Gp surgery asked me to go to Gen Hospital for a blood test

This is such an unbelievable story. Not only can the nurses not do
blood tests (they hack you) but they actually ask you that if they are
successful if you can convey it to the hospital.
I doubt this is allowed

Are they asking you to attend the hospital for the blood test or asking you to attend the GP surgery for a blood test then to convey the sample to the hospital lab?

Justpassingtime1 · 07/10/2020 13:22

They asked me to go to the hospital for a routine blood test.
I refused due to Covid and also because a Gp surgery should really
be able to do blood tests.
Then they said If they did it at the surgery would I convey it to the
hospital? I could not believe my ears

Hospitals are very well protected and have good protocols for Covid hygiene. My 82-year-old immunosuppressed mother has them done every month at her local hospital.

StylishMummy · 07/10/2020 13:26

Plenty of GP surgeries don't do blood tests - you're being ridiculous Hmm

piglet81 · 07/10/2020 13:30

I’m sure the hospital will be fine - Covid cases are kept very separate from everyone else and infection control policies will be strict. And if the nurses at your surgery are so rubbish then surely it would be a more pleasant experience to have it done by the hospital phlebotomists anyway?

bloodywhitecat · 07/10/2020 13:33

I would imagine a practice nurse can take bloods if their competencies are up-to-date which will cost the practice money as will opting into the system for collecting samples. I think that. in some practices, it is more cost effective to send a patient needing blood tests.

LIZS · 07/10/2020 13:34

Dh always goes to hospital for his as his veins are hard to find and he bruises easily. Having spent a lot of time in our local hospital recently it feels much safer than doing a supermarket shop.

Badbadbunny · 07/10/2020 13:35

There's less and less point in having GP surgeries. Time they were scrapped if they're not even going to do blood tests.

Roselilly36 · 07/10/2020 13:36

I have routine bloods every 3mths, I have the choice of the hospital or GP practice for mine. I usually opt for GP practice, just because it’s closer.

0blio · 07/10/2020 13:37

I dont think you need to worry. Have a look at the setup at your hospital.

Ours now insists on an appointment and blood is taken in a separate part of the building. Only one patient is allowed in at a time and everyone wears a mask.

I felt very safe going for my blood test recently and my GP has never done them anyway.

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 07/10/2020 13:41

Eh?! My GP always sends patients to the Blood Clinic at the local hospital for blood tests. You get emailed / texted a form to take (so they know what they’re testing for) and then you call the surgery for the results a week later.

Really not complicated and everyone is COVID Precautioned up.

AldiAisleofCrap · 07/10/2020 13:44

Can you go to the drive through blood test?

NerrSnerr · 07/10/2020 13:45

There are loads of GPs that don't do blood clinics and send you to the clinic at the hospital.

The blood clinic will be organised well, they won't be asking you do go to a Covid ward. Probably the same chance of catching Covid than going to the doctors surgery.

earthtopluto · 07/10/2020 14:41

I always go to hospital for bloods. I don't think some people understand the pressure that GPs are under. If there's a blood clinic at a hospital that's designed for this exact reason, why wouldn't they send you there? You are probably more at risk of contracting covid in the supermarket than you are at a hospital. Just be glad that there's a service available to you to have your blood taken. And yes if you refuse to go to the hospital when that's the option they've given you then you should take the bloods there yourself.

SoddingWeddings · 07/10/2020 16:20

Our surgeries here are going the same thing. Just go to the hospital, where the trained nurses or phlebotomists will be and stop being a drama llama.

butterpuffed · 07/10/2020 19:09

An unbelievable story ? You couldn't believe your ears ?

That's rather melodramatic ~ you were offered you a blood test which you refused , they suggested a compromise and you don't like that either .

Goldensunnydays81 · 07/10/2020 19:21

I would rather go to the hospital as it is usually quicker and less painful.
Also it might be to do with them not having many blood samples to send so not wanting them to be hanging around

ForestbytheSea · 07/10/2020 19:29

I live rurally, and go to the doctor in the next village. I have to drive 25 mins to the hospital to get blood tests done. If I didn’t drive, I’d have to get a train and then a bus to get to the hospital.

MrsAvocet · 07/10/2020 19:37

Is it something that is time limited? Some tests need to be in the lab within a certain time after the sample has been taken, which obviously will be quicker if its done in the same location. We can get blood taken at our GP but there is only one transport per day to the lab, so the samples sit around in the surgery until then. Obviously if its something that needs to be sent urgently or needs to be processed quickly then that's no use so we get asked to go to the hospital. It is hardly the end of the world and I don't think that going to a clinic in the hospital is any more risky than going to the GPs.

MrMeSeeks · 07/10/2020 19:42

Load of gps wont do blood tests! They do hve other things to do...

Torvean32 · 08/10/2020 03:10

@Justpassingtime1

If the GP practice are being refused the transport to take samples to the hospital, who should take it? The practice manager, the pharmacist?? It's your blood, you're the safest to deluver it.

However if you'd listened in the first place your blood woild have been taken by the hospital. You knew better though....

Montybojangles · 08/10/2020 08:17

Some blood tests are time critical, and sitting Waiting for collection, and then in a specimen transport van while it trundles round dozens of surgeries and local clinics could make the sample untestable.
I don’t really understand why you are so against the idea of going to the hospital to get a test to be honest. I imagine there are a lot less nurse appointments these days, as time will be needed between patients for cleaning down clinic rooms. I can totally understand that if there are alternatives they would ask you to use them, so that their appointments can be utilised for things only they can do.

MoreCookiesPlease · 08/10/2020 08:37

Why is this so unbelievable? Plenty of GP surgeries do not offer blood tests. When they offered a compromise you're still being arsey. You sound so entitled.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 08/10/2020 08:40

‘Everyone wears a mask’ l wish😧

I had a hospital appointment yesterday. Loads of people (not staff) wearing below nose or not at all. Horrible.

DilysPrice · 08/10/2020 08:47

You’re much less likely to get your test lost or delayed if you get it done in hospital. I always get mine done there because there’s no faffing around booking an appointment with the practice nurse for the right time of day before the delivery run and then waiting because they’re running late. If I go to the hospital I can just walk in at a time of my choosing and be in and out in fifteen minutes.
That said, my local hospital is close to my work, so it’s fairly handy. If yours is in the next town and you don’t drive then I can see why you’d be cross.
