have had ongoing asthma problems. Today she has been quite bad so took her to walk in centre tonight who listened to her chest and said todays is viral chest is clear etc despite tugging. She has just woken up and cant catch her breath. Have brought her down and she is on my knee and have given her inhaler etc a few times and seems to be easing now.She was really upset so that possibly made it worse. Question is do I take her to a+e or do I just watch her.

How old is she? Are the inhalers working?

gigglewitch · 04/10/2007 22:11

how old? if u are worried go to A&E

StarryStarryNight · 04/10/2007 22:12

I know you said it is easing, but do you in general feel that the inhalers are working?

I have gone through the whole asthma rigmarole with my youngest.

omeN666 · 04/10/2007 22:13

21months..has been on and off since she was 3mths..spent every couple of weeks at hospital drs etc with her in first year but have had time off since march

And she has an asthma diagnosis and the inhalers are working? Do you use both the brown and the blue?

omeN666 · 04/10/2007 22:14

inhalers have helped with the complete tugging but she is still breathing really quickly and working hard if that makes sense

I know what you mean. Does she have a temperature?

omeN666 · 04/10/2007 22:15

they still refuse to give her steroid inhaler until she is 2 so just blue one. Think thats why I am tempted to go to a+e aswell to say look she bloody needs them

omeN666 · 04/10/2007 22:16

Mine got the preventer (brown) at 12 months.

Turns out he does not have Asthma though, he has Laryngomalacia,(a floppy larynx), it flattens when he lies down, so gets asthma attack like symptoms. But because he has had so many chest infections his bronchis are in a state of slight infection, so he gets very noisy and chesty when he has a viral infection. My doctor always told me that unless he had a temperature no need to get him to the a&e as long as he could still breathe relatively easily after giving inhaler.

If you are worried, you should go.

Does her sleeping position matter at all? (Mine sleeps better on his tummy, keeps his airways open)

StarryStarryNight · 04/10/2007 22:20

Her oxygen levels were at 96/97?

ledodgy · 04/10/2007 22:22

Take her Nemo that's what Jack was like last time and they kept him in because even though his sats were reasonable as he was working so hard breathing they were worried they wouldn't stay reasonable iyswim.

StarryStarryNight · 04/10/2007 22:23

If her oxygen were that low, I am surprised they just sent you home?

emkana · 04/10/2007 22:24

96/97 isn't low though is it?

emkana · 04/10/2007 22:25

I'll never understand why they won't give her a steroid inhaler...

How is she now?

stressteddy · 04/10/2007 22:26

Lie her on her side and put her arm that's nearest the ceiling above her head resting on the side of her head. Hope that makes sense. It opens the airways and helps breathing. Do hope you and dd are ok. It's horrid isn't it?
Love to you both

gigglewitch · 04/10/2007 22:28

is it u nemo? if so, headf for ormskirk not whiston!! my DS & DD have had fab asthma treatment at OGH and brown inhalers from 6mo.

Elibean · 04/10/2007 22:29

Yes, how is she? Hope better?

Starry, my youngest dd has Laryngomalacia (and was extremely ill with RSV at 4 weeks as a result) and also sleeps/breathes better on her front - but my eldest has mild asthma (so far only during chest infection/viruses) and sleeps/breathes better on her back.

ledodgy · 05/10/2007 15:36

The advice I was given was that if the inhalers didn't hold for 2 hours, then it's a definite A&E job.

Your DD might have been clear earlier in the day, but could develop easily develop a sudden wheeze - that's what my DD was like at that age. The earlier you take her to A&E, the quicker they can start treating her - she will recover much more quickly and have less invasive treatment if she is not too sick going in.

As for SATs - our hospital will discharge on 96% but the breathing rate also has to be below 30. They send you home with prednisilone.

scienceteacher · 05/10/2007 17:18

Just read through the rest of the thread - glad to see you took her in.

If it's any consolation, my DD was in an out of hospital from about 18 months to 4.5 years, with a 'viral wheeze'. She's been clear for a year now.

ledodgy · 05/10/2007 17:20

Aww I hope she gets out tommorrow.
