Blepharitis? Tell me how to shift it.

Dry, flaky, slightly puffy eyelid. Just affecting inner corner and crease.
I clean it with a warm, wet flannel or cotton wool pad. It is then shiny, red, and sometimes sore. Have tried savlon, sudocrem and am now using E45 lotion as per pharmacist recommendation.
No change and it's been like this since October.
What causes this and how do I get rid of it? Dr Google is maddeningly vague.

My optician recommended bathing the eye with a solution of sodium bicarbonate in cool boiled water (no idea if it works - it turned out I didn’t actually have blepharitis).

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 06/01/2021 18:25

I'm surprised the pharmacist didnt give you golden eye ointment or even a mild antibiotic ointment which they can now sell over the counter. I had this numerous times in my early twenties. Make sure you throw all your eye makeup out and wash your make up brushes or you will keep reinfecting yourself

Lambside · 06/01/2021 18:28

I've had to stop wearing eye makeup. Pharmacist just said there was nothing else he could recommend. Grr
SpecialToffee what did you have? I'm assuming its blepharitis but maybe not

I was advised to wash the eyelash base with baby shampoo and water but found it very difficult. Switched to using this lotion and it really helped and was much less hassle: Blephasol

They also do single use sachet wipes which were handy out and about

TheCanyon · 06/01/2021 18:29

Dr eye(Dr hilary) eye mask, the microwave one. it helps a lot!

Whydoelephants · 06/01/2021 18:29

Have you tried a heated eye mask. Mine is bliss

TerrifiedandWorried · 06/01/2021 18:29

I had wipes from the optician called Blephaclean, went in a few days

SpecialToffee · 06/01/2021 18:32

I have meibomial gland disorder - dry eyes, basically. I had probably been rubbing my eyes and made the skin sore hence wondering if I had blepharitis. Treatment is hot compresses (you can get eye drops/sprays but I don’t find them very useful).

MargeProopsSpecs · 06/01/2021 18:34

Blephasol morning and evening without fail did the trick for me.
Plus liquid tears for dryness. Both on prescription.

DeanImpala67 · 06/01/2021 18:35

Ocusoft lid scrub foam, or the Ocusoft plus pads. I had permanently running eyes and swollen, flaky eyelids with large lumps under the skin. Within a week these made a massive difference. I also got some Optrex infected eye drops and used those. Cleared it all up and now my eyes are great.

Lambside · 06/01/2021 18:40

Thank you so much everyone. I have ordered the blephasol lotion and a dr Hilary endorsed eye mask from amazon.
Bring on relief!
And eyeliner

Blethaclean wipes were brilliant. Like the previous poster these cured mine in a few days.

Lambside · 06/01/2021 19:44

I can't believe I've had this for months and never found this out.

Baby shampoo in a cup of warm water. Dip in a cotton bud and use to gentle clean the line of the eyelashes. Do it twice a day. Also use hot compresses every evening. Cleared it up fast for me and then be very strict about taking off makeup etc.

Eloisedublin123 · 06/01/2021 21:43

Ok I’ve had this for years and can I add a step in? Cleaning and compressed and also massaging your eyelids too. Google this. So three steps, soak eyes in hot flannel, then do eye massages to move the gunk out of Your blocked eye lashes, Then scrub the lashes

nameforno3 · 06/01/2021 21:45

The Blephaclean wipes too, sorts it within a couple of days!

EachandEveryone · 06/01/2021 22:18

Oh ive had it for moths. Have you had your thyroid tested? Thats when mine started. My eyelids are swollen all the time and i miss wearing my contact lenses. I have an eye mask but its a palava doing it every day for me. I must make more effort.

Lambside · 08/01/2021 17:08

I don't have the crusty eyelashes. It's just at the crease and toward my inner eye.
I have not had my thyroid tested. I haven't talked to a dr as all that I read said there wasn't much they could do. And the pharmacist just said E45 and there wasn't anything else he could give me.
Anyways I have wiped my eyes last night and this morning with the Blephasol giving them a bit of a gentle massage and will try the mask tonight.

I had this last year, it was horrid - mine was quite itchy and raw. I don't know if I had Blephartis, just very irritated eyelids and corners of the eye. I found that a cream called hydrosil eye gel really worked.

Alocasia · 10/01/2021 19:51

Blepharitis is a chronic condition and likely to come back from time to time so it is recommended to use the wipes (Blephaclean) regularly, or at least keep some at home in case the symptoms come back.
Don’t use baby shampoo, it can interfere with the tears on the eye surface and cause dryness.

underneaththeash · 10/01/2021 20:40

Blepharitis is inflammation of the lids, there are a couple of different types, but it sounds like you have a skin irritation (eczema like).
Just go and have an eye exam and they can tell you what the issue is - you don't want to be using the wrong product.

Oh and if you do have blepharitis - diluted baby shampoo and cotton wool buds are a good alternative to pre-prepared wipes.

Lambside · 15/03/2021 20:37

Update. I reckon it is eczema and am moisturising regularly.

I've just read the thread and was thinking that it sounded nothing like my Blepharitis when I saw your update. Is moisturising helping? My DSis had eczema on her eyelids fr a long time and it went as soon as she cut out milk.

Lambside · 16/03/2021 20:32

Hellooo. Moisturising with cetraben is not getting rid of the problem just making it less uncomfortable.
If anything I think the actual patches of dry flaky skin are getting worse.

Have you seen the pharmacist or GP? I know that when I had eczema some creams seemed to make it worse.
