Have just been for mine

not the funnest way to spend 10 minutes, but hey! don;t need another one for 3 years...

also, here's a tip if the nurse has trouble finding your cervix, mine seemed to have wandered off, lie on your left side..

was over and done with very quickly and with complete and utter sensitivity and discretion.

i know it is a bit yuck, but it is important, and you can always take a friend with for moral support.

so, if you have been meaning to book in for yours, get it booked !

i think it is important mrsc, as it shows that regular screening is vital and imperative... screening in this area of womens; health makes the most enormous difference to saving lives.

Oh, MrsCarrot , sorry to hear that. I hope you are feeling OK.

MrsCarrot · 25/05/2008 15:09

yes, I agree, I was a just a bit hesitant in case I panicked people who are already worried/waiting for results etc

however I decided it was better overall as it's so important. It has saved my life. All my friends have booked theirs and some of them are long overdue.

lulumama · 25/05/2008 15:10

i am waiting for results of second smear after abnormal results, and i have always had regular checks.

i am confident all will be well. but you just never know, and it is so important to to be checked.

mrsc, you are the reality of what cervical screening is all about.. catching things early enough , picking up on cancer. a smear test is not just a scraping of cells. it is to make sure your cells are normal. it is worth 10 minutes of having the nurse looking up your chuff!

OP posts:
MrsCarrot · 25/05/2008 15:17

lol at looking up your chuff!

Yes, the majority of abnormalities return to normal and if not the outpatients treatment is quick and effective. I know quite a few people who've had that done now. Good luck with it.

Lacadaisycal - I feel surprisingly well thank you, almost back to my old self.

lulumama · 25/05/2008 15:18

glad you are on the mend, mrsc. x

lackaDAISYcal · 25/05/2008 15:30

that's good MrsC, glad you are feeling OK . I remember my friends mum having a hysterectomy years ago and she was basically bed bound for six weeks. I'm sure it didn't help her recovery.

MrsCarrot · 25/05/2008 15:46

well, I rested a lot the first week but it's not really possible to stay in bed for weeks with three children, one of them a very lively 15 month old!

I do think moving around a lot helps but it's important to be careful. I've read lots of books in the sun and that was lovely.

SparklyGothKat · 25/05/2008 16:09

I had my smear test done on monday at the FPC just before they put a coil in. I thought I would kill 2 bords with one stone..

oh lulumama what a ...fingers still crossed xx

JodieG1 · 30/05/2008 18:44

MrsC - So sorry to hear that, first I've read about it, can't imagine how scary that must have been.

I've been putting off my smear but will make an appointment on Monday, I meant to do it today as I've also had some mid cycle spotting this month which I've never had before.

Lulu - I hope the results are good.

chonky · 30/05/2008 18:52

MrsC - hope you're recovering OK, that must have been a really tough time for you. Thanks for posting about it.

I recently had a smear done (9 years since my last ), prompted by bleeding after sex. Fortunately got the all clear, but it really gave me a kick up the backside to promise to myself that I would go religiously in future. I always used to find excuses for why I couldn't go to the docs; work, family etc. When I got the bleeding I kicked myself so hard for not having gone sooner.

Everyone, please go and get an appointment if you haven't already.

lulumama - hope the results are OK. Have your tried calling the docs? I was told 6-8 weeks, however they got results a lot earlier. I phoned for them.

lulumama · 30/05/2008 21:01

thanks. am sure it will be ok . will update when i get news ! thanks xx

bodiddly · 30/05/2008 21:08

lulumama I am going through the long waiting process as well! I had my colposcopy and biopsy 2 weeks ago ... got another 4-6 weeks to wait I guess!

cazboldy · 30/05/2008 21:10

I was putting it off, as I was cross that they hadn't done one when i had my coil fitted at the end of last year....... but i have now got an appt........for Fri the 13th

Swedes · 30/05/2008 21:14

You are all going to be shocked by my woosiness. I haven't been for a smear since 1996. I think I must have diplomatic immmunity as I have never been called. I have given birth to three children in the meantime and I'm not a GP changer.

BlueCornflower · 30/05/2008 21:17

Sorry, haven't read whole thread but wondered if anyone can answer my question. I need to book a smear but am TTC so am bit concerned how to manage dates. I think I ovulate late rather than early so should I try and book a test around day 10 (before we have 'tried')? I don't like the idea of getting pregnant and then having 'it' scraped out, or is that not how it works???

bodiddly · 30/05/2008 21:20

I think they say mid cycle is best but the main thing really is that you aren't actually bleeding as far as I am aware!

cazboldy · 30/05/2008 21:20

They only scrape the surface of your cervix - no further than that.... you should be fine
