Heart failure at 32? Scared!

Mumma02 · 07/01/2021 20:12

I have been having a range of worsening symptoms all year. Current symptoms are now;
Pins and needles/tingling in hands and feets. Have woken a few nights with pins and needles in arms.
Dizziness/feeling off balance at times and also faint
Constant headache on one side
Have experienced episodes of feeling like I can't get enough air in my lungs...mainly has woken me from sleeping and now feel uncomfortable lying flat on back.
Recent onset of chest pains and ectopic beats.
Brain fog
Everything I've looked up now points to heart failure. I'm so, so scared. Have 2 young children. How common is heart failure at 32? I can't find many statistics online.
I have normal blood pressure and a good cholestrol level when it was checked 2.5 years ago. Went to a&e when I first experienced breathlessness and had about a 10 second ecg which was normal but doesn't give me much hope. I am about 2.5 stone over weight which I really need to lose. Had so many blood tests and everything has been normal so far. Does anyone know much about heart failure? Sad Have gp appointment on Monday.

Do you have an oximeter ? See what your oxygen reading is - if less than 95 when resting ask them to check your lungs for a clot ( saddle type ) as sound very similar to something my pal went through in the lead up to discovery of a clot. They are no on anti coagulation meds and everything is tickety boo again . Can be a side effect of being on the pill if your family historically is predisposed to clots .

Try not to worry as the docs will help . Anxiety will make everything worse!

Metallicalover · 07/01/2021 20:19

Are you feeling stressed or anxious at the moment? Are there any triggers to these symptoms?
The pins and needles, breathlessness, heart palpitations, feeling faint etc can also be signs of an anxiety/panic attack

Beach11 · 07/01/2021 20:24

Sounds like panic attack

Mumma02 · 07/01/2021 20:29

I'm totally stressed and anxious! Sick to my stomach over it! I have had never ending symptoms for over a year for one thing or another...but now I have all these symptoms and I can't shake the feeling that something is very wrong. I am on the pill, on my break week and was thinking of stopping just to not have anything that could be causing anything in my system. My oxygen level was checked in hospital and was 98 but that's the only time. My symptoms come and go. I'm so, so worried about heart failure...doesn't seem like it could be anything else. Sad

www.nhs.uk/conditions/panic-disorder/

Sounds like your symptoms OP.

Heart failure normally presents with swollen legs and feet (where you can press on the swelling and it leaves an in print called pitting oedema) as well as feeling SOB on movement, having to prop yourself up on pillows to sleep as you feel like you cannot breathe and you have a persistent cough due to fluid on your lungs.

I agree you need to see a GP, it could also be due to your contraception (I was a mess on the mini pill cerazette and had suicidal thoughts).

Hope you get some answers on Monday.

SeaToSki · 07/01/2021 20:45

It is SO unlikely to be heart failure. There are a lot of things it could be and you are good not to ignore those symptoms.
Firstly, if you are overweight and know it, what one thing can you change to start addressing that? Please start today.
Secondly, can you buy three devices, a oximeter, an automatic blood pressure cuff and a Kardia? They are all for sale on Amazon, the Kardia needs a smart phone or tablet to pair and work with (you download a free app). The oximeter will tell you what your blood oxygen is and the Kardia will do an ECG. Next time you feel funny, take your oxygen, blood pressure and do a Kardia recording. The app will tell you if your rhythm is irregular or within normal ranges. If its irregular, you can save it and take it to show a doctor (or email it). If its normal it will give you some confidence that it isnt a heart rhythm problem.
Onto other possibilities. You could have a trapped nerve in your neck - it would explain all of the symptoms
You could have anxiety symptoms
You could have high calcium levels (a parathyroid problem)
You could have low thyroid levels (very common in new mothers)

When was the last time you had a blood test for any health issues?

If you are still absolutely convinced you have heart failure, you need a cardiac sonogram (like an ultrasound of the heart) It is the only definitive way to tell if you heart isnt pumping effectively (heart failure) but with normal blood pressure, its unlikely as the two are very closely linked.

SeaToSki · 07/01/2021 20:46

Just saw you are on the pill - that could be the culprit. Can you try a non hormonal contraception for a few months and see if it helps?

Mumma02 · 07/01/2021 20:51

@Metallicalover thank you so much for replying but I find it hard to accept that it is just anxiety when I get the symptoms so often and for long periods at a time. Such as being woken feeling breathless for around 5 hours. I should add it is more like "air hunger" if that makes any difference...like I can't get enough oxygen from the air. That is why I went to a&e.

OP posts:
Mumma02 · 07/01/2021 20:53

Thank you for the reassurance @SeaToSki it goes a long way at the moment. I have had numerous blood tests done recently and some at my own request. So full blooe count, vit b12, vit d, thyroid, autoimmune diseases...only thing that has come back is low ferritin at 9. Started taking liquid iron for this.

OP posts:
Mumma02 · 07/01/2021 20:54

Did my blood pressure 3 times yesterday. Readings were 119/79, 116/79 and 120/74

GentlyGentlyOhDear · 07/01/2021 20:56

I posted on your last threads and believe your ferritin is low? This would cause most of your symptoms. Did you get your thyroid checked? I have underactive thyroid and anxiety and also get a lot of those symptoms on and off. I have convinced myself I have several awful illnesses due to health anxiety and end up googling and panicking so I understand how scared you feel.

Mumma02 · 07/01/2021 21:00

Yes @GentlyGentlyOhDear had my thyroid levels checked twice. Just been told they are normal. So fed up of feeling unwell all the time. And I don't think it's the ferritin because I'm treating that so why would my symptoms be getting worse. Sad

OP posts:
Lemonpiano · 07/01/2021 21:03

Op, you have health anxiety. You've posted saying as much before.

The number of times you've posted diagnosing yourself with deadly diseases also supports this.

What support have you got for the health anxiety?

GentlyGentlyOhDear · 07/01/2021 21:08

Did they check your thyroid antibodies? I was told my thyroid levels were perfect but a scan and antibody blood test showed otherwise!
If I notice a symptom and worry about it then I notice it more and it worsens and I end up in a really negative cycle.
Were your B12 and vitamin D levels in the lower ends of the range? I think UK cut offs are very low for these two and 'optimal levels' isn't the same as being within range. Ferritin can take a long time to build up - especially if you're relying on something like spatone or feroglobin.

Mumma02 · 07/01/2021 21:13

I know @Lemonpiano. I do have it, but I'm honestly, honestly not making up any the symptoms I keep having/have had. It's awful! I hold off contacting the gp sometimes because I'm so aware that I look like a hypochondriac! But these symptoms are effecting my life on a daily basis and I'm yet to have a diagnosis. Sad

OP posts:
Mumma02 · 07/01/2021 21:15

@GentlyGentlyOhDear no my antibodies weren't checked. My vit d level was 50 but I don't know what my b12 was. The gp just said well within range.

OP posts:
RavingAnnie · 07/01/2021 21:23

You need to ask for your results don't just accept "normal".

It could well be low ferritin. Has your been checked? Ferritin levels under 50 (and the bottom of the range is often about 12) can cause symptoms like this.

It could have other causes too. Get all your results and come back and post with a pic showing the results with ranges.

You are entitled to your results, they are your data, so don't be fobbed off.

Mumma02 · 07/01/2021 21:30

@RavingAnnie my ferritin levels were 9 last time I was aware...but I feel like my symptoms have got worse since I started taking liquid iron so I assumed it couldn't "just" be the ferritin.

Thedot90 · 07/01/2021 21:32

This sounds like anxiety and not heart failure. Please speak to your Gp for reassurance and signposting to help managing it.

I have low ferritin and your symptoms are the same as mine. 9 is low I think so you may need iron supplements from the GP. They’ve made a huge difference to me. I’ve been on and off them for a while, every time my course finished the symptoms come back and I have to start tablets again. I think it’s because my periods are so heavy.

Worth looking into, stop googling!

RavingAnnie · 07/01/2021 21:45

9 is very low! I feel like death if mine are under 30 and symptomatic under 50. And ferritin levels are very difficult to raise. Mine's taken about 3 years because I struggle to tolerate iron supplements.

Treatment for low ferritin really seems to vary wildly. Mine was 8 when first tested and my GP said just eat more iron rich foods! I explained that I already ate a lot of iron rich foods she said nothing.

I did my own research and put myself on supplements and have tried various things over the years.

Some people I've spoken to were put on supplements by the GP and some were given iron infusions. So really mixed.

Liquid iron contains very little iron do unlikely to raise your levels by much.

The starting point is 210mg ferrous fumerate 3x a day taken with 500mg of vit c each time to aid absorption and reduce constipation.

If you can't tolerate ferrous fumerate then try ferrous bisglycinate (gentle iron) same amount again with vitamin c.

Some people can raise ferritin by eating 200g liver per week.

Others by eating lots of dark green leaves with each meal.

Make sure you don't have tea or coffee within a hour or two of your main iron rich meal as reduce absorption. As does calcium.

I've tried loads of things. Some success with eating tons of watercress but I can't stomach eating that amount after a few months so stopped then.

Have since then been on 4 x active iron tablets a day with vitamin c and just in the last few months got my ferritin over 50. Yay!

Do you know why your ferritin is so low? Do you have heavy periods?

Mine was caused by hypothyroidism causing heavy periods which then caused low ferritin (plus hypothyroidism reduces stomach acid so makes absorption of vitamins harder).

Haggisfish · 07/01/2021 21:46

The ferritin takes about six weeks to start making a difference to your symptoms. Honestly, it’s all anxiety. I take duloxetine for my health anxiety and it was like someone switched off the anxiety tap in my head. Honestly miraculous.

tellthem · 07/01/2021 21:47

sounds like me and it was low b12 mixed with anxiety from feeling increasingly ill (docs said normal until I saw the print out and it was clearly in red showing low...)

RavingAnnie · 07/01/2021 21:48

That's not true. It can be difficult for many people to raise ferritin levels. It's very common. Mines taken 3/4 years as mentioned above.

Some people end up having iron infusions because they can't raise them.

Especially a problem when the cause isn't fixed so iron is continually depleted.

Please look up dysfunctional breathing (Hyperventilation syndrome) and see if that fits too - I'm a respiratory physio which treats HVS, outcomes are really good - please take care of yourself and seek help, these symptoms need checking out for sure x
