My daughter is two, and since Friday she has had a very bad stomach. Most days she had just been very frequent and very very sloppy (she is never very firm anyway). Yesterday she went 4 times in one hour. The CM has been very nice and has been looking after her (as all the other kids are at school / have it as well)

The thing is, she is also so sore and none of the cream I have are helping. She is so sore that she wont sit down, and she even stands for her food. She screams when we wipe her and begs us to stop as it is so sore.

My Q's are:

What magic creams haven't I tried? I have tried usual nappy rash stuff, the one beginning with a B and the yellow one beginning with an M (which smells really bad and usually works wonders)

What foods can I give her while she is getting better? She usually eats lots of fruit, dairy etc, what can I give her instead that will still be relatively healthy?

Many thanks. Poor soul, cant bear to see her sobbing anymore

Zinc and castor all always worked for us.

Bottom Butter from Waitrose smells yummy and is nice and natural.

Cut down on thigs that make you go.

Poor love.

Twinkie1 · 10/10/2007 12:39

DS gets this if he eats weetabix.

Do you give her anything really hgh fibre like that?

Hassled · 10/10/2007 12:40

Sudocreme is good, and bananas might slow things down a bit? TBH if she's that sore it's worth talking to your practice nurse or GP and seeing if they can recommend something. Poor kid.

tracyk · 10/10/2007 12:42

I find a good dollop of vaseline clears up a sore bottom overnight.
any kind of eggs should 'bind' her up. eggy bread, scrambled eggs, omlette etc.

ELF1981 · 10/10/2007 12:42

She usually has ready brek each morning for brekkie but has had toast / crumpets / cereal since Saturday.

She usually has a slice of cheese each day, but we haven't given her any in two days.

She usually has 2-3 small yoghurts a day, again, none since Sun.

No raisens, no bananas etc.

She has just had toast / pasta / sandwiches in the past few days, and even then, she doesn't eat much... she can manage chocolate fingers though

Is there any medicine that children can have wrt upset stomachs, or does it just have to run its course (five days seems like a lot to me, and she's terrible when she is poorly because she loses a fair bit of weight and its taken me ages to get her back to what she was before she was sick last time)

Boil up some pearl barley until it is really soft. Keep adding water.

Drain & keep the water & give it to her to drink. It will neutralise her system so her urine & poo isn't so acidic.

The water from boiled/steamed veg has the same effect.

Avoid anything too acidic. I would also try to avoid dairy too.

Fullers Earth Cream is good. Not sure where to get it tho, as an aunt got it for me. I think it was a independant chemist.

cheeset · 10/10/2007 12:43

Cream- Sudocreme, from any chemist, we ALL use this in our house fab Irish stuff.

Germoline which has a local anasthetic in it, I LIKE THIS ONE.

Hold back on the fruit, will make her go even more!

Don't use baby wipes, they sting like HELL ON BROKEN SKIN. i KNOW!

Maybe try her on foods which are binding like eggs?

Budababe · 10/10/2007 12:43

Chamomile tea bags in the bath should soothe.

LittleB · 10/10/2007 12:44

I'd take her to the drs, sounds like a long time for a 2 yr old to go with a bad tummy. Wouldn't worry too much about getting alot of food into her but make sure she has plenty to drink. My dd had this a few months ago, just before she was 2, I took her into A&E though as she was feverish too, but she was fine after a few days. They recommended diarolyte to drink, she wouldn't drink this but they said dilute fruit juice or water plain biscuits and plain toast would be fine. Lucozade and other sports drinks will also help give her sugars etc. I always used metanium when dd had a bad nappy rash (the yellow one!) You could use olive oil on cotton wool to clean her as its more gentle and removes the cream etc better, this is what they use with premature babies.
Hope she's better soon, poor poppet.

ELF1981 · 10/10/2007 12:45

Might have to get some bottom butter just for the smell as the one she has at the moment reeks!

I was going to take her to the drop in clinic tomorrow afternoon but thought they'd just roll their eyes at me and tell me to go home!

Oooh, I didn't realise eggs were good for stopping an upset stomach, I've always had to avoid them (and dairy) so might give her some egg tonight, she likes them.

sprilon spray is really for bed sores but it is a miracle worker it's about £7 for the can but I have been given on pescription before as one of my dds was a bit allergic to most creams!

It's zinc oxide & dimeticone spray

water repellent, non-irritant & protective according to the tin.

MeltingandScreamingIcarus · 10/10/2007 12:46

warm water and cotton wool to wipe.

Sudocreme good. Can you face letting her wee bottom air?

OrmIrian · 10/10/2007 12:47

Dilute tea tree oil is soothing.

My DS#1 used to react like this to milk - even a tiny amount - if he had been ill even with just a mild cold.

toomanyballs · 10/10/2007 12:47

Don't use baby wipes as they REALLY sting on sore skin. Cotton wool/soft flannel and water or quick wash in bath/shower. Make sure you dry well.

Also when mine have really upset tummies I try not to feed them ( water and toast) as sometimes I feel feeding them keeps the bug going. I know its difficult but seem to sort mine out

5 days is a long time to be poorly, go to GP. You can get stuff from the chemist to help.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 10/10/2007 12:48

I would give her a weak dose of diahoralite (sp?) to dry it up if it has benn going on that long.
I was advised by doc to do this with ds1 who is 2. he didnt seem too interested in how long it had been going on. all he offered was to send a stool sample away.

ELF1981 · 10/10/2007 12:51

We have been letting her bottom air during the evenings (she still wont sit down) but then she cries for us to put her nappy on.

I will take her to the drop in clinic tomorrow (you usually get to see a doctor for the child with no appointment) and I will talk to them about this.

She is fine within herself, happily playing (but not sitting) during the day / evening (she must have worn out legs though!) it is just when she has gone in her nappy & when being cleaned that she is getting upset / wound up.

She had been asking us not to wipe for a few weeks and I thought it might be a phase she was going through, but now with the sores, I am wondering if there is something wrong rather than her just learning a new trick so to speak.

My DD had exactly the same problem, and we tried metanium which didn;t seem to work really, although I did use it with nappies. best thing seemed to be getting air to it, but accept this isn;t always practical, especially if you like your carpets iykwim!

My GP told me to cut out dairy, and move her on to soya milk for a couple of weeks. Not great in long term though. The most natural soya milk you can get is bonsoy. This REALLY helped DD.

Also calpol to take the pain away. Poor thing, DD was in a really bad way.

Beenleigh · 10/10/2007 12:55

oh yes, and we just had mini showers whenever needed rather than wipes.

cheeset · 10/10/2007 12:56

I advised eggs, although binding, not sure about it in this situation so please check.

I agree with toomanyballs, feed toast and water. I have always done this as was told would keep the bugs going otherwise.

ELF1981 · 10/10/2007 12:57

Thank you all for your advice.

Unfortunately got to get back to work now so I am not ignoring anybody who posts after this, just wont be able to answer til after work!

Shall keep you updated on how she has been. Usually at the point where I'm posting on mumsnet, she has made an amazing recovery as she did when I worried that she'd not eating ANYTHING in a week and the day I posted, she was a little piggy at the childminders she nearly cleared the cupboards

Whimsy · 10/10/2007 12:59

For sore bottom Metanium mixed with olive oil into a paste, works like magic on my boys.

Brangelina · 10/10/2007 13:01

Baths with just a drop of calendula or sweet almond oil, or even rice starch (boil up sticky rice and add the water to the bathwater) help with calming the pain and healing.

Foodwise, white rice is a good "bunger", better than egg as it has no inflammatory properties whatsoever. I'd also avoid dairy like the plague.

CarGirl · 10/10/2007 13:02

Can I just emphasise again that the sprilon spray worked when all else had failed I think it's because it a wee-proof water repellent.

Poor lamb, I've been in your situation an it was horrific.

kindersurprise · 10/10/2007 13:54

Our DCs bums love this. I used it when DS had salmonella and was pooing several times an hour.

Hope she is better soon.
