGrin

Bmidreams · 14/01/2021 19:51

Yeah, I didn't remember anything. I remember being walked to the car after like a drunk lady. Then just slept for a few hours.
