Vomiting Bug - Help!!!!

chocciedooby · 24/10/2007 16:16

My Ds's have both got an awful vomiting bug. It started yesterday and is still ongoing. Not so much sick today but thats probably because they are only getting fluids and plain white bread (even that doesn't stay down too well).
I am keeping a close eye on them, they are getting rest etc and DS1 seems to be chirping up.
Can anyone recommend an alternative food to offer them other than bread and rice that they will be able to keep down?
They are both telling me they are hungry but then don't eat.

thank you for yr support llynnnn. the only other time i remember the kids having v&d, ended with dd1 being admitted to hospital for 2 days, so this feels new to me.

instincts are telling me that he's fine and not dehydrated. i'm due to see my sister's kids and really want to see her with my parents.

btw, does anyone know how NOT to catch a bug (or reduce likelihood of catching)?

DS is only 4 months old now, but I'm terrified of him catching something when he's older, and, even worse, passing it to the rest of the family. (have a massive phobia of nausea and vomiting).

Any advice VERY greatly appreciated!

lovecamping · 24/10/2007 22:56

i dont think there is a way of avoiding these things, very good hygiene, lots of washing hands etc. but you can do all that and they will still get it ... sorry

lovecamping · 24/10/2007 22:58

especially once they start crawling .... one schoolo of thought is that each eposide of it will strengthen their immune system

Vomiting bugs are horrible. I used to get them as well - gross. I hope everyone is better soon.

The advice on starving out a tummy bug is old-fashioned. Research shows that it makes no difference to the length of time the bug lasts so our surgery now says you can eat to appetite. Drinking is important, of course.

If children have diarrhoea as well grated apple can help. Grating releases pectin, which is the same stuff that sets jam.

naturopath · 24/10/2007 23:06

Thanks sKerryMum. Do you take it every day, or just at times when bugs are going around?

I would say if they have the bug, do not give dairy products for a few days after they have stopped being sick. otherwise you are feeding the bug. Dr advised me if you are worried about how little DC are eating give them wotsits to suck on (apparently the salt in them is good for them) (he is a very good Dr)

And what has been said before, plenty of hand washing and good hygiene etc!

Moomin · 24/10/2007 23:34

we've had a bug in the house for the past 3 weeks now. Dd1 had terrible sickness for 4-5 days and was weak for another 3-4 days, not eating properly; dd2 got it a week later but was just sick for 36 hrs; 4 days later I got it - sick for 24 hours, felt lousy for another day and then got the shits for 6 hours; 5 days later and dh feels nauseous and has had shits twice and is completely knackered.

We've been really careful about hygiene, not eating dairy, etc., just think we've been unlucky and I'm not even sure we've all had the same bug there's so much going round at the moment.

Plenty of water, rice cakes, home-made soup all good for us. Tis grim having this with little ones.

hmm, I wonder if probiotics will work against viruses?

I woke up this morning with tummy pains and have been feeling nauseaous all morning. Have had D 3 times and let me tell you, its bad.(sorry if tmi!)
Both DS's have also had D this morning. The vomiting is currently at bay.
This is the worst D & V bug I have ever come across.
I feel quite helpless as I am now ill and my DS's are still really bad too.
To make things worse DS1 is also being realy naughty and extremely demanding.

With this bug we seem to feel fine one minute and awful the next. I feel so bad for my kids.

Thanks SKMum.
It's a juggling act of a differnet kind!
Runny nappies, followed by vomit all over the carpet, then more horrible poo.
DS2 is constantly filling his nappy. At least he is laughing as he does it
He says it is "funny poo poo".
Waiting for DH to come home from work so he can look after us all. He is convinced he won't get it, I'm convinced he will.

aww choccie, poor u! and your dc of course. hope your dh doesnt catch it, at least he will be able to look after you all then.

had a rough night with dd last night, she kept crying in pain with stomach cramps and then either V or D! bless her!
I've had to come to work today so she's with my mum. feel really really lousy for leaving her, but she does seem ok in herself this morning

CoteDAzur · 25/10/2007 17:26

I don't think it is wise to advise people not to feed their sick kids.

There is no such thing as "feeding the bug" with solids, as liquids also have calories and they also go down the very same gastroentestinal track.

Doctors will tell you not to feed a vomiting child for around a day after the last vomiting episode, to give the stomach time to settle.
Liquids only.

CoteDAzur · 25/10/2007 22:24

We are not talking about force feeding children here. We are talking about giving them the solids that they actually want to eat.

lovecat · 26/10/2007 10:46

DD spent the whole of last night vomiting, til she was only bringing up bile, poor thing It's horrible when they're little and they can't really tell you what's hurting. She ended up spending what was left of the night (4am onward) with me while DH escaped to the spare room.

DH has now gone off to work saying he feels a bit 'dodgy' - I seem to have escaped it so far but my poor lo is absolutely wiped out. We've given her rehydration salts and I've laid in supplies of my mother's tried and tested sick cure - flat lemonade and arrowroot biscuits - for when she feels like something to eat... we shall see how things progress. Now I have to go and wash 5 changes of bedlinen!

Lorayn · 26/10/2007 12:12

CoteDAzur
If you feed a vomiting child solids, they vomit more, hence increasing the likelihood of dehydration.

Hope your lo gets better soon Chocciedooby.
