Vomiting Bug - Help!!!!

chocciedooby · 24/10/2007 16:16

My Ds's have both got an awful vomiting bug. It started yesterday and is still ongoing. Not so much sick today but thats probably because they are only getting fluids and plain white bread (even that doesn't stay down too well).
I am keeping a close eye on them, they are getting rest etc and DS1 seems to be chirping up.
Can anyone recommend an alternative food to offer them other than bread and rice that they will be able to keep down?
They are both telling me they are hungry but then don't eat.

anyone out there?

Soup. Mashed potatoes. Plain yoghurt.

Assuming they also have diarrhea, lots and lots of water.

It is very important that they wash their hands well after toilet, so as not to give this bug to the rest of the family.

Good luck xxx

PellMell · 24/10/2007 16:47

we have it too
never known anything like it actually....thought we must have food poisoning.
We have only given dd2 spoons of dioralyte so far today

CoteDAzur · 24/10/2007 16:53

Food poisoning subsides after about 12 hours, as the suspect food starts leaving your system. Couple of trips to the loo, a bad night, and you feel better in the morning.

Stomach bugs are unfortunately a bit harder to get rid of. Vomiting and diarrhea and eating nothing for a week. It spreads like wildfire between children. It's quite hard especially on the younger children.

Hope you all feel better soon!

I was just going to post the same question
dd 14mths has d&v more of the D now! V seems to have passed (fingers crossed!!) i just dont know what to feed her. She's had it since the weekend and the dr has conf its a viral infection but i'm getting worried as she is hardly eating anything. when i bring her food she says 'yummy' but then will just spit it all out! tried bread, pasta with v v little sauce, mash potato etc
what else can i try? she's usually such a good eater

chocciedooby · 24/10/2007 17:44

My 2 don't have any D, just projectile vomiting which is horrible.
I know its not food poisoning so am guessing its Gastro.
Have just given them boiled eggs to dip toast into and so far it is stil on its way to their little tummies! Will it stay there? Maybe not.

Thanks CoteDAzur, I will try mash tomorrow with maybe a bit of ham or something.

Pellmell - I feel for you. Its awful. We are on day 2. Just as I thought DS2 was getting over it he threw up all over the sofa and hallway. He hadn't vomited for 7 hours at that point.

DS1 seems to be a lot better. Has only nibbled on bread and water but no vomit today.

My sister (a nurse)told me to avoid dairy produce if possible (gave eggs though oops). Have avoided Milk and given dry cereals.

llynnnn - when DS1 was around that age and had a vomiting bug I remember giving sips of dioralite drinks and water and dry foods such as rice crackers, bread. I suppose we have all got to keep offering food as long as its not going to upset the stomach.

Rice cakes are great for kids with gastroenteritis - which is what it sounds like to me. My ds hsa had 2 really bad episodes and it can take up to a week for them to recover and stop vomiting.

Hope you are all better soon

chocciedooby · 24/10/2007 17:54

I have just read a BMA healthbook about kids with possible gastro and it states the following: -

Infants
Day 1 - Give baby no milk for first 24 hrs. Instead give rehydrating solution at regular intervals.
Day 2 - Give baby a mixture of 2 parts rehydrating solution and 2 parts milk formula at each feed.
Day 3 - Your baby should have recovered completely and may return to normal feeding routine.

Treating older childen

Day 1 - Instead of milk, give rehydrating solution or unsweetened fruit juice.
Day 2 - You may add rice, vegetables and unsweetened fruit puree.
Day 3 - You may add chicken and/or soups to diet.May also reintroduce milk.
Day 4 - May add bread,biscuits, eggs, meat/fish.
Day 5 - Child should be recovered and back to normal diet.

hth us all.

I am even more certain this was food poisoning!
dh away for night dd2 and I shared a pie and chips from chippy at 8 pm (felt fine)

dd2 woke at 12.15 after being violently sick and I started with d and v within minutes of her and we have been like this overnight until about 3 pm today.
I felt like my ribs were broken and the stomach pains were like nothing i've ever known.
Now just feel weak and tired
Today Dh spoke to neighbour who also had a wife suffering the same symptoms and she had also eaten from the village chip shop last night.
They believe it is the bug just going round though.
I have a feeling a pukka pie was responsible though!!!!!

chocciedooby · 24/10/2007 18:15

Oooh don't talk to me about pukka pies. I used to love those. Can't get them here.

Mind you, I wouldn't want for an infected Pukka Pie at all.

pooka · 24/10/2007 18:18

There is certainly a stomach bug going around here. I know of heaps of people who have had the same.

pooka · 24/10/2007 18:19

Oh and second the advice about rice cakes. When my two have been ill in the past, I have tended to follow the BRAT guidance; so bananas, rice, toast (plain) and apples.

CoteDAzur · 24/10/2007 19:54

Funny advice can differ so much depending on where you live. I had heard that the UK advice on infant gastro is to avoid dairy. Here in France, we are told to give whatever DD would eat/drink. Especially milk. Since she didn't eat anything for a full week, doctor was adamant that we should get some milk and yoghurt down her.

Last year, DD went from 12 kgs to 11 kgs in 1 week with a severe gastro. They were about to hospitalize her, so we started force-feeding her purees with a large syringe through the side of her mouth. Not one of my proudest mommy moments but the alternative would be watching ham-handed nurses punch holes in her little arms for IV feeding...

hennipenni · 24/10/2007 21:33

DD has just had this, finally stopped vomiting after 8 days. Nerly ended up hopsitalised as dehydrated but managed to wee just in the time limit given. We were told that as she was keeping very little down and eating very very little just to give her what ever she fancied.

chocciedooby · 24/10/2007 21:56

Your poor DD hennipenni. 8 days of this is a long time. We have just finished day 2 and DS1 didn't vomit at all. DS2 vomited twice and that was hours ago. They have kept down their boiled eggs and toast (very small amount) and lots of fluid so I'm hoping they are coming out of it now.
Will bear in mind about offering them any foods that they may have a fancy for though as I really don't want to see them getting dehydrated. How horrible for you.

Anything ginger so ginger biscuits, ginger ale to drink etc. It has a calming effect on the stomach but only take small bits and often.

chocciedooby · 24/10/2007 22:03

Wow, Ginger biscuits just remind me of when I was nauseaous during pregnancy. Good Idea.

just catching up with this thread. dd is ow asleep, think her belly is hurting her though as she keeps wincing nut is just too tired to wake up properly to cry poor little thing. i hope its gone very soon. she had her milk tonight as normal (first thing she's really had all day) and so far so good! cant see it staying there for long though
choccie- i hope your ds's feel much better in the morning and that you all get a decent nights sleep
pellmell - hope you are all much much better tomorrow too

lovecamping · 24/10/2007 22:28

i was about to post about vomiting as well.

ds is 7mths and has had D&V for about 7 days now. however its not been constant and has gone 24hrs without vomiting to diarrhea, but then the next day will vomit a couple of times and bad nappies.
we've tried no formula for 24hrs, only sugared water and breastmilk, then half strength formula, now on 2/3 formula. this has not made a difference to when he vomits.

however he seems fine within himself and is sometimes more alert once he's vomited. i'm also getting conflicting advice as to what i can give him. he seems to be fine with rusks, however doctor says no bread sticks, or toast ...

what should I do??? whats the next step, or do i just have to ride it out since he seems otherwise fine?? also should i let him near other kids, even though his sisters havent caught anything?? could he also be teething??

sorry its ended up being so long...

llynnnn · 24/10/2007 22:28

meant to say, dr told us to avoid dairy (apart from her normal bedtime milk) and just to give her plenty of fuids and oral rehydration sachets and whatever she fancies to est. its just a shame she is too young to tell us what she fancies hey!!

llynnnn · 24/10/2007 22:33

sorry to hear about your poor ds lovecamping, its awful especially when they are sooo young and cant tell you what hurts etc. when dd was about 6mths she had a sickness bug and it did take a good while to get it out of her system then (hoping she wont be the same this time!). we just ended up riding it out after seeing a couple of different doctors and one telling us to stop milk totally and the other to water it down! but, as i'm sure you'll know, its vvv hard to not give your baby milk when its crying from hunger.
our nursery say that kids must be kept away until 48 hours after the last vomiting/diarrhea spell
sorry i cant be any more helpful, i'm sure someone will be, just wanted to say i know where you are coming from and its such hard work. hope u have a restful night x
