Well sort of emergency in as much as saw the consultant yeaterday hwo said she had never seen such uge tonsils and adenoids.Described the risks and reluctance to operate but would wait to hear.

Anyway, got a call today saying doc had reviewed the case and decided that it was a relatively urgent case.

DD goes in on Tues and is only 2.4-any advice of what to expect????????

Hi Gingeme and Aznerak..saw the new consultant on Thursday and have a new op date for the 6th....so count down till then.Hope your children are well, Gingeme how is your little one getting on now, its been a good two weeks so hopefully all better.

gingeme · 29/10/2007 22:28

Dad12 thats my birthday 6th November hope its a good day for your ds too.
Yeah my ds is doing great thanks. His tonsils are a distant memory. I must say though, and his Grandad noticed at the weekend, his voice seems to have changed pitch and also seems a little louder. Guess its because hes got more room in his throat now for his voice to come out.
Good luck with everything. Ill pop in soon

aznerak · 30/10/2007 06:55

Hi gingeme. Glad your ds is doing well. Great news dad12 about the date - 8 days before ours!
Which hospital are you going to again?
My dd still has a cold but there are still 2 weeks to go so fingers crossed it will have finally gone by then!
Keep me posted please!

paws4thought · 30/10/2007 08:46

Hi - my dd had hers out a month before her second birthday and i have to say it was the best thing that could have happened. it has changed her life completely. Like you - it was an emergency she was often in hospital and many times taken in by ambulance because she had stopped brething because of the damn things. Please try not to worry - when they are that huge and infected its the best thing to do.

Dad12 · 30/10/2007 09:32

Hi Gingeme..great to hear your DS is back on form and interesting to hear about his voice as well..did you once mention you were expecting at the moment? if so I hope that is going as well as possible..Thanks paws4thought for your kind words, how was your DD after her op? Aznerak, we are having it done at the Portland, which actually is a real pain as there is no parking there and quite a distance from where we live in Mitcham. Our DS is full of beans at the moment, nights he is still restless and mouth breathing..my fav time is when he wakes up and still, after what I thought was a bad night, he is all cheery and smiles and asks me if it is a sunny day?

paws4thought · 30/10/2007 10:03

Hi - she was great straight after - an hour after the op and she ate a whole sandwich, a packet of crisps and a drank a carton of apple juice (more than she would normally eat!!) she was running about and happy as larry so we were able to go home the next day. We had to go back in a 2 days later for a week because she caught an infection but the doctors and nurses handled it brilliantly and to be honest it was worth the trouble. Good luck and let me know how you get on.

aznerak · 04/11/2007 14:29

Hi Dad12
All set for Tuesday?
Can't believe it but dd has woken up with another stinking cold this morning. She is due to have her op next Wed (14th) so hope it will have gone by then?
Please let me know how it goes - I am already a bag of nerves and it is still 10 days off!

Good luck - will be thinking of you

Dad12 · 05/11/2007 10:09

Hi Aznerak...unbelievably have had it cancelled again!! Last three days DS has been sick. Last Friday he started saying he had tummy ache..this was a bit weird as he has never said this before, then he was sick...we thought maybe it was wind or something but since then he has ben sick several more times and very tired, just flopped out on the sofa. He manages a bowl of porrige in the morning but then throws up after any lunch. We have left calling the consultant till this morning but have decided he needs feeding up and getting this out of his system before ang op with a GA. Its really difficult in the winter because they seem to be going down with coughs and colds +viruses..but I don't think they want to operate on the little ones if trhey are not pretty much on top form. So another week of stress, not to mention telling work I will be in now, rescheduling time off work the following week if the consultant has a space....beginning to wonder if we are being told something here...

gingeme · 05/11/2007 20:22

Hi only me. Oh Dad12 your poor ds. How is he today? Realy hope hes on the mend soon. What age do you teach?
aznerak tis the season for coughs and colds unfortunately. My ds has a horrible tickly cough at the moment. Doesnt seem to be as bad as when he had his tonsils though. We dont have to worry about it turning into tonsilitis.
Good luck. xxx

aznerak · 05/11/2007 22:38

Oh no.......nightmare.

I do hope he's better soon and you get another date soon.

Fingers crossed my dd is better in time - I will keep you posted.

xx

Hi to all, really nice you keep in touch..my little one is ok, sick again last night after dinner but he held down breakfast and lunch. He's pretty chirpy but seems to be very tired come early evening. Its a shame about the op..we were so hyped up for it.. again! The consultant was fine about it, she said it was much better they were on top form and has a slot for us next Tuesday..so lets see how the week goes. winter is always such hard work for us, all the viruses going around..Aznerak, I hope your little one is feeling better, people I know seem a bit surprised I get so stressed when my DS has a cold but for kids like ours with the big tonsils and blocked airways, every wheezed out breath at night is a worry. Best wishes to you too Gingeme, hope the babe inside is not kicking too much and the little one who had the op. is making all the positive improvements people talk about after this kind of op. I teach teenagers mostly, full on ofsted inspection today!!

gingeme · 06/11/2007 21:53

Dad12 everything crossed for next Tuesday. Teens oh you are a brave man. I have a one year old too so its pretty full on here most of the time. I like it that way though busy busy busy. My 3 year old is pretty poorly at the moment. He has a horrid tickly cough. Just lots to drink and Calpol every 4 hours.
Well take vare and keep well. xx

aznerak · 07/11/2007 18:13

Cannot believe it! Just had a call from the hospital to cancel dd's operation next Wed as the surgeon will be busy attending an audit meeting instead

So, it has been rescheduled for 6th Dec, just 3 days before her 3rd birthday.

I am not at all happy that such meetings take priority over patients.

Luckily I hadn't planned a party just in case. It is more the principle. She is marked down as a very urgent case yet an audit meeting is deemed more important.

How long did your dd feel rough for? How old was she at the time of the op? How long do you have to keep them away from others for?

Thanks for your concern too!

boocha · 07/11/2007 22:07

I have been reading this thread with interest for a while as my son was scheduled to have his tonsils and adenoids removed plus possible grommits, he is 4.
His op was cancelled twice so I know all about how frustrating that is!!
Anyway he had the op last wednesday (31st oct)They told us on the day that he might not get his adenoids removed unless they were too large, the surgeon said he would make the decision once he saw them, likewise the grommits, no glue ear no grommits.
ds ended up with his tonsils and adenoids removed and a grommit in his right ear.
This thread has provided some great advice to us. Recovery wise ds has been really good, it is upsetting when they come round after and it took a good while for him to stop crying, we took a little present in to hospital and this did the trick with calming him down!!
He hasnt been sick at all post op. He was given ice cream after op (2 little bowls!) then toast and we took some of his favourite snacks in for him to eat. He really surprised us with the amounts of food he has been eating as he is not usually a good eater. I think the trick to a speedy recovery is food and drink little and often and to keep on top of pain relief. We were sent home with calpol, codiene and diflofenic.I have stopped the codiene and diflofenic now and am giving him calpol and nurofen alternately.
He is waking once during the night every night since the op, but after some calpol goes straight back to sleep, am hoping this will stop soon!
We were told to keep him off school for 2 weeks and I have yet to take him out . He is getting better every day and I was dreading him having this op but from my point of view it has been nowhere as terrible as I thought!
Ds has a very noticable speech delay and has had severe glue ear since 18 months old,he has a statement of educational needs for school, we have tried everything to clear his glue ear. He always has a cold and is very rarely healthy so we are hoping that the op might make a difference even if only slight. Surgeon said his adenoids and tonsils were very large and his right ear full of wax. so here hoping!
Anyway, sorry for rambling and good luck to anybody whose ds/dd is having the op.

Dad12 · 08/11/2007 09:40

Took my little boy to the doctor on Tuesday evening, he was just wiped out when I got home, no temp but he had been sick again. Doctor said he had tonsilitis,(!)could see pus at the back, the tummy pains my son kept mentioning were because glands can extend down to the tummy (not sure about that...)anyway straight back on the amoxycillion...after two doses, eg Wed. morning he was a diffiferent child, eating like a horse, full of energy and chatting so much more that I have heard before...last night he would'nt go to sleep though, like he had had Red Bull or something, normally he's asleep by 8.0, but I was still trying by 10.30..lots of crying..all very weird (maybe the sugar in the meds).Anyway, see how he is later today. Hospital say we can do the op. next Tuesday if we feel he is up to it or wait till following week. Thanks Boocha for telling us about your son, its really so reassuring to hear about these experiences. I don't really know lots of mums so can't talk to anyone I know about it. Has there been any spot bleeding you have noticed ? Wishing you both the very best. Aznerak, this must be so draining for you, an 'audit meeting'..thats not a reason its just rude...Gingeme, thanks for keeping in touch..very best wishes.

Hi everyone

Dad12 - have you had it done yet? How was it? We are still on countdown to 6th Dec, assuming the surgeon doesn't have another meeting to attend! Poor DD is in the wars, she tripped and fell on Monday and knocked a front tooth clean out - so that meant a trip to A&E but she was really brave and kept telling the doctor that she'd be a big girl as soon as her tonsils come out as then she'll be able to eat properly and will grow quickly!

Keep me posted if you get the chance dad12

Haven't read other replies so sorry in advance if i repeat anyting already said.

My dd had her adenoids out 4 weeks ago,she only went in for grommets but they looked had her adenoids at the same time, said they were enlarged and whipped them out.

There were 5 kids in total having the same op,apart from a boy of 2 having tonsillectomy aswell, they were all kept in overnight and discharged the next morning-all except my daughter that is!
d.d was complaining of sore throat and was generally unwell in herself so they kept her in another night.

On our way home the next day her nose srated to bleed terribly,we couldn't stop the bleeding so we took her straight back to hospital, they checked her bloods and said she had caught an infection so she had to to go on an I.V drip.

It took a good 2 weeks to get her back to normal, eating again and back to school but now she is absolutely fine.

I kept in touch with 3 out of the 4 other kids and only my dd has had problems so it must be rare.

looking at the advice/discharge sheet they generally reccomend-

3 days indoors, away from other children if poss
a further 7 days off school(won't apply to you)
any bleeding from nose of throat MUST be checked out
