Twitching

Hello

This is my first time posting on here and I am at my wits end. I have always suffered with health anxiety but right now I don’t know what to do with myself.

I have always twitched in my muscles over the years and occasionally worried, but then got on with it. Then back in April this year I lost the plot one day when my tongue started twitching on the tip. I was sure I had mnd after googling. I rushed to the doctor who wasn’t concerned and eventually I calmed down a little. More recently though I have been twitching all over. It’s the same as an eye twitch but it moves from my thighs, arm, shoulder, knees etc and I am back in the hole, terrified that I have a terrible illness. I saw my doctor again who reassured me that she felt there was nothing wrong apart from anxiety. She did a quick test of my reflexes, and got me doing some basic strength tests all of which were normal. She didn’t feel the need to refer me.
The other thing I have is that sometimes I go to swallow and for a split second can’t plus I have a weird tight feeling in my throat so I am linking this also to mnd.
When I had twitching a few years ago I got over it because I was much younger and know that mnd in younger people is very rare. But now I am 51 so haven’t got that excuse now.

I am sat here at work crying with fear. I just want to believe that my doc is correct and that it’s all anxiety and nothing more. I even went on a mnd board where they reassured me that the twitching was highly unlikely to be mnd.
Has anyone else experienced twitching like this?
Thanks for listening.
X

Datagirl - glad you have it back under control now. I know the googling makes it worse but it’s like a drug!

Isfuzzy - yeah I’ve had periods of time where I’ve not had them and then they start up. They are so random. I remember being on a beach once, supposedly relaxed and felt really strong twitching to the side of my knee. I looked down and watched my skin bubbling away which of course ruined that day on the beach for me!

I hear you, Flatcatt. Sometimes I think other people must notice it too.

Maybe I should look into a magnesium supplement.

CountreeGurl · 21/10/2020 22:54

I have a parent with MND. Twitching is not an early sign, it comes much later due to the muscle wasting, you'd have clinical weakness first. Everyone twitches, just ignore it

Midgeymoo12 · 21/10/2020 23:17

I have been experiencing this for the past year. I have self diagnosed benign fascicukation. It was triggered by burnout and a bender weekend away for a hen party. Made worse by convincing myself I had MND.

I found better sleep, a little meditation using headspace and cutting out caffeine helped.

Mine is much better but still comes and goes.

Keep a diary and understand it and you will start to feel better xxx

Shesingsshangrila · 21/10/2020 23:25

Has your gp done a blood test? I had this, muscles twitching, and a blood test revealed that I had very low b12. Since getting the injections, the twitching has stopped (and I feel a lot better generally!)

Flatcatt · 22/10/2020 11:14

Thanks again for your help everyone.
I really started to calm down but then this morning while at my desk I started getting really strong twitches on the side of my left thigh. Then when I looked down I could see the twitching through my trousers. This has sent me spiralling again.

I’ve not had blood tests, but I did have a batch done last year which were all normal.

Midgeymoo12 · 22/10/2020 12:13

I experience visible twitches too. Once I watched my thumb actively twitching and flexing and it was very strange. I also got subtle twitches of my eyelids and nose which were very annoying.

It sounds like benign fasciculation. Best to go to your GP for a check, but hopefully when anxiety levels settle they will lessen.

Someone explained to me it had taken months and years to get myself into a burnout and anxiety state so it would take months and years to get better.

Happyspud · 22/10/2020 12:16

Yep yep. Thought it was mnd but it was anxiety. The anxiety has come under control and no more twitching. Also note that sertraline can cause muscle twitches. It may well be that?

Flatcatt · 22/10/2020 12:41

Thanks both.

I have seen my GP a few times now. She says it’s anxiety.

The fact that I can see the twitching in my thigh through my trousers today is really scaring me v

Northernsoullover · 22/10/2020 14:55

@Flatcatt mine was clearly visible through my trousers too. That particular twitch lasted 3 days.

Flatcatt · 22/10/2020 15:03

Really Northernsoul lover? You aren’t just trying to make me feel better Smile
Thank you so much.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 22/10/2020 15:08

I remember my thumb twitching. It was very weird.

datagirl · 22/10/2020 16:09

Flatcatt

Try not to worry. I've had a twitching thigh today too. Clearly visible through my jeans! It always stops eventually.

Kodama361 · 22/10/2020 17:36

My twitching when I was anemic was always visible through my clothes too

Buttons4me · 22/10/2020 17:42

Ive been twitching for about 6 months my legs can twitch so much. My consultant says no one should twitch and he wants me to have tests.

Northernsoullover · 22/10/2020 20:35

@Flatcatt no I'm not. This was recently too Smile @Buttons4me there are definitely benign reasons for twitching but getting stuff ruled out is definitely worth doing and its due diligence on the part of your consultant to investigate it further.

Northernsoullover · 16/11/2020 23:37

I don't know if this thread will be picked up by anyone after all this time but I thought I would come back and update. I have carried on twitching up albeit reduced up until 3 days ago. 4 days ago I started on magnesium supplements and by the following day the twitching had stopped. I will never know if it had any effect that rapidly or if it resolved itself coincidentally.
Knowing my luck I might well wake up twitching again tomorrow Wink but it might be worth a shot if any of you are still suffering.

Flatcatt · 17/11/2020 20:38

That’s great news.
Hopefully it will continue to work.

Mine hasn’t been as bad, although I’ve been worrying about something else so it may be that I’m not focusing less on it🤔

glowingtwig · 27/01/2021 03:43

@Morgana7 I know this is a fairly old thread but would you mind sharing the tests that the neurologist did with you?
I've got tingling, pins and needles and muscle twitches in every part of my body it seems.

I'm worried about MS or MND too. Sad

Flatcatt · 27/01/2021 14:47

Hello
Sorry to hear you’re worried. It’s such a horrible thing to feel anxious about. I didn’t have any tests or referrals myself - just the GP who did a quick neuro test.
X

glowingtwig · 27/01/2021 14:57

@Flatcatt thank you SO much for replying. Would you mind telling me what they did and what the conclusions were? X

Northernsoullover · 27/01/2021 15:01

@glowingtwig I had to do lots of pushing against the GPS hands and they did something with a tuning fork iirc. It was quite thorough.

DinosaurDiana · 27/01/2021 15:02

My DH is medicated for anxiety. He has now developed two twitches and a cough when he is anxious.

Flatcatt · 27/01/2021 15:06

They did some basic strength tests and that was about it. They said it was Anxiety X

glowingtwig · 28/01/2021 15:13

Thanks everyone. I just seem to be picking up new symptoms about every hour... now it's a burning feeling in my mouth and inside my nose. Surely something like ms wouldn't add new things like this and other things subside.
