Phenegen? For insomnia

KatyMac · 17/11/2020 08:57

So, I'm not sleeping, menopause, plus anxiety and now I've just started antidepressants which is making it worse

Someone suggested I try Phenegen as I already take an antihistamine and I could swop

Last time I tred to buy it the chemist (cant remember why but it was 10+yrd ago) the chemist wouldn't sell it to me

So is this a good idea?

I find it helpful and non addictive

Just tell the pharmacist it's for travel sickness

KatyMac · 17/11/2020 09:11

When shall I go!! Grin

Sounds good

Snap op.

Peri menopause here plus medicated for anxiety which has been worse again over the last few weeks due to lockdown looming/business/financial issues so my insomnia is horrendous.

I either fall asleep quickly but am wide awake from 2-3 am solidly till I'm shattered by tea time or I lie awake until 2 am and then actually get up. Hmm

I've made my way through lots of Netflix I can tell you.

My dh gets up at 3 am for work and actually asked me this morning because yet again I was awake and sweeping the kitchen floor if I actually ever sleep Blush

I get horrendous period and ovulation pains and take codiene when I get them.

They are the nights that I fall asleep and stay asleep till my alarm goes off the next day but would never take them continuously due to the nature of the beast. That and they make you constipated.
I may try phenargen myself

EvilHerbivore · 17/11/2020 09:28

I take them (prescribed) for insomnia, I use them maybe monthly to 'reset' when I've got myself in a terrible sleep pattern. Can make you feel like you've got a hangover though so try and schedule them when you've got an easy day the next day if you can

Seeline · 17/11/2020 09:33

I had them for morning sickness. Turned me into a complete zombie! Should help with insomnia Grin

Tibtab · 17/11/2020 09:41

Loads of pharmacies won’t keep it in stock because it is abused (or they’ll pretend that they don’t have any in if they think you are using for any reason other than travel sickness).

KatyMac · 17/11/2020 09:46

That's what worried me @Tibtab and I can hardly go round lots of chemists right now

I dont know if I should be honest or lie

Yes codeine works but I can hardly take that daily as you say.....I also have amintryptaline (or whatever) but I have been advised I cant take that randomly

I use it for sleep. I am never asked why I am buying it, but if I was I would say for travel sickness probably. You can get it online if you want to. Sominex is promethazine too and sold as an otc sleep aid if you want to be open about it. Night nurse contains promethazine also iirc.

MotherForker · 17/11/2020 09:52

You can buy it from online pharmacies, I have done.

Snooper22 · 17/11/2020 10:53

Works for me but sometimes I only take half a tablet as it can make me really groggy next day.

Chevron123 · 17/11/2020 11:28

I had it prescribed very easily (for anxiety). I find it's very good at getting me to sleep but I'm still waking around 4am.

IndieTara · 17/11/2020 11:34

I have the same problem but didn't think you could get Phenergan otc
I'm just waiting for the Melatonin i ordered a few days ago

KatyMac · 17/11/2020 13:13

I bought Sominex easily - I will try it tonight and see if one is too much

OP posts:
Mynamenotaccepted · 17/11/2020 13:26

I take it occasionally and it works but it sometimes gives me horrendous restless legs if I take it for too many nights. I too buy it on line. Hope you sleep well soon.

rosie39forever · 17/11/2020 14:32

Promethazine can react adversely with antidepressants so please be careful when taking both, if your insomnia is meno or peri related have you considered HRT? I tried everything if soul destroying insomnia and went on transdermal HRT as a last result and it's been a lifesaver...maybe worth considering as peri/meno can last for years.

LadyEloise · 17/11/2020 14:56

Phenergan didnt work for me but Nytol One a Night and generic equivalents do work for me.

pinkbalconyrailing · 17/11/2020 14:59

night nurse
melatonin doesn't work for everyone but is worth a try. it requires stimulation (ok the opposite of stimulation really) to work.

dontdisturbmenow · 17/11/2020 16:43

I also have amintryptaline (or whatever) but I have been advised I cant take that random
You certainly can. I take it once a week and it gives me one good night sleep. It actually works much better the less I take it. It's been confirmed by more than a few clinicians that's it ok to take randomly.

HOWEVER, Amitriptyline is an antidepressant too, so taking it alongside another could result in too much serotonin which although rare can ce quite dangerous.

Is it your GO who suggested taking both?

Melatonin is great for falling asleep, when not over stimulated, but won't help with the waking up feeling wife awake in the night.

It's been 4 years on for me. The only thing that helps with the 4am wake up is doing breathing exercises.

dontdisturbmenow · 17/11/2020 16:45

Also agree about considering hrt. It resolved sleep issues for some women I k is. Sadly it didn't fit me.

KatyMac · 17/11/2020 18:58

Oh I have hrt/patches but they aren't perfect

Counsellor/advisor from the surgery suggested the phenegen as a short term measure while waiting for proper counselling im having nightmares as well as the not sleeping

I stopped the amitryptaline a few months back its a low dose (10?) That i had been taking foe pain relief and hadn't really worked

OP posts:
Springcatkin · 17/11/2020 19:02

I was prescribed it to help sleep but it didn't really work plus made me fall awful the next day

pinkbalconyrailing · 17/11/2020 20:27

you probably tried magnesium at bedtime already?

a relative went on a sleep deprivation regime (as awful as it sounds) following treatment for sleep apnoea.
if was basically sleeping 3 hours for a few nights and then slowly increasing to 6 hours over a couple of weeks.
relative now sleeps well, but I guess that's a pretty radical approach that you should only do under observation of a sleep clinic.

KatyMac · 17/11/2020 20:49

Hmm I stopped taking my vitamins when my depression really hit - maybe now I am a little more stable I should re introduce them - I take magnesium daily along with zinc, iron, potassium, K2, Methyl Folate and ubiquinol

Ahbump · 17/11/2020 20:52

I tried this at the weekend only 10mgs I wake up multiple times a night and only get around 4 hours this helped me sleep but the next day I can’t wake up and feel awful . Rather be sleep deprived I think

KatyMac · 17/11/2020 23:10

Well bizarrely I am exhausted tonight & I had a 2.5 hr nap later afternoon - so I will take nothing and see what happens
