Stomach bug and burping

Salamander91 · 12/11/2020 10:24

I have what I'm assuming is a stomach bug (diarrhea, nausea, fever..)

The problem is that I'm constantly burping and it's really uncomfortable. Any tips for stopping the burping? I have wind-eze and rennes but they're not doing anything Blush

Maybe try Pepto-Bismol?

Salamander91 · 12/11/2020 10:51

Thanks I'll give it a go

Plain yoghurt with live bacteria?

BIWI · 12/11/2020 10:52

... although, hang on - those are also symptoms of Covid-19. I'd get a test if I were you.

Suzi888 · 12/11/2020 10:54

Burping was always considered an alarm bell when I worked in a pharmacy. I think they mean the non stop, extremely painful burps.
It is probably the bug so I don’t mean to worry you, but if it continues I’d ask a pharmacist, just to be on the safe side. They can advise you properly.

Salamander91 · 12/11/2020 11:07

@BIWI thanks. I was tested yesterday because of the temperature. It was neg Smile

@Suzi888 I'll keep an eye on it and see a pharmacist in a few days if it's still happening. They don't hurt but are pretty much constant. It's really strange. I genuinely don't know where all the gas is coming from Blush

@salamander91
So annoying and uncomfortable! hope they ease off.

CharityPecksniff · 12/11/2020 12:24

Peppermint tea - cheap and surprisingly effective.

Hope you feel better soon.

Nikhedonia · 12/11/2020 12:53

I'm in the same position, OP (but only have the burps) it's disgusting and I'm glad to be working from home! I've not stopped all morning. Didn't realise it would be something to see a pharmacist about...

Salamander91 · 12/11/2020 19:17

Sorry you're having the same @Nikhedonia! Let me know if you find anything that helps

Still going! I will be sure to let you know and please let me know if you find anything that works, too!
Saladfingersscaresme · 13/11/2020 17:56

Pepto bismal works a treat for stomach bug burps, it stops the nausea too.

Salamander91 · 13/11/2020 18:43

Thanks @Saladfingersscaresme I tried it today but didn't notice much difference. It tastes rotten too 🤢

GP has prescribed me some lansoprazole so fingers crossed that helps!

Saladfingersscaresme · 13/11/2020 19:07

@Salamander91 sorry to hear it didn’t work, it doesn’t taste great but has settled my stomach in the past. I take lansoprazole every day and have done for nearly 20 years, it’s very good and works straight away. A warning though, only use it while you have problems, don’t use it long term, my stomach goes into acid overdrive when I come off them.
I don’t know if your GP told you how to take them, my gastroenterologist told me to take one with water as soon as I wake up and don’t drink or eat anything for at least half an hour to give the pills chance to work. Hope you feel better soon.

picklemewalnuts · 13/11/2020 19:08

I do the opposite, drink cola. It seems to release the gas more gently. Saves the stress.

Salamander91 · 13/11/2020 19:17

@Saladfingersscaresme glad to hear it works quickly! I took some rennies before I picked up the prescription so I have to wait a couple of hours before I take my first dose. I've been prescribed two 30mg tabs a day so hopefully it'll help. Only been given a weeks worth so definitely won't overtake.

Salamander91 · 13/11/2020 19:28

@picklemewalnuts I think I would explode if I added anymore gas 😂 I'll consider it if the lansoprazole doesn't work though. Thanks Smile

Although drugs may help you immediately, I think you need to have a longer term solution to sort out your gut flora - you need something that will encourage good bacteria (but not feed the bad bacteria).

Have you, by any chance, been on antibiotics recently?

Salamander91 · 13/11/2020 21:38

@BIWI can you recommend anything? I haven't had any antibiotics since Feb

OP posts:
BIWI · 13/11/2020 21:45

Feb still fairly recent - the trouble is, although they deal with all the bad bacteria, they aren't discriminatory, and so will kill off the good bacteria too.

A good plain yoghurt with live bacteria will help, but also try and get hold of some probiotic supplements there's a site here with some examples (I haven't used any of those so can't comment!)

Fermented foods are also supposed to help see here

BIWI · 13/11/2020 21:46

I'd also avoid sugar as much as possible (not just in its 'raw' form, but cut down on as many carbs as you can - these are sugar as far as the body is concerned)

gottakeeponmovin · 13/11/2020 21:48

@Suzi888 why was it an alarm bell?

Suzi888 · 13/11/2020 22:14

@gottakeeponmovin I was a part time pharmacy assistant whilst as Uni and we were trained that when people had certain symptoms, or on other meds/pregnant etc that we should hand over to the pharmacist. I can just recall that burping was an ‘alarm bell’ in the training manual and it can be dangerous/ point to more serious conditions that warrant further investigation.

Salamander91 · 14/11/2020 09:37

@BIWI thanks! They were pretty hefty antibiotics so definitely possible they've affected the good bacteria too.
