Metronidazole

So I posted the other day after my root canal. Unfortunately I began to have pain which has gotten progressively worse and it’s now nearly a week since my treatment. 🥺 It’s fine unless I move my face in a way that puts pressure on the gums and then it’s Not Fine.

So I phoned my dentist and I’m anticipating him prescribing me metronidazole when he phoned back. He isn’t the one who did my treatment but he was the one who decided I needed the root canal and he did prescribe me those antibiotics to take in case it hurt, which it never did until I had the fucking treatment. I imagine he will tell me to get the prescription filled.

I’m allergic to penicillin and amoxicillin. I know I can’t drink on metronidazole which sucks over Christmas. Just the last straw really to not be able to have a glass of wine. But what I want to know is how rough do they make you feel in general? Feeling sick, diahorrea, etc? I’m gutted that this is happening.

I really feel for you. I had to have it after a bowel op and it made me quite poorly. And tearful Confused. The diarrhoea made recovering from the op harder.

I'm tiny so I had to spread the doses out and sometimes take half a tablet to get me through. Anti-B's hit me like a truck. If you feel dreadful let your GP know. Mine was quite understanding when I said I couldn't take the full dose at the usual times.

They're better than a nasty infection but don't suffer in silence.

year5teacher · 18/12/2020 10:36

@megletthesecond oh no - I’m 5 foot 1! It might be the same for me! What a bloody nightmare. It’s just the worst timing. Hopefully it’ll be ok but I am really not looking forward to it at all. I’d rather the tablets than any extra dental work though!

I didn't notice any side effects of the antibiotics but they did say strictly dont mix them with alcohol it could make you feel grim.
Full sympathy on the tooth pain.

year5teacher · 18/12/2020 13:40

@StrawBeretMoose thank you. That’s good to hear. Absolutely sucks to have to have a dry Christmas but that’s life.

I'm quite sure you could do with a drink if your username reflects your job, but honestly get the infection cleared and that wine (or whatever) will taste even nicer.
Hopefully you can imbibe on some of the other days of Christmas 🍷

BiscuitDrama · 18/12/2020 14:00

I’ve always felt fine on them. Smile

Rainallnight · 18/12/2020 14:00

I’m also five feet nothing and felt no side effects.

IHaveBrilloHair · 18/12/2020 14:05

Also 5 foot and have no problems but really do not drink, I tried it once and it was like a scene from The Exorcist.

misskick · 18/12/2020 14:33

I had bad headaches while taking them and nausea.

year5teacher · 18/12/2020 15:02

Thank you everyone! The dentist was actually super dismissive and said everything was fine despite me literally interrupting him and saying, no, listen, it’s swollen and painful 🤦‍♀️ Luckily I have got an earlier appointment with my actual dentist on Monday, so will have to struggle on until then.

I've had them before and was fine on them until I had a drink, my god the next day did I know about it, hungover and major sickness

notanotherlockdownsurely · 18/12/2020 15:06

I've had it numerous times and never had any sort of reaction. With the booze thing remember not to drink for I think about 72 hours after the course

merlotormalbec · 18/12/2020 16:06

Take them with food otherwise you'll feel sick and don't even take a sip of alcohol. I'm sorry it's the worst antibiotic to be on over Christmas! If you start them now tho you'll be okay for Xmas?

YellowHighlighterPen · 18/12/2020 16:11

Yup. Don't have so much as a sip. I'm small and my dentist said to even check any mouthwash for alcohol and don't have chocolates with booze in either.

AvoidingRealHumans · 18/12/2020 16:12

I've just finished a course and had no bad side effects, the only thing was I could taste a perfumy/floral taste in my mouth for a short while after each tablet.

Purpletomato · 18/12/2020 16:13

I'm fine with metro, no side effects, you might be ok.

Ballsto2020 · 18/12/2020 16:25

They can make you queasy and upset your stomach but if they do effect you the side effects should go after a couple of days. Defo take with food, I took mine with natural yogurt every time and that helped.

whereiwanttobe · 18/12/2020 16:32

Definitely heed the don't drink alcohol warning. I ignored it and thought just a couple of glasses of wine would be ok, and honestly thought I was going to have a heart attack that night. I had awful palpitations and felt dreadful. I don't remember daytime problems though.

AntiHop · 18/12/2020 16:38

I had it after the birth of dd and had no problems.

QuestionableMouse · 18/12/2020 16:40

It made me basically catatonic. I was so exhausted that even walking to the loo was a massive effort. Literally all I could do was lay in bed. I also spent the entire time I was taking it convinced that I was going to die.

Awful experience.

QuestionableMouse · 18/12/2020 16:42

Dentist blamed it on mixing it with booze but I don't drink at all and don't even have alcohol in the house.

cherrypie790 · 18/12/2020 16:43

I've had them for dental infections and felt horrendous the whole time - horrid metallic taste in my mouth, chronic stomach pain, upset stomach. It was grim.

But it did get rid of the dental infection, and I soon felt better once I'd stopped taking them. I'm allergic to penicillin and quite a few others so dread being given these!

IHaveBrilloHair · 18/12/2020 17:32

What can help is to drink a pint of water with each tablet, and also a yakult or similar morning and evening.

Fluffycloudland77 · 18/12/2020 18:55

They use that treatment, or they used to, to stop alcoholics drinking. That’s how severe the reaction is, it stops someone addicted to alcohol drinking alcohol.

But if you want to try it and report back 😃 we can’t stop you.

nancybotwinbloom · 18/12/2020 18:59

Do not drink on them.

I drank on them after the end of the course but I didn't wait the 72 hours.

I vomited so much I pissed myself. With the force of the vomiting. I have never felt so ill either when I wasn't vomiting.

It was not a good moment or day for me.
