Needing some advice purlease

Ds has tonsils out on Tuesday so on day 5 post op. He is still needing regular paracetamol & ibuprofen. He developed earache on day 2 and it is still waking him up in the night.

He was prescribed amoxocillin and is on day 3 of them. THis is because he was running temperature, very painful throat and stinky breath.

He still high temperature, was 37.8 but had paractemol and now temp is 37.5. He is hardly eating and drinking and cries as it hurts too much to swallow.

Managed to get him to have a weetabix soaked in milk and 2 small glasses of yoghurt drink today (he is refusing water). Have also managed to get him to have a small pot of jelly. All this resulted in him in tears. I called the ENT dept and spoke to dr about his ears and she said to see how he is tomorrow.

He now has a nosebleed (not through picking it at all), managed to stop bleeding.

He is at times quite bright but is definately not himself. Prior to op he had an amazing appetite and food has seriously never ever been a problem.

I know he will recover but just thought that by now he would be eating/drinking. I guess the infection is slowing his recovery but I feel quite helpless and at a loss as to how to help him.

hi i know this is totally different but my daughter had gromits put in and her adonoids out and they said to be aware of any bleeding... and to take her down

belgo · 30/09/2007 16:29

I'm not an ENT nurse, but I do know that antibiotics should show a significant improvement within 48 hours (so my GP told me).

MamaMaiasaura · 30/09/2007 16:29

adenoids arent too different (they were going to take out ds's but they werent too bad so left them, but they must have had a poke around there to see what they were like). When i spoke to the ENT dr she was very much of wait and see. All i feel like lately is that I have been harranging medical staff regarding ds and also cos of my preg. Feel really hyperchondrical iykwim and a bit of a idiot getting so worried.

belgo · 30/09/2007 16:31

of course you're not an idiot for getting worried - and you're not harranging medical staff either. If there is a problem, it's always best for it to get sorted out sooner then later.

You're just being a vigilent mother.

MamaMaiasaura · 30/09/2007 16:42

thanks, just feel like a pain in the bum

How was your dd recovery from adenoids?

OP posts:
chacha3 · 30/09/2007 18:29

hi she recovered fine within a couple of days! if you still not sure call in to see gp

MamaMaiasaura · 30/09/2007 20:53

i think i am going to have to call gp out tomorrow as despite him having paracetamol & nurefon his temp is still hoverong around 100f. he did however eat a little dinner, noodles

am going to see how the night goes.

OP posts:
chacha3 · 30/09/2007 21:52

well hope everything ends up ok and your little one starts to feel better soon...and if you are worried thro night specially bout temp take him to emergancy gp would have thought the antibiotics would have kicked in by now an start to take the temp down

belgo · 01/10/2007 08:19

how is he today Awen?

fakeblonde · 01/10/2007 10:00

He needs to eat tougher food like toast.Years ago they advised soup and ice cream ect. but now recommend the opposite. He needs to eat food that will exfoliate the slough and debris from around the wound site. This will speed the recovery time.Good luck at doctors.

MamaMaiasaura · 01/10/2007 14:01

Last night he managed a small bowl of noodles.. was very pleased.

Woke me twice, one at 12.30am and then again at 6am. Both times beside himself in tears. Needing painrelief and hotwater bottle.

I agree about him need tougher food but at the moment even having a drink is a drama. HE was in tears this morning over 3 chunks of melon and half a glass of milkshake.

Lunch has been 2 raspberrys, 2 halfs of strawberry and a third of a glass of milk.

Both of which has resulted in lots of tears (geniune) and both ears being very very painful. Called dr who adviced that he would prob need a home visit. Another dr called (one who prescribed anti-b's). She thinks that need to give the antibiotics more time (day 4 now ) When I said about his fluid and food intake she suggested he might need to be admitted hence ds tring to eat some lunch, which resulted in more tears.

Dr should be coming out to see him. When i spoke to her I hadnt checked his temp, have now and is 37.9c

I feel so helpless. I tried the hardline approach of if you dont drink the hospital will put a tube in you and feed you that way. Felt shitty saying it. He idd drink but was in a lot of pain and lots and lots of tears.

I feel like i am really letting him down and that he should be so much better already.

Dr been out. She mentioned possibilty of admission if he continues not to drink etc. She has prescribed him more paracetamol Said for me to call on Thursday if not improved will need more anti-biotics and re-assessment (poss admission). She was lovely actually, said I was doing all I could. Also said not to worry about food at all, just push fluids.

belgo · 01/10/2007 16:14

Awen - you're not letting him down - you're doing all you can - and if he does get re-admitted, I assure you, it will not be your fault. These things just happen - this is what doctors and nurses etc are there for.

MamaMaiasaura · 01/10/2007 21:16

thanks belgo. He has eaten pretty much nothing all day but has managed 4 drinks. He is complaining of feeling sick as well as earache and burning/painful throat. He bought up some white stuff from back of throat.

His temp was 101 (38.4) at 6.30 this even, has had paracetamol and temp now is 100 (38). Would have thought all the medication he is on would keep a lid on his temperature.

All he wants is lots of cuddles at the moment. Poor boy

heres hoping he improves then soon On day 6 post op. Dr wants me to call on Thursday if still poorly.

OP posts:
babalon · 01/10/2007 21:26

I think a trip to the drs tommorow would be a good idea. His temp shouldn't really be up at this stage and with paracetamol. Something isn't quite right is it?
Is he behaving like he's poorly or playing normally? Good news about the fluids though!
If he wants cuddles then thats the best thing you can do just try to keep him coolish.

MamaMaiasaura · 01/10/2007 21:32

babolon - dr did home visit today. She said that i need to let antibiotics work. Has had 4 days of them. I agree about his temperature as he is having paracetamol 10mg qds and ibuprofen 7.5mg tds. He is also not right spent whole day on sofa again. My ds is usually full of energy, wants hardly any telly, great appetite, constant chatter, very jokey... At the moment he is none of these. Is harder as well as on my own with him as dp is away in Japan. Drs needing to home visits as he isnt allowed out atm for risk of further infection. Neither of us getting much sleep and I am 27 weeks preg and knackered. He is in my bed again, boxers and bed sheet on.

babalon · 01/10/2007 21:46

Arhhh bless you
I'd just want a real answer to what was going on if it was one of mine. If you are worried you should keep pestering the doctors. It could just mean he needs a different type of antibiotics, maybe they could get a swab from his throat just to be safe
Sorry your'e both having a bad time these things always happen to me when DH is away too! Hope you get a better nights sleep tonight

belgo · 02/10/2007 07:55

If his temperature is still high today, I think you should speak to the doctors again. He may need stronger antibiotics.

PellMell · 02/10/2007 08:01

Phone the hospital.
Ask to speak to consultants secretary and say you want an urgent review with the consultant!
I hope he's better soon.

MamaMaiasaura · 02/10/2007 11:25

Got woken at midnight (really really distressed) and 3am this morning. 3am I couldnt give him anything as he already had medicine at midnight. He then didnt need anything till 9am That means he went 9 hours!! Temperature was 38c at 9am. He also had a whole glass of frijji (sp) milkshake - he had it using a syringe as he says it is easier for him. Whatever works i guess. He is still complaining of earache and says his ears are worse than his throat.

Snuggled up next to me atm watching dr who episodes.

Am hoping that he is on upwards slope. Fingers crossed.

Belgo & Pellmell - thanks for advice xx Where he saw dr yesterday she advised see how he goes and if still poorly on Thursday she will review - prob would need further antibiotics and consider admission (although as he actually had a drink without sobbing etc this morning and hopeful that this wont be neccesary). xx
