How to get rid of lower back pain fast :(

Like an idiot I've been sitting on the dining room chair for weeks now working from home. My lower back has started to kill me. I've tried yoga, am taking nurofen but nothing's working. Sleeping is a nightmare at the moment. I really don't want to bother the doctors right now, is there anything anyone can suggest to help it get better? I have an office chair now but I can't really tell the difference yet since it already hurts

Hot water bottles and some voltarol gel! Even better if you can get someone to rub it in!

toomuchfaster · 24/11/2020 21:36

Hot water bottle should help. I find it better than painkillers.

Todayisgood2 · 24/11/2020 21:41

As above but also stretches/pilates. Heat patches

pixellott · 24/11/2020 21:45

A decent home massage, it was a game changer for me getting the tight muscles to relax.

GiraffeNecked · 24/11/2020 21:47

Stretches twice a day 10 minutes at a time. massages and just move more. Hours walking a day and 5 minutes every hour.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 24/11/2020 21:48

Look on the internet for exercises. And do them regularly.

Longtalljosie · 24/11/2020 21:55

Invert. Look up Mackenzie method. But go gently.

LucyLem0nade · 24/11/2020 22:07

Alternate heat and ice
Walk. It's important to keep active
Heat patches and creams
Hot baths
Tens machine can be very effective
Painkillers
Sleep with a slim pillow between your knees

Alternista · 24/11/2020 22:10

Downward dog

AgathaTabathaBagatha · 24/11/2020 22:11

Thank you everyone. I've been using Deep Heat and while it feels good it doesn't last. I'll be getting some Voltarol tomorrow. I am leaning on a hot water bottle in bed and it feels amazing at the moment! I've not been very active lately so that's probably why it's worse than it would otherwise have been!

The thing that works for me is running. It seems to unlock everything,

Elsiebear90 · 24/11/2020 22:13

Do some yoga poses and have a hot bath.

I find a topical gel better for pain relief when it’s muscular.
But yeah, agree with PP that movement and flexion based stretches are what help me most.

HotSauceCommittee · 24/11/2020 22:14

If you have trouble sleeping because of the pain, lying on your side with your legs bent should lessen it.
It sounds like you have had it for a while and you "don't want to bother the doctor" (although I think you should: lasting pain is very wearing), try a chiropractor. You'll have to pay, but they can do magic quite quickly.

HotSauceCommittee · 24/11/2020 22:14

Get well soon x

I have been seeing a physio for my lower back pain since the spring. It’s deffo worth getting a professional opinion to prevent it getting worse before it gets better.

MoonBaby1 · 24/11/2020 22:17

Daytime; a yoga ball to sit on, 5 minute stunts lying on your back on a carpet, a wheatbag shoved down your trousers.

At night: (a bit more controversial) an hour before bedtime, 2 Nurofen + and one chlorphenamine,, Solpadine max dissolved right as you get into bed. Wheat bad Nader your lower back. You’ll sleep like a baby!

OllyBJolly · 24/11/2020 22:21

Private physio and do the exercises.

RosesAndHellebores · 24/11/2020 22:25

Heat wraps
Naproxen
Pilates
(I badly wedged a vertebrae a few years ago and have a cpl of bulgy discs L4/5. Back in April after 3/4 weeks on a dining rm chair I developed very severe nerve pain - one sides/hip, buttock, etc.)

Spoke to Dr because I was nervous about spinal cord due to fracture. She was convinced it was neuropathic pain and prescribed 10mg Amitryptiline and two 10 min gentle walks each day (bugger Boris and lockdown rules!).

All gone in 48 hrs. And the little blue pills buy me at least 6.5 hours of good sleep.

Clevs · 24/11/2020 22:26

Swimming (when the pools open again).

Jacuzzi/hot tub.

BungleBoo · 24/11/2020 22:35

This is a reoccurring issue for me every time I menstruate 😔 it's bloody ain't for a week before and after my period

The only thing that helps is using a pillow between the legs/knees in bed and the doing the Five Tibetan Rites

(kinda like yoga but it actually helps and strengthens your core muscles)

Ultimately you're gonna have to get a suitable chair for working

Kneeling chairs are the best IMO

RayOfSunshine2013 · 24/11/2020 22:37

Chiropractor. I couldn’t walk this time last week without nearly crying in pain.. two sessions and I am almost pain free. Just needed a good cracking Grin

User258544 · 25/11/2020 00:29

For future prevention a firm pilates roller is a great investment.

Natsel84 · 25/11/2020 00:32

If you can afford it a chiropractor.
