DP in hospital found a growth on his kidney

DP has had trouble with waking up in the night for 2 years or so. He’s been to see his GP and had prostate tests, decided it was an enlarged prostate. PSA levels were fine. He’s 55 next month.

Last week at work his urine was bright red. He went to A & E and was examined, bloods done etc and dr said it’s probably a burst blood vessel in his bladder and booked him in for a CT scan.

Yesterday he woke up to peeing bright red blood again, went to work but then began to feel excruciating pain in his back so his colleague took him to A & E. CT scan shows a small growth on his kidney.

The dr reckons it’s been there for 5 years. They’ve admitted him and are doing further tests today. I saw him briefly last night after dropping him some things off. He looked awful but had been given morphine. He says there’s a possibility they will remove his kidney.

He’s been well in himself. No weight loss, eating well. Tired sometimes but when you wake 2/3 times a might to wee that’s expected.

He’s thinking the worst as the majority of his family have had cancer. His mum died in her fifties, he was only 18.

I’m so worried. We’ve only been together 6 years and I’m planning on another 20 years with him at least.

2020 is just the shittiest year

Oh that makes it very hard for you. Does he not get sick pay? (maybe s/e?)

If he is employed, his GP would sign him off until he is fit for work.

BG2015 · 18/09/2020 21:39

DP spoke to the consultant yesterday. The tumour was cancerous but was contained within his kidney.

No further treatment at this time is needed - check up scan in 6 months. It's a brilliant outcome

Oh I have been wondering how he was- what a relief! It's a year since my DH had his op. First CAT scan in March was fine. Second one is next week- fingers crossed! Then I think it goes to ultrasounds.

IslandLulu · 18/09/2020 22:26

Great news, OP SmileSmileSmile

DrDavidBanner · 18/09/2020 22:26

I'm glad hes getting better BG2015. My DH is going in tomorrow for a partial kidney removal under Mr Golash for a tumor that they're not yet sure id its malignant or benign. It was spotted during a routine wellman blood test and follow up scan.
We're very nervous but juat want it done now so we can find out what comes next. Hopefully just recovery.
It will be hard that I won't be able to visit him so I hope he will be home soon.

BG2015 · 19/09/2020 11:41

DrDavid Mr Golash and his team were amazing! Really can't fault them and Stoke Royal! Just difficult not being able to visit.

My DP is doing so well, just can't believe how well he's recovered. He was told 98% chance that the tumour would be cancerous.

I hope your DH goes on ok. Please keep us updated.

DrDavidBanner · 19/09/2020 15:32

Wow 98% that's such a great recovery.

It is difficult not being able to be there. I've just called the hospital and they say he's in recovery but I couldn't get through. I'll try again in an hour, hopefully he'll be in the ward by then.

BG2015 · 19/09/2020 16:32

My DP was out the next day.
Don't think he realised how hard it would be at first. He struggled getting up off the sofa and in and out of bed. Luckily I was off work so could help him. But by the second week he was finding everything much easier.

Has he had his op through key hole?

OP posts:
DrDavidBanner · 19/09/2020 16:43

He's had keyhole. I've just spoken to him!

He sounds suprisingly well, they recon he'll be out Monday/Tuesday depending on how he responds, but it was great to hear from him Smile

BG2015 · 19/09/2020 18:28

It is horrible isn't it. Hope he recovers well.

We could start a Stoke kidney group Smile

Thank you @BG2015

Ha, yes we could Smile

Fluffycloudland77 · 19/09/2020 19:22

That is a brilliant result for you.

goose1964 · 19/09/2020 20:30

My gran had kidney cancer and her doctor told she was likely to die of old age before she died of cancer. She died in her early 90s about 10 years later, of old age.

BG2015 · 21/09/2020 19:25

DrDavid is your DH out of hospital yet? Hope he's ok!

OP posts:
DrDavidBanner · 21/09/2020 21:41

Thanks for asking. Hes still in, the surgery went well but because it was partial it was a longer surgery and the pains started to kick in so he's still on morphine and quite groggy. I've spoken to him today and hes managed to get a lot of sleep so hopefully he'll feel stronger tomorrow.

DrDavidBanner · 22/09/2020 10:10

Good news and maybe bad news.

Good news. I spoke to him today and he sounds loads brighter, they managed to remove all of the tumor and will be know if it was cancerous in 3 weeks but said its unlikely he'll need further treatment👍
Bad news. Hes got a temperature so hes got to have another covid test😞 it does mean hes in a side ward on his own so hes much more comfortable.
Hopefully he'll be able to come out tomorrow! 🎉

BG2015 · 22/09/2020 19:37

Let's hope it's nothing major and he's home soon.

How's your DH doing now?

OP posts:
DocCappr · 01/10/2020 09:39

Hi all,
My DH was diagnosed with clear cell renal cell carcinoma almost 9 years ago - he was just 35 at the time.
He had a laparoscopic nephrectomy and took part in a clinical trial as his cancer was stage 3. He had 3 monthly scans for a year and then annual for the next 7 years. He was discharged in Jan of this year and is doing well.
Thinking of you all - cancer is a tough diagnosis to navigate.

BrigitsBigKnickers · 01/10/2020 16:15

My DH has a small clear cell carcinoma-partial nephrectomy surgery a year ago and just this minute got the call from his surgeon to say all clear in his one year scans. Phew!

BG2015 · 01/10/2020 16:49

Great recoveries ladies for your DH's!

We still can't believe it happened and so quick! If lockdown hadn't happened I doubt my DP would have had surgery so quick

OP how is your partner? Hope all is well for anyone living with a kidney cancer diagnosis.. just hearing the C word makes you feel as though your life is falling apart😔

BG2015 · 13/01/2024 22:40

He's absolutely fine. It's over three years now since his operation. He's had yearly CT scans but has coped fine with one kidney.
