Have just been for mine

not the funnest way to spend 10 minutes, but hey! don;t need another one for 3 years...

also, here's a tip if the nurse has trouble finding your cervix, mine seemed to have wandered off, lie on your left side..

was over and done with very quickly and with complete and utter sensitivity and discretion.

i know it is a bit yuck, but it is important, and you can always take a friend with for moral support.

so, if you have been meaning to book in for yours, get it booked !

Firstly bump.

I will continue to bump this forever!lol

Same here me and my, I was also having very painful periods which apparently may have been due to problems passin blood clots or something. Grrrrr.

QueenofVenus · 16/10/2007 10:44

Am 28, have never had one done im terrified at the thought, embarrassing, painful, and then what if theres bad results, im to worried about it, i know i should go, im not so stupid as to think, i'll just not bother, but i just cant get myself to do it, its too scary!

GrumpyOldHearsewoman · 16/10/2007 10:55

I had to have one a week after giving birth because I had contracted a serious infection. I was in so much pain beforehand that I could barely walk and I still had about 5 million stitches after delivering a 9lb 6oz baby (I'm 5ft 2 and 'petite'). It was the worst thing I have ever endured

BUT

I was able to be treated for my problem, and what had been a few seconds of extreme discomfort led to the curing of a week of fairly bad pain and illness, so I'm glad I had it done.

Normal smear tests are worse in theory than they are in practice. It's the old 'Lie back and think of England'. Just relax and think about something else - mind over matter. You really must have them.

queenofvenus

I have every sympathy, having an internal is not that pleasant, but it is far more pleasant than , god forbid, becoming ill and possibly needing invasive treatment

take a friend, your mum, sister, someone with you and book a double appointment so you have plenty of time

i hate them but would never not go/put them off.we have them for a reason!well done lulu for thread!

SeaShells · 16/10/2007 12:13

sigh, yes I'm supposed to go every 6months for one due to abnormal results for like 10yrs now, however the last two tests have finally been normal but was due to go in july and haven't got round to going with moving house/doctors etc, will go tomorrow and book appointment.

hifi · 16/10/2007 12:31

had a 2 year gap with mine, when i did finally go back the nurse told me test results had been inconclusive for 7YEARS! as i bleed when they do it they couldnt get a result, but noone had told me for 7 bloody years. when she did do one about a cup full of blood came out, she immediately said it was serious and needed to see a gyni. managed to see one within 3 days, same thing happened, suggested a biopsy, had one that weekend. i had never been so frightened in my life, even had words with my sister to make sure dd was ok if i died, suggestions of ovarian cancer. anyway all results came back fine, just very angry that tat it could have gone on for so long. the moral of the story double check your results.

hunkermunker · 16/10/2007 12:33

Me...

You're meant to go mid-cycle, aren't you?

Will book one this week. Please nag me.

AnAngelWithin · 16/10/2007 12:34

erm me. i have never had one

LoRayningNewtsAndFrogs · 16/10/2007 12:52

Those of you that havent had one, it really isnt that bad, seriously, I'm not saying this just to make you feel better.

Like I said earlier I had a smear, then a colposcopy and then needles injected into my cervix! and then some of ym cervix sliced off with a hot wire!!

Even that didnt really hurt too much, I would prefer to have a smear test than a blood test anyday.

I understand it is scary and very embarrassing but so worthwhile.

Cancer is a lot loss dignified.

NomDeBroomstick · 16/10/2007 12:52

Me.

I had one last year but they sent me a letter asking me to go back as there was a 'problem' with my sample. I still haven't been back.

NomDeBroomstick · 16/10/2007 12:56

Yes, the ideal time is 10 days plus after the first day your period.

I had one last year; it was very quick and painless. The nurse told me to take a deep breath and then exhale sowly - that helps you to relax and makes it easier to insert the speculum.

SKerryMum - that's shocking. The med system in Ireland is a joke.
