I have always suffered with migraines , lasting about 3 days.
I get the zig zag eyes & nausea.
I think yesterday’s was caused by a camera flash . As I was fine before that. Just wondering if anyone has any tops on getting rid of them other than going to sleep ect .. has anyone had that ear piercing ? If so does it work ?

I take a daily dose of candesartan which reduces the severity of each attack and almotriptan as a painkiller when they start. I can sometimes get away with taking 900mg aspirin or 800mg ibuprofen at the very early stages and then never have to progress to the triptan. It’s something that needs to be worked out with your GP though.

TammyTwoSwanson · 02/01/2021 07:16

I take CBD oil capsule every day and it's by far the most effective thing against my migraines, which used to be every couple of weeks. I've had only one in the last couple of months, and it was really short, with no nausea.

britespark1 · 03/01/2021 19:31

@TammyTwoSwanson can I ask what cbd capsules you take please?

Copernico · 03/01/2021 19:35

Topiramate is the only thing that’s worked for me (when not ttc, pregnant or breastfeeding).

WhipperSnapperSteve · 03/01/2021 19:42

I take topiramate and sumatriptan injections.

DP has the daith piercing and it's helped with the amount of migraines she gets (she's also about to try a new to NHS (not sure if our area or nationwide) treatment to reduce incidence) and sumatriptan injections too.

lightand · 03/01/2021 19:45

Got mine down to a minimum, from having them almost daily several years ago.

Discovered eventually, that I needed to keep my shoulders and shoulder blades warm, expecially through the night.

Spongebobsquarefringe · 03/01/2021 19:46

Topirimate and sumatriptan here too! Love sumatriptan if you take it right it’s fabulous!

I have gained tinnitus though

WutheredOut · 03/01/2021 19:55

I have a daith piercing - it did not stop my migraines but reduced the numbness I used to get in the right side of my face with a migraine.
I have been on various triptans Which worked ...until they didn’t.
I have had acupuncture - made it worse
I have had regular chiropractic cracking which helped a bit
I tried amatriptyline daily tablets which gave me horrific sleep paralysis, nightmares and depression
I have had hypnotherapy which I didn’t think would work - it has reduced my migraines massively - I used to be in a permanent state of migraine
I now only get one 5 day migraine a month - I take 900mg of aspirin as soon as I feel it coming and then whatever Triptan I have at the moment
But nothing stops the migraine - it lasts five days and I just have to keep on top of it with drugs. If I deny it’s existence I can end up in bed for a week.
Migraines are shit!

Pinkychilla · 03/01/2021 20:02

I used to have awful migraines where I couldn't see and felt sick for days, then I went to a chiropractor who adjusted my neck said was out of alignment and then I never had one again-wished I'd gone sooner!

ProfMcGonigle · 03/01/2021 20:05

I have a daith piercing and have not had a (proper) migraine since I got it done - over 2 years.

I get visual disturbances from time to time but no pain and no 'hangover'

Hollywhiskey · 03/01/2021 20:08

Topirimate is great, really life changing. Unfortunately not possible when pregnant or breastfeeding small babies but ok for toddlers, at least my doctor thought so.
I have tried amitriptyline but it was awful and it turned me into a zombie, I think I would be unable to function for normal life on that.
Diet Coke, sugar and salt when an attack is coming on. Rest would be great but I have two toddlers.
General things for keeping well help - so enough sleep, regular sleep pattern, regular meals, regular calories, balanced diet, not massive sugar highs and lows, enough exercise and fresh air, not too much stress, that sort of thing. It sounds really easy and obvious but it's really hard, especially with lockdown and little kids. The more I get right though the more migraine I can prevent.
I like doing endurance events like say I did 100 mile bike ride one day last summer and I just have to be really really careful to make sure I eat and drink enough, balance electrolytes and carbs etc otherwise I know I will finish with a migraine and ruin the whole day.

MargeProopsSpecs · 03/01/2021 20:10

On propranolol for about 15 years now, stopped my terrible migraines
altogether.

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 03/01/2021 20:12

I take propranolol 3xday to prevent them
I also use one of these a few times per week to help keep my spine in alignment.

Oh, we also use something called Kool'n'Soothe - they are gel strips applied to the forehead, cheapest from Amazon.

sonsmum · 04/01/2021 15:46

I find that taking 2 pink migraleve tablets within minutes of spotting the zigzag flashes / arm numbness can stop the migraine in its tracks. Sometimes I evade the actual headache. You have to take the pink tablets quick very shortly after your first symptom, the quicker you take them, the less time the migraine has to take hold.
Works for me. Thankfully don't have migraines too frequently now.

Eternia · 04/01/2021 15:53

I'm on daily amitriptyline for migraine. Initially they stopped altogether but now they're back, though I'm much more functional when they occur than I was before.

Ladydowntheroad · 06/01/2021 02:37

I was getting awful migraines, they started becoming more frequent. I was constantly worrying when the next one would be.

Due to sensitivity to a few other drugs my GP suggested Gabapebtin. I was reluctant at first but honestly it’s changed my life, I’ve not had a single migraine since starting it it’s crazy, and it makes me feel great Smile

Definitely worth considering if they become too much of a pain.

nobabiesyet2 · 12/01/2021 23:31

Although most people would advise against caffeine i find that the moment i feel a migraine coming on i need a very strong coffee and half of the time it helps and i skip straight to the post drome/hangover stage. I have migraine without aura though.
warm compress on my shoulders/neck really helps.

sweetkitty · 12/01/2021 23:33

Topiramate daily and sumatriptan for when I feel one coming on

ISBN111 · 12/01/2021 23:39

@lightand

Were your migraines tension related?
I often get tension migraines and am never sure if my head is bad because my shoulders and neck are tense or vice versa.
How do you keep your shoulders warmer? I hate having cold shoulders in bed but find i hunch under the covers to stay warm, which makes things worse!

ISBN111 · 12/01/2021 23:41

@WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo

What is that device called?

starsinthegutter · 12/01/2021 23:44

Daith piercing has reduced severity greatly, I can usually cope with ibuprofen now. Before I was vomiting all day. I need to see an osteopath too and sort my posture out through body work.

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 12/01/2021 23:45

Uhhh... cervical cushion I think.

www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07GXL6YG4?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

That should be a link to the one I bought.

NooneElseIsSingingMySong · 12/01/2021 23:49

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo and where did you get it from? I have bulging discs in my neck and I definitely feel my migraines and neck issues are related.

I’m another that’s tried a variety of things, for me it’s daily Amitriptyline and sumitriptan when they do kick in. Full sugar coke helps as well. I use the Kool n soothe head strips too. I get less migraines on the Amitriptyline and they are less severe when they come.

I got my daith pierced but honestly I don’t think it’s made much difference.
