I am obsessing about my 18mo daughters weight (again) - had her weighed today, at baby clinic after a 5 month hiatus. She is now 16.4 kg - to give this context a 3yo around the 91st percentile would be expected to weigh this much!!

I think my 3 yo son only weighs a little more than this (he has consistently been on 98%).

Not sure of her current height but she is wearing 3-4 yo clothes (with legs rolled up etc.) - which is a bloody nightmare as she is also mainly in cloth nappies making her bum unfeasibly large and her clothes are simply not cut for cloth iykwim!!!

Am I breeding some amazonian woman here - she is so healthy and lovely and active - she is still bf'ing and wants to feed at night quite frequently at the mo. and several times a day. I give her (mainly) healthy food.

Should I worry or just burn those damnable charts?

Also where are the clothes for big cloth wearing babies??? I am fed up of squeezing her into next jeans!!! Can't find decent non-pink and yucky dungarees (though do do most of cloths buying at carboot sales so choice is limited)...

Wow! Well my ds is three next month, and he weighs a whole kilo lighter. He's tall, strong, and slender. He's on the 75th centile for both height and weight, so he's no slouch.

No need to worry ... I'm sure it'll all settle down ... but WOW

bigmouthstrikesagain · 05/10/2007 19:01

bumping this in case anyone here tonight has a similarly huge dc???

now dh is saying he is concerned about how big she is going to be! This is so unfair we would not be anxious if she was a he... double standards I never thought I would be guilty of them.

I have enormous children too, Bigmouth. I do remember DD1 weighed 10 kilos at 8 months, and was off the scale for height. She is now just 9, weighs 44 kg and is just under 5ft tall. She looks chunky, but her weight/height ratio are fine according to the doctor and the red book. She takes size 5 shoes, and is in clothes for a 12 year old. I seriously worry about what she is going to wear next year as children's clothes don't come up much bigger. She is the tallest in her year, as is DD2, who is 6 and wears clothes for a 9 year old. They both eat well and are active, and have a good, varied diet. I was a huge child, but when I got to around 11, everyone else shot up and overtook me - at 5' 8", I'm not particulary short, but not overly tall either. I shouldn't worry.

Can I say that some girls' mothers are bigger than other girls' mothers? Or would that just be rude?

bigmouthstrikesagain · 05/10/2007 22:11

Thank you MrsS - I know the other children will catch up by the teen years... I was always the tallest in class till puberty. But I was no where near as big as dd when I was a toddler. I am 5'8" now too.

I think I do need to chill, but in the absense of anything really serious - I am good at finding something to worry me...

Toothyboy - well I did kind of ask for that

DD went though an enormous growth spurt at 2.5 years until.. well it's still going really but has slowed down recently.
She is now nearly 6 and wears clothes for a 8-9 year old and has size 12.5 feet. It has been difficult not to worry about her and as you say if she were a boy I may have worried less. I'm 5'7 and DH is 6'2" so we weren't expecting petite children, but I did get sick of people commenting on her size and assuming we were over feeding her.
DS on the other hand shows no sign of giant-ism and could be described as slight. I don't really know where I'm going with this post except to say don't fret and worry, keep her healthy and active and stop buying jeans in Next as they are too small on the waist and too long in the leg. Also remember she is only a baby and may become a tiny little ballerina type in a year and if not she will still be your gorgeous girl.

Flamesparrow · 05/10/2007 22:27

Cut 4 Cloth or H&M for clothes (Oh and just shove her in skirts, its easier )

She'll settle down. It'll be fine. Even if she is giant woman forever - just feed her healthily (as you seem to be) and she'll be ok

BMSA
I can't help with the bigger clothes thing, but I can sympathise with your situation, albeit from the opposite end of the spectrum. My dd2 is nearly 5 and weighs 15kg. She is above average height and so looks like a string bean. I have had people ask 'is she all right?', try to surrupticiously give her food, and gently try to question me as to whether I actually feed her or not...

Now, my dd2 is healthy and very active. Just built in a way that people notice and feel uncomfortable with sometimes. I used to dislike going swimming with her because she looked so skinny (not skeletal, just tiny).

However, I can't change it. She is as she is. Clothes are a problem (her waist is 18month-old size), but beyond that I don't think about it anymore. Who knows how she may change as she grows? If she doesn't, well, that just shows she is just as she should be. The important thing is that she is happy and healthy...

Not sure if that helped or not?!

bigmouthstrikesagain · 05/10/2007 23:06

thank you for messages - i always do look out for h&m clothes second hand. No shop near enough for regular visits. I much prefer to see before i buy because sizing alone does not tell me if something will fit.

Kate your dd does sound like the opp to mine - i do think we have to look at our families to tell us what is 'normal' for our kids. But when dd falls asleep on me and i have to carry her any distance i fervently wish that 'normal' was a little bit lighter. Babywearing was never going to work for me long term!

But this does nothing to change my opinion that she is my beautiful little girl, and if she asks me one day (as i asked my mum) 'mummy am i delicate?' - i will smile and think of something to say ... (better ask my mum what she said!)

my dd is 4 next month and although slim she is same height as the kids two years above her at school and has size 11 feet

bigmouthstrikesagain · 05/10/2007 23:17

choc peanut your dd sounds like my ds - he was 3 in aug and is in 5yo clothes. He is a different build to dd. Easier to buy clothes for he is a perfect next boy - much as i hate the place

hello spin - thank you for replying - your dc's are lovely

I do worry about the labelling - esp for dd and I get fed up having to explain how old my dc's are. DD is very heavy there is no getting away from it but her fantastic health, and strength reassures me. I should stopobsessingand get o bed! sorry one handed typing.

I have a pic on my profile of her this summer.
