Have just been for mine

not the funnest way to spend 10 minutes, but hey! don;t need another one for 3 years...

also, here's a tip if the nurse has trouble finding your cervix, mine seemed to have wandered off, lie on your left side..

was over and done with very quickly and with complete and utter sensitivity and discretion.

i know it is a bit yuck, but it is important, and you can always take a friend with for moral support.

so, if you have been meaning to book in for yours, get it booked !

I get confused about the neccessity for a smear test for certain women as a gp of mine once told me that if you were in a long term, faithful relationship and had had several normal results over the years, with the same partner, that you didn't really need a smear test. He said that he tells his wife not to bother having one ! I don't know if anyone here has the knowledge to be able to explain why he might say that as I was quite shocked when he told me - he was quite eccentric and also wasn't terribly keen on the MMR vaccination.

I still go for mine though even though I fit into his category of not needing one as I would rather be safe than sorry.

itcameuponamidnightclayre · 06/12/2007 10:17

i haven't had one yet, i'm getting it done next friday, anyone want to come and hold my hand?

Camillathechicken · 06/12/2007 10:23

winetime.. my understanding was that you can carry the HPV virus regardless of how many sexual partners and therefore you need checking out regardless. and surely not every case is caused by the virus. I have been in a long term committed relationship for almost 11 years and now have an abnormal result. so don;t see the sense in not having them regularly.

MerryAnnSinglemas · 06/12/2007 10:24

yes, I'll hold your hand, if you'll hold mine on Tuesday !

Camillathechicken · 06/12/2007 10:24

MerryAnnSinglemas · 06/12/2007 10:40

you'll be fine - just try to relax - I'm going to have some rescue remedy !

me23 · 06/12/2007 11:47

although it is less common nuns and virgins can get cervical cancer too, so they still need smears and they haven't even had sex.

MerryAnnSinglemas · 06/12/2007 13:48

yes, it always seems a bit unfair for a nun or virgin to have to submit to the indignity of a smear - but as you say, cervical cancer can happen to any woman

I put off having my smear test for 2 years and finally plucked up the courage to go.

Had a letter last week to say i have to have it done again as the sample was insufficiant

constancereader · 09/12/2007 20:13

You poor thing....I am VERY sympathetic.

Just when you think you have got it over with.

expatinscotland · 09/12/2007 20:15

get back on the horse, pelvic!

you can do it!

my smear caught my CINII early.

after a loop procedure in early 2002, i'm happy to say i'm back on every 3 years schedule.

don't want to think about where i'd be if i'd skipped that smear test.

JUST DO IT!

XmastimePelvicfloorsandwine · 09/12/2007 20:17

It will probably take me another 2 years to go back.
I know that nobody would willingly volunteer to have this done and that it is better to go and get the all clear but i really have a bit of a thing about it.
I always feel totally humilitated .

MerryAnnSinglemas · 09/12/2007 20:23

do go back pelvicfloor - I know it's very undignified and I am already feeling embarrassed before I go- but you'll feel relieved when it's done - am sorry you have to have a repeat -that's really unfair.

expatinscotland · 09/12/2007 20:24

have you discussed this with anyone, pelvic?

it's a very normal feeling, you know.

but worth discussing because your health is so important and you are so important to so many people.

at some FPCs, there are even some nurses who specialise in people who are especially nervous about their smear tests.

everyone has a different comfort level, but your health is so important.

expatinscotland · 09/12/2007 20:25

i used to feel it was undignified and i only did it because in teh US it is necessary to get a repeat prescription for your BCP every year.

but then, after having undergone colposcopy, biopsy and loop, and the agonising wait in between tests and for results, i can think now, 'omg, what if i hadn't gone! i'd not only have no dignity, but maybe even no uterus, no health or no life!'
