is pizza bad to eat?

fedda · 05/10/2007 22:00

My DH read that pizza is among 10 worst foods and he stopped eating it because of that. He is happy though to have steak and kidney pie or pudding and toad in the hole. To my mind all of these foods are fattening and i can't understand why pizza is worst then toad in the hole. Would anyone please tell me whether pizza is a no, no and whether it's worse then the foods I've mentioned? Ta very much.

bread, cheese and veg - hardly exceptional compatitavley

Blondilocks · 05/10/2007 22:02

I suppose the cheese etc could make it bad ... not sure about the science of it but in my opinion all would be bad if eaten all the time, but ok occasionally.

BecauseImWereWolfit · 05/10/2007 22:04

I think the answer, sadly, is 'it depends'. How do you define 'worst foods'?

At its best, it's just bread with tomatoes and a little bit of cheese with a few veg/some meet/fish.

However, it can be high in calories and/or fat - and it's also high in carbohydrate.

As part of a balanced diet, though, it's hardly going to kill you!

TotalChaos · 05/10/2007 22:04

I think it's not so great if you have loads of fatty stuff on top - adding loads of meet and cheese and having a deep pan one. But a veg one, or one that is mostly say chicken and tomato is OK.

BecauseImWereWolfit · 05/10/2007 22:05

meet? meat, of course!

lomondgal · 05/10/2007 22:05

Pizza is quite high in fat but so are the other things you mentioned, you could try making home made pizzas with less or low fat cheese.

shrooms · 05/10/2007 22:55

Homemade pizzas are good for you!

Wholewheat flour with baking powder and bicarb to make quick base. Roll out thin.

Top with lashings of marinara sauce, galic, onions, olives, sweetcorn ect. And I use soya cheese, which is low fat. Or no cheese, but cashews and some marinaded tofu/ seiten.
This should be in the recipes section, but needs must!

ToadieG1 · 05/10/2007 22:57

I don't think pizza is pizza without cheese on, now and again won't hurt. Everything in moderation.

FrayedKnot · 05/10/2007 23:02

When you say "bad" do you mean fattening?

If he is trying to lose weight then yes, pizza is high in fat becuase cheese is high in fat.

Otherwise, I cna;t quite see why it would be bad.

CastsSpellsWitchySpells · 05/10/2007 23:04

Well Franny is a food guru, and she told me that homemade pizza is a perfectly good breakfast, so make it yourself and you're laughing (and it's much nicer home made).

professorplum · 05/10/2007 23:06

Some pizzas have loads of salt, almost as much as a adult daily allowance. I would have thought that this was more of a health risk than high fat.

CastsSpellsWitchySpells · 05/10/2007 23:07

Where did your dh read this btw fedda, and what were the other 9?

fedda · 06/10/2007 00:13

It was posted some time ago on AOL front page. I can only remember pizza, donits, mayonaise and peanut butter as the worst foods to eat for your health. I just don't understand why. May be donuts but surely the rest is okay occasionaly. I personally like pizza in Pizza Express or Zizis where they make it in front of us and it's very tasty. My DH completely stoped all the mentioned foods because of the risk for health but he eats occasionally steak and kidney pie and toad in a hole so I can't understand how these foods are better. Yes, I cook myself steak and kedney pie but i use ready made puff pastry which he adores. How can that be better then pizza?

Can only think because of the saturated fat in the cheese??

But all things in moderation and all that. A diet consisting solely of pizza wouldn't be too good for you obviously but now and again won't harm you.

LyraSilvertongue · 06/10/2007 00:23

Surely pizza can't be worse than a cheese and tomato sandwich. Very similar ingredients...

fedda · 06/10/2007 21:08

That's what I thought.

MaryAnnSingletomb · 06/10/2007 21:17

if you ate it everyday then not good - but in moderation fine, in my opinion - the tomatoes v good for you !

fedda · 06/10/2007 21:46

I have pizza on rare occasions as i'm desparately trying to make my tummy look normal and my didgesting system is rubbish but i can't understand why pizza should be one of the worst foods. may be it was just not thought through. I mean , one day we read that coffee is bad, then it's good, tea is bad, then good, the same with tomatoes, lemons, bread and next thing Iknow we should stay clear of milk, espessially cow's milk from the age of 3. i'm not even sure that water is so good that I need to forse 2 littres on me every day and even have more if i have a cup od tea or coffee. Sometimes i think it's all rubbish and we just need to eat everything in moderation but part of me wonders whether it's true and milk is like a glue and it damages our body and pizza is so bad that one slice will be a mistake to eat and grilling can be damaging to althoug in some books they suggest that grilling is healthy. What do you think?

Any processed food is bad for you if you eat too much of it. Shop-bought pizzas are mostly white processed flour. The other ingredients are not bad in themselves but there is a lot of salt, food-colorings etc in there. Read the ingredients list, if you have to draw breath before you get to the end of it, it's bad for you! Make your own.
If you have problems with your digestion you really need to cut out white flour foods. See a good nutritionist for advice. HTH

fedda · 06/10/2007 22:30

I don't eat shop bought pizzas but i eat pizza sometimes in Pizza Express. I can't imagine asking them for ingredients. Thank you for your advice to see a natritionist.

Thick bases and extra cheese = quite bad if you eat a whole one to yourself.

Thin base, not too much cheese and some extra tomato, onion, pineapple, peppers etc, eat half with some salad = really quite good.

edam · 06/10/2007 22:42

fedda, you do not need 2L of water a day on top of any other drinks!

edam · 06/10/2007 22:46

Look here for sensible advice: Food Standards Agency

Anyone can call themselves a nutritionist, btw, you are better off using the very boring but sensible advice from the FSA/eatwell than paying someone a lot of money for what can be dodgy info.

fedda · 06/10/2007 23:04

that's a very good site, thank you. I feel better now.
