Baby with uneven size eyes

As the title suggests. I think there is extra skin on one eyelid. Sometimes it’s lots more noticeable than others, especially in the mirror it’s lots more noticeable.

I’ve read about Ptosis and it could potentially be that?? I feel like sometimes it ever so slightly droops over her pupil and sometimes it doesn’t?? The eyes seem to be working in conjunction well and pupils are typically symmetrical.

I’ve been to the GP who has put the referral
In but I feel we will be waiting a while during current climate! Should I pop to go and see a high street optician? She’s 5 months old.

Anyone had any similar experiences? Thanks

Bump anyone?

Pic might help!

Almost everyone has slightly uneven eyelid sizes. Hope the referral rules out any concerns.

Inmyownlittlecorner · 08/11/2020 19:14

My now 7 year olds DD has a Ptosis in her left eye. She was seen at 6 weeks & we’re still under the paediatric ophthalmology team, but due to Covid haven’t had an appointment yet this year.
We had to patch her good eye for a couple of years & she has glasses, but we’ve elected not to have surgery as it’s quite invasive & it doesn’t impact on her vision. It’s often more pronounced when she’s tired.

ophthalmology team are definitely your best bet, and lots of opticians refuse to see such young children. Services should be running and the paediatric teams are very good at getting new referrals in normally. Have you checked red eye reflexes? (Taken pictures with flash to make sure you get red eye back).

Spamfrit · 08/11/2020 19:28

I think it’s most likely skin developing
See
aapos.org/glossary/pseudostrabismus
The fact that the light reflex is in the same place in each of your child’s eyes makes me think it’s not a squint.
Is she reaching for things- for stereopsis vision (both eyes working together well) could test her by seeing how accurately she attempts to pick things up.

Spamfrit · 08/11/2020 19:29

Ptosis just means droopy eyelid. Neither look droopy

Spamfrit · 08/11/2020 19:32

If you take a photo of her does she get ‘red eye’ in both?

Would she have very watery eyes ? Is it possible to take a photo from above looking straight down over both eyes ?

RunFromMyScytheAndMyMerkin · 08/11/2020 19:57

Are both pupils of equal size? Could be anisocoria if not
Do any photos with flash show white in the pupil? Did the doctor mention Horner syndrome? I’m not saying she has this it just reminds me of someone with this

Sweetpea1989 · 08/11/2020 20:14

Thanks everyone for replies, lots to digest. Yes she is reaching for things and no I haven’t done the red eye test thing I’ll try that tomorrow.
These are all photos of me looking down and her looking up

The Dr didn’t mention Horner syndrome either I’ll take a look at that thanks.

Does your dd have a flat head due to lying on one side? My dd did and it started to distort her face a bit, pushing one eye out and making them look asymmetrical. I know that sounds awful but it corrected once she started to move around more.

Sweetpea1989 · 08/11/2020 20:35

She’s a tummy sleeper and I’m pretty sure she turns her head and doesn’t favour one side.

The photos actually look pretty even to me.
No one face is symmetrical. I think that baby has gorgeous eyes Flowers

Yawningyawning · 08/11/2020 20:39

My DS had his eyelid lifted when he was three. You can still see the difference when he is tired too. He needed glasses for a while.

Sweetpea1989 · 08/11/2020 20:57

Thankyou @PriceEmUp when you spend most of the day gazing in those eyes you see the difference!

@Yawningyawning did the lid cover his
pupil all the time prior to the op? Did it all go as you had hoped??

DD had similar. We got the referral at 10 months and saw the specialists at regular intervals for a year. At that point she was discharged as no medical issue and at 3 years old it's almost unnoticeable.

Bootsuit · 08/11/2020 21:16

DS has this as does his father. In their case it is perfectly harmless and doesn't have any negative impact on their eyesight.

DH was very pronounced as a baby but as he got older it grew into his face I suppose!

When they get tired and the muscle weakens through fatigue it becomes more noticeable but its not immediately obvious when you look at their faces.

Sweetpea1989 · 08/11/2020 21:20

Thanks @Bootsuit does it have a name??

Glad your DD isn’t having any issues any more @caffeinebuzz I hope it’s the same for us. So scary when it’s eyes though.

When I took him to the opticians for routine check she said that it was ptosis. They would only do something about it if the eyelid affected his eye sight.

For some reason it stands out more in photos, I really don't notice it in the flesh anymore.

imissthebubonicplague · 08/11/2020 21:38

So hard to tell in photos but the 2nd set look much more symmetrical ! Opticians may not be able to do all the tests compared to the hospital but they can rule out some of the more serious eye conditions such as cataract or congenital glaucoma so maybe give them a call and see what they say ?

icanbreathagain · 08/11/2020 21:41

I never would have noticed
