have had ongoing asthma problems. Today she has been quite bad so took her to walk in centre tonight who listened to her chest and said todays is viral chest is clear etc despite tugging. She has just woken up and cant catch her breath. Have brought her down and she is on my knee and have given her inhaler etc a few times and seems to be easing now.She was really upset so that possibly made it worse. Question is do I take her to a+e or do I just watch her.

thanks ledodgy and scienceteacher. She has been discharged in past with prednisilone but they keep umming and ahhing about pneumonia even though she had 2 chest xrays in past 24hrs, they were looking to do another one tommorow. She is soo fed up and everytime someone comes into the room she is screaming because they are going to touch her etc.

Nemo, Dd2 was exactly like your dd and a doctor in hospital after she had pneumonia refused to give her a brown inhaler and I was gutted because I knew we'd be back there agin in a few weeks without it.

In the end I went to the asthma nurse at our surgery and after asking me lots of questions about dd, and how often we needed to give her the blue inhaler, she said it was madness that they were letting dd struggle on, and I came away with the brown inhaler that day and it worked wonders.

I do not understand the medics reluctance to prescribe it when it is so obviously needed. It took me 14mths and god knows how many hospital visits to get dd diagnosed as asthmatic and given a blue inhaler, and then another 7 mths, several hospital visits and a weeks stay with pneumonia before we got the brown one, which is absolutly ridiculous.

I hope dd is better soon

What I don't understand is the differences in different hospitals? Ds was first given a brown inhaler at 4 (!) months FGS!

omeN666 · 05/10/2007 20:09

its madness emkana, as you know I have struggled with this from DD1 being 3mths old and just dont feel like we are getting anywhere. What puzzles me is that half the nurses also seem flumoxed as to why she doesnt have a preventor inhaler
Its not like I can physically write the prescription myself so hands are still tied.

Do they give you any reasons though? Have you said to them that you know for a fact that other small babies are being prescribed it?

(Sorry, not attacking you, it's just so exasperating... Ds is on the purple inhaler now and I really feel it has made a difference, touch wood)

The gp says he will wait until she is 2 unless the hospital says otherwise, hospital dont give any reason they just give her a course of steroids

I think you need to get a second opinion Nemo, can you book an appointment with a different GP?. Although there may be some risk associated with using a preventer from an early age, there is a bigger risk not to use one considering the circumstances.

andiem · 05/10/2007 21:11

ome take this to your gp it is the national guidance on the drug management of asthma refer them to page 28 she can be on a preventer and should be

I think u have a crazy situation! my DS had blue inhaler at 4 weeks old and brown at 4 months, DD had both green and brown when she first developed symptoms and got kept in hosp at 5 mo. they increased her brown inhaler twice before her first b-day, but since then has stayed the same & done the job beautifully.

Why on earth won't they sort it til she is 2?? go elsewhere!!

alibobins · 06/10/2007 10:24

Hope she is better and you are on your way home.

My ds was discharged from hospital yesterday after being admitted wednesday night

I've posted on your threads before that ds has had steroid inhalors since he was a few months old. To be honest I think the prednisolone may have more long term side effects than a steriod inhalor. But then again I could be wrong

omeN666 · 06/10/2007 11:04

wooo hooo Dh just walked in with DD1, course of antibiotics, prednisolone and best of all..A PREVENTER INHALER
